  • Independent TD Mick Wallace has questioned whether it was appropriate for the former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan to have spent time at Garda Headquarters in Dublin recently.
Wallace was speaking under privilege in the Dáil today, as calls continue for current Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan to step down over the breath test scandal.
“Does the Minister think it is appropriate for former Commissioner Callinan to have been in Phoenix Park headquarters on several days last week?” he asked Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, who was taking questions in the chamber this afternoon.
“Does he think it is appropriate that the former Commissioner and the present Commissioner would have access to the whole apparatus of An Garda Síochána, a pleasure that will not be afforded to [whistleblowers] Sergeant Maurice McCabe and Superintendent David Taylor?” Wallace continued.
Included in the terms of reference of the Charleton Tribunal into the Maurice McCabe scandal is an examination of telephone and text message contact between former press office head Superintendent David Taylor, Callinan and O’Sullivan jrnl.ie/3313292

crooked assed cops propped up by corrupt government. all the social institutions in Ireland are corrupted while the citizens sir on their hands doing nothing. Sir Robert Peel knew of the dangers of a centralized national police force, which is why he kept law enforcement agencies in the UK fragmented to cut down on corrupt practices such a we see unfolding in Ireland. The garda force needs to be disbanded and each town, village, city have its own police department,; country should have its own country sheriff, county police and its own jail where inmates work for their keep.

Fully agree John, the whole thing is a farce. Corrupt to the core. Yet the government remain in power. Backed up by FF. Even when you present them with the evidence. They carry on with the fudging.

Is the Garda Commissioner satisfied that service tazers and badges issued to plain clothes members of the force (ie Gardaí gán culaith or Gardaí Anonymous (GA)) are not at risk of beign transferred to non-members of the force, particularly during periods of minimum supervision such as weekends and bank holidays.
