my bio mom would beat the piss out of my little sister who has behavioral issues and PTSD now because of it. i always had to be the one to explain to her and console her secretly that she’s not bad, she’s just a kid but she can’t do certain stuff because she won’t get anything for christmas or the tooth fairy won’t give her money when she loses a tooth. it’s very easy to not hit a kid, if you’re too “old school” and think hitting or beating your kid works, you’re wrong. it only teaches them to fear you. if you hit your kid, you’re only striking fear in them and they’ll do the same thing and try not to get caught doing it. if you explain to your kid, results are better look at the stats.
This is how I am now...I'm autistic and I did certain bad behaviors or behavior that both my parents deemed inappropriate and they'd beat me with whatever they had in their hands as well as my siblings. My siblings were able to either act like they weren't traumatized or they got some form of anger issues.
I was genuinely traumatized and I took tests to see if I may or may not have PTSD and sure enough I may have to get an official diagnosis of it if I can...
Beating a child has been proven to be the absolute worst parenting method (maybe except for total neglect) over and over again. My parents just grounded my brother and me, took away some privileges (no TV, no computer time and such) or gave us extra chores (age-appropriate stuff from helping more with cleaning to mowing the yard) and explained every step and why to an exhausting detail. Sure, I've got some issues as an adult, but none are caused by my parents, and my brother is doing as well and stable as an adult can. We both have great relationships with both of them, talk at least once a week and visit each other often.
The only thing our mom did was smacking our little, stupid toddler hands away from dangerous stuff if a 'stop, don't touch that!' wouldn't have been (fast) enough, like my brother playing with an outlet or me wanting to know how hot a stove is after cooking.
And yes, they were strict. But we knew the rules and the consequences if we don't follow them. KNOWING, not FEARING.

All you have to literally to correct a child is get down on their level and calmly tell them this behavior is absolutely not tolerated and explain why, then maybe a short time out sitting or standing. Like for instance when my ex's kids acted up I'd make them sit in the kitchen while the cartoons played in the living room by the time their time out was over they'd tearfully apologize and go watch their cartoons after a hug.
