I also do this in Hawaii. I always wondered why JAL hooks up the onboard GPU for their towbarless tows. My best guess is that they need to run the beacon and dont want to use up the battery. Much respect to the Japan ramp teams.
They have on-board power unit so there is no reason to conserve battery, my guess is to preserve fuel during pushbacks. But again pushback only took a couple minutes so why don’t they hook up from the start? The beginning when they arrived at terminal.
It directly leads to the avionics bay. Above that is a access door to the cockpit. I do towbarless tows and had to think why JAL does it that way with the GPU hooked up. My best guess is that they need to turn on the beacon and dont want to drain the battery.

現役グラハンスタッフです。
通常の乗降用ドアを使用出来ない場合は映像にあるようなアクセスドアを使用して、必要な電気系統のスイッチを操作したり、パーキングブレーキのセットやリリースを行ったりします。
一番最初にバニラエアが映ってる🥰
これを撮影した頃は、まだバニラエアは健在でした。
