Storage on the Mac Pro is kinda interesting. Dave's Garage has just done a video where he's put three PCIe SSDs into a Mac Pro in RAID0 for high speed, but cheaper than Apple, storage.
The concerning part about the price of the mac storage is that as far as I can tell, it's nowhere near as fast as those fabric rocket cores that they put in the competing PC, but it costs twice as much for no reason
There's two comparisons to really make, here. You did one, which is "for a similar price, what can we get". I'd also like to have seen "if we try to target the same performance, what is the price". How much cheaper /is/ a pc that performs comparably to their boat anchor?
I meant probably less than half. For example for 4k instead of a macbook pro m3 max with 64-96gb ram and 2-4-8tb for the same amount of money you could buy an Ipad pro 12.9, an Iphone 15 Pro Max and 2 notebooks (ryzen 7 for hackintosh or as they call it ryzentosh) with 64gb ram 4tb nvme EACH. And with similar performance to M1 as far as cpu. That would be faster and more productive (4 computing devices) than 1 single macbook pro m3 max with high specs... Iphone pro max in case one uses it for photo and videos. Othewise you could buy a second Ipad Pro instead... OR for 4k total you could buy a I9-14900hx laptop with 96gb ram and 8tb nvmes (2x of 4tb gen4) with 4070 for windows, and 2 ryzen slower ones for ryzentosh with 64tb 4rb nvme each. 3 powerful (1 as fast as the m3...) laptops. 1 with Windows and 2 with Mac Os. Productivity compared to a single Macbook pro m3 max would destroy it... not even close..

It's absolutely not good value if you spec it realistically Upgrading it to 32gb and 1tb of storage is SO EXPENSIVE that you can LITERALLY BUY 2 MAC MINIS for the price of the 1 upgraded 1
If you've used magnes you would know that and point 2 When people figure out that naturally calcium (but it's really reactive so you rarely see it in it's clear form) is a metal they will lose their minds. In Polish there's no option to make a mistake as silicon is called "silicons" but Silica is called "Krzem" as the name comes from latin word "silex" which in Polish is "krzemień" (Flint in eng, found in sedimentary rocks as a silicon dioxide (SiO2) - which was already adopted so they shorted it from krzemień to krzem. Not the best learning experience but we somehow got there, and I really believe I'm on C1/C2 reading/hearing level but writing/speaking at maybe B1/B2? When there were shortages of silica I was really flabbergasted that polymer that we make chemically can run out without chemical shortages (No I didn't know yet that even silicon is made out of silica and other chemicals, as I said for me it was the same stuff) a) How do we have that of a shortage of human-made through chemistry made material b) How tf it is that good at making CPUs and GPUs that good? // IT ALL REMINDED ME OF FUN STORY, I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES AND EARS It reminded me of 23-30 yo tik-tok boy saying: "OMG GUYS I'M SO STUPID, TO THIS DAY THAT IRON IN CEREAL IS NORMAL IRON "FILINGS" " (i mean not kinds metal shavings from nearest construction site/production hall, and tinkering guy's garage. I think something that is very important to note is that Apple M chips do not have AVX-512, and actually don't have AVX at all. This makes a huge difference in code that can be vectorized which significantly reduces computation time. So while the M chips seem to perform a certain way in benchmarks like cinebench and geekbench, in actual AVX workloads they will be significantly slower than a CPU that supports AVX, AVX2, or even better AVX-512 like Zen4 supports.
this is fine. no one that buys an apple actually has a work load. they buy them so they can sit in star bucks using social media and feeling smug while sniffing their own farts. the chip only needs to support one instruction set, and that is to show the apple logo on the screen, not just the back of the screen.
@@iris4547Nope, we buy them to have nice machine to connect with our compute clusters. If you have a real load then you do not have a box under your desk, you have racks of servers somewhere where you do not have to see and hear them.
@@nujuat No they aren't. Avx-512 is only getting bigger. All AMD zen4 CPUs now have avx-512 support. Edit: and regular consumer Intel CPUs do as well, the problem is that the e cores are from an older architecture that doesn't, so only the p cores support it.
I would love to see a built like this that uses an Ampere ARM CPU. That way you could take the fight right to the M-series in a more "native" apples to arms comparison.
I know this is said as a joke, but that's just pre-shave Linus. I swear they need to just put the calendar date clearly in every shot or people won't know how long these videos take to make...

Seriously, how can you have so much technical knowledge and STILL be completely oblivious to how much Apple is fisting the video industry. Between them and Adobe I think videographers deserve everything they get.
The new Mac Pro is indeed an overpriced disappointment. The price-performance ratio is just not justified, especially when compared to a custom-built PC.
I would like to see a PC already built for the same price as the MAC pro. Yea you can cherry pick your components and build something better. But let’s test off the shelf.
@MrTruffles20 Here's a few: ThinkSystem SR665 at $4,159.74 ThinkSystem SR860 at $5,882.37 PowerEdge R760xa starting at $29,658.98 PowerEdge T550 starting at $5,189.00 AS-4125GS-TNRT with pricing at request, but you can safely assume it will be 10K plus At the price point of the Mac Pro, you are comparing against enterprise products with enterprise support
I switched to PC 20 years ago when apple Promac was heaping price of 5K and stopped giving a keyboard and mouse. They charged extra for that. Not disappointed in switching.
How can human being with functional brain can even considerate going apple , there is nothing that makes it superior to competitors , oh it just works , you know what else just works pen and paper , eye hand coordination etc apple is joke
I decided to never buy anything from Apple when I heard they were charging people for iPod firmware updates back in around 2010. It told me pretty much everything I needed to know about the company.
@@JoeBob79569 Wait till you hear what Microsoft is charging OEM's and customers in form of Windows licenses today. Even after paying the license fees MS is displaying ads of random bloatware programs on the Start menu. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think every release of macOS has been free since 2013 and seems to be ad free.
Honestly, the problem with Apple Silicon is that the performance doesn't really scale to the high end. Power efficiency is nice and all, but you need that performance, especially when you're spending something like $12 Grand on a computer.
When making a Mac Pro Killer etc. it would make sense to find a case that would mimic the looks of the Mac as well. If we truly want to assert the dominance of PC, we need to show Mac users that PC can look good too. Hereunder use a smaller form factor case than this one

16:40 older PCs used to have a speaker in them, but they were only for bios post ...I think.....dont remember, many years and many bottles of alcohol have passed
It seems like most business PC's will have a functional speaker inside. My Dell Optiplex's do. Pretty sure HPs do too. Not sure about Lenovos. Kinda nice for windows sounds. Pretty useless for any media. But at least it's something. And by functional speaker, I mean a little 1.5" full range driver. Not just a piezo transducer on the motherboard.
I recall workstations do a lot more checks on bootup to make sure the machine is working properly. They also tend to take a slight performance hit for using more reliable memory.
Things like ECC memory are irrelevant for workstations, I haven't had my PC blue screen due to a bit flip in like a decade, and even if it did my work is saved automatically every 5 minutes anyway. It's practically just a marketing gimmick. ECC is only useful in datacenters.
@@oBCHANo bit flips don’t just cause blue screens they can degrade data quality. Autosaving is not going to detect or prevent bit flips, if the memory has bad data then bad data gets saved. But there’s some fair point that bit flips have been pretty rare. I recall the next RAM standard will make them standard because of how close to the limits RAM is getting.
@Linus can we look at some ML benchmark results - such as training a Pytorch CNN? This might be a little non-standard, but a lot of use cases these days involve this type of workloads.
ML results would indeed be really interesting. And if your model needs 100 or 150 GB of video memory, the mac pro is suddenly really cheap compared to something similar with nvidia cards
The performance on training a CNN varies significantly depending on many details (how much needs to be stored in memory at any given point, and whether stuff need to be heavily batched as a result- in which case memory bandwidth dominates the results. Also, I don't know what the CUDA/CUDnn equivalents for the Mac, but small differences in choices for optimizers/activation functions/etc for the network can make a huge difference depending on the version of CUDA+torch that you use. It's really hard to get meaningful comparisons unless you know exactly what you want to train. Maybe some inference benchmarks?
@@sophiophile I don't know what they have and don't have in their ML tools, but it seems that they invest a lot into it because both TensorFlow and PyTorch supports more functions with Metal than AMD's ROCm, and the first Metal support was here less than a year after the beginning of Apple Silicon.
@@bastienx8 I agree, but there are lots of other things that can slow down a pipeline. I would be interested to see the performance of pandas on Mac's shared memory vs CuDF.
Honestly it's too much, he's clearly coached to just pretend laugh at anything Linus says. I miss Taran and Emily (Anthony), they didn't just suck up to him the whole time.
honestly, if energy consumption and temps are a problem, considering the 1.5 performence uplift in CPU you could underclock and undervolt the CPU to like 2.5Ghz and still have the same performances as the mac pro for probably even more energy efficiency. And just imagine the GPU, being 7 times better in the benchmarks means that you could divide the 4090s' frequency by 7 to get 300 Mhz GPU that still perform just as good as a mac pro for way less energy consumption. Add to that the (almost) energy-free doubling of ram and storage (and probably other I/o). And then consider the compatibility issues of any apple product and that "strong" argument is void
The power consumption isn't proportional to the frequency. When you look at the power consumption of CPUs or GPUs it isn't 5x lower when they are idle, even if the main frequency is 10x lower. The M2 ultra average around 200W when the cpu and gpu are under load, which is probably not far from the idle power consumption of their "pc pro"...
@@bastienx8 yeah power consumption is exponential compared to frequency, so lowering these frequencies might do a more than linear decrease, and if not just turn off 33% of cpu cores and somehow do the same with the GPU's cuda cores
@@thomquiri9860 From what I've seen the power consumption is more or less exponential when you increase the frequency above the base frequency, but when you decrease the frequency and/or voltage the power consumption doesn't decrease a lot because everything around the cores still consumes as much. That's also why lower versions of a cpu of the same gen only consumes a little less even if the performance is 3 or 4x lower.
The extra memory channels in the TR Pro would aid memory bound tasks closer to Apple’s unified memory. Also, there are new PC standards that support DMA for nearly all system components via CXL. Apple knows they can’t compete in workstation or HPC, which makes this more of an art product than production compute system.
To most of the people I know that use apple over everything else it has _nothing_ to do with performance. For them, Apple is better simple because it's apple. They are openly and willingly buying a name for the sake of the name. Apple could come out and say: 'This is worse and costs double everything else' and many of them would happily still buy it........

But Hackintosh is not yet dead
Linus singing Hey Ya was actually pretty good
Was looking for this and if not i was gonna make that comment😂. He really did that good didnt he😅❤

oh thank god a double 4090 is playing a old game well :D
It came out in 2018
I love how recently you've been putting out more chill less tryhard videos. Like this one. Great watch.
you do realize there was two 4090's in there right?

He is in denial about being in high school choir.
Exactly my thoughts! We need a single from Linus!
12:44 I feel you. I want it back also.
There's two comparisons to really make, here. You did one, which is "for a similar price, what can we get". I'd also like to have seen "if we try to target the same performance, what is the price". How much cheaper /is/ a pc that performs comparably to their boat anchor?
Half at most.
Probably hard to do as its really usecase depending
Other one is upgrade ability, you can just replace CPU or GPU, In apple products you are stuck with it.
Honestly seeing Elijah is really cool for viewers because a lot of us simply aren't as knowledgeable in this stuff, and are perhaps novices/beginners. Seeing Elijah feels like we're watching ourselves interact with Linus/ other LTT tech crew

@666Tomato666 they switch to Intel because powerpc processor isn't powerful like the apple ads made you think that is.
I remember... my hackintosh with mere core 2 duo e4300 put in the dust expensive dual g5 in 2007. How much is funny... because with a very cheap pc... running Mac os 10.4.8 (tiger) put a shame on expensive Mac pro g5 in that time.

Linus managing to drop that 4090 without even touching it directly. Takes some skill
Great video! As an alternate view-point, I'd love to see what would be the cost of an equivalent performance PC.
Indeed, I'd like to know what CPU and GPU combo would be equivalent in terms of performance. I'd be more curious about that than the prices, in fact.
"But what about Final cut and ECOSYSTEM" - what a burn.
Are we just going to ignore Linus perfectly belting out that "Hey Yeah"?! lol

But that's the reason I also thought silicon==silica while reading and hearing English sources (I started learning English from yt and later, news, politics, yt comments since 2019 etc.). Not the best learning experience but we somehow got there, and I really believe I'm on C1/C2 reading/hearing level but writing/speaking at maybe B1/B2?
When there were shortages of silica I was really flabbergasted that polymer that we make chemically can run out without chemical shortages (No I didn't know yet that even silicon is made out of silica and other chemicals, as I said for me it was the same stuff)
a) How do we have that of a shortage of human-made through chemistry made material
b) How tf it is that good at making CPUs and GPUs that good?
// IT ALL REMINDED ME OF FUN STORY, I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES AND EARS

They are just lil' guys who are afraid to die, tell them that even the smallest of the small are welcome in the kingdom of the god or w/e your imaginary friend is! I was anemic (luckily not anything serious) but quality of life went up A LOT.
Afair only Intel had avx512 anyway, and they're phasing it out too?
@@nujuat No they aren't. Avx-512 is only getting bigger. All AMD zen4 CPUs now have avx-512 support.
Edit: and regular consumer Intel CPUs do as well, the problem is that the e cores are from an older architecture that doesn't, so only the p cores support it.

The generational divide was very evident in this video, and it was hilarious. Great chemistry between these two characters. Awesome video!
I would love to see a built like this that uses an Ampere ARM CPU. That way you could take the fight right to the M-series in a more "native" apples to arms comparison.
Nothing would run on it though. I don't think these applications they ran as benchmarks are available for it.

Maybe one day video editors will actually learn something about tech instead of settling for Mac.
Yeah exactly as this video just showed

when you lend linus your graphics card its a 50/50 chance your getting it back in original shape
What ended up being the 0d fix? We've run into that a number of times on our threadripper build
Yeah, lame that they didn't elaborate.

7:47 THIS is the only reason the M2 Mac Pro exists. To justify less insane pricing.
honestly, if energy consumption and temps are a problem, considering the 1.5 performence uplift in CPU you could underclock and undervolt the CPU to like 2.5Ghz and still have the same performances as the mac pro for probably even more energy efficiency.
Thanks for reppin the OG PC builders all the way to 2024, Linus! Been a fan since 2013, hoping there's many many more years to come!
