3:48 is the real #QOTD and I used to do things that didn't have any value because society said so, right up until about 15 when I stopped being an A+ student and started making money from the internet, that was 16 years ago when AOL was the game and Web Design was still a new concept.
I got started early. I decided that the whole point of school was to position you to be successful and that grades were arbitrary. They take off points for attendance, I can out perform everyone with less help from a teacher and be graded down because you want more of my time and attention... I decided school was not actually preparing me for the real world, but to waste time with arbitrage.
So I gave it less attention and focused on learning skills I felt would help me be successful in a world I realized would be dominated by technology and design.
I blew off homework and projects and took C's even though I was an honors student and getting A's on test and getting AP level placement scores... why?
To focus on learning, Design, Coding, Photography, Video Production, Video Editing, User Experience, Biz Dev, Audio Production, How to Build and Repair Computers and Creative Writing... you know the skills that every single major brand is built on... the things that all of our favorite most important apps facilitate or deliver on... you know, those thing we consume more of than everything else...
Now I get to work for myself, built a community of over 40,000 creatives subscribed to and consuming me on UA-cam, write for industry publications, film conferences and I've recently started speaking at conferences and now have deals in place for E-courses with 3 of the major online education sites and a few of the smaller ones.
The level of arbitrage in our society, the value people give to OPTICS and leave on the table doing crap that doesn't give them value is INSANE. And I'm so glad that ***** keeps bringing this up.
I took so much crap for some many years for some of my choices, but very few people except some people that I know that are older family are friends, can dispute the results of those choices. Those who do are still being romantic and living in the past.

Gary - finished the last of the 117 episodes today in just under 2 weeks. I turn 40 tomorrow and I am restarting my side business you inspired me to start a few years ago (Legacy State University - "legacy is greater than currency."). Hustling from 11pm - 2am every night now, thanks for reigniting that in me.
Just wanted to post so I'm not a lurker, but know that I'm here in the background, optimizing my most valuable asset to build something I can be proud of. THANK YOU.

I love the concept of 'stats' and what people think one deserves, I get the statement a lot on our show, "you deserve more subscribers!!"
What does it mean to 'deserve' them? I have good quality content...? I know this. What matters to me are QUALITY subscribers, not QUANTITY. I can sell 13k worth of cocktail gear in a month with 63k subscribers--sure, I could probably sell more with 80k subscribers but not if they're all purchased fake users...then I just have a big number but nobody is home. Why own a city with no people in it? I want the people, not the zombies.
I've seen great successful businesses both online and offline with 300+ facebook followers. Why don't they have more? Maybe they're being too successful to go harass people to 'fan' them..I dunno.

I hear you. I've just found that for me I almost don't consider a lot of what I'm doing "work" sometimes. I love photography, and art and design and video, and when I shut everything else and immerse myself in creating I feel like its my meditation.... unless there's a looming deadline, in which case it becomes work LOL.

      Chad Solberg
It's not that it is impossible, it's just unlikely for many. If you're not doing things halfway then you're putting passion, energy time and money into it. Some people can get a what they feel is a great ROI on certain experiences, I decided what experiences created the most ROI for me and which ones didn't and at the end I cut a lot of things in favor of mostly creative pursuits.
      Creating over Consuming.

I would give you 5 stars because you are straightforward and honest with your truth. You're not selling yourself, you're saying this is what I see, this is how I got here and these are ways you could apply it to you. I would love to hear a little expansion into some of the more "creative" job areana's (photographers, makers, that sort). I've been thinking a lot about the QOTD. My initial reaction was that I didn't want to admit that I love certain video games. I guess ashamed.
This past week was the first phase of my programming internship and there was a lot of talk about gaming.
I realize now that what everyone loved so much was the ability to bond with others and share their gaming experiences. To go on virtual adventures with each other.
Bonding is so primal and necessary for us all.
I still say that I'd rather allocate my time to developing my career but I've made peace with why I love games so much.

I am a guy that likes Mountain biking (former store owner), I like cars and watches, like to talk to people. I am trapped in my family business (clinical laboratory) trying to take it to a next level. We hire a study to see if can sell it and the study shows that is not the time to sell but if we get our sales up a 10% in the next year we can triple our value to sell or continue to grow the business to leave a legacy to my sons and my family. My mom is the center of the business and it has been difficult for her to delegate and the business has been for years in a almost cero growth due to high rotation of personnel among other things. How I can take it to the next level using what I think is the future of business promotion marketing and sales....the social media. I like to get results with minimun effort in order to allocate strenght in areas that really needs it!!! Help Gary! Appreciate it...

Peter Drucker's book called "Managing Oneself" talks about this fact. You are either a reader or a listener and rarely people are both.

QOTD answer: My youngest (tween) wants me to play more video games with him, he knows I'm still getting the hang of a the buttons and stuff on our XBox360 so we play The Lego Movie game and he's killin' it, and he gets a kick out of being better at something than me. My 17 yr old would love it if I played GTA5 with him, but I still suck at the controls too much to do much in that game, got hit by a train last time and got wedged under a bridge or something. It's worth some time so I have these experiences with my boys and a shared vocabulary.

I am playing ZERO video games I stopped a few years back to focus on my "real life" that's the best way I can say it.

KILLED IT with the House of Jerky question!! I actually felt like I'm learning something when I rolled my eyes hearing the question.
#QOTD: Last video game I played was Pokemon Ruby version on my Android emulator.

QOTD: Currently ish....Max Payne 3 (played it months ago around my Birthday). Running my channel and growing my business have taken all of my typical gaming time. I'll plan a staycation soon enough so I rest up and game a little bit.
    Great show today!

Man, I kinda loved/hated this episode.
I can't tell if the QOTD was meant to be ironic in an episode talking about focus. :)
Gary I think you maybe need to mix some practitioner stuff in with the religion. It was quite possible that Mr Jerky was not complaining about success but instead looking for practical advice on how to have which followers are worth video response and how to judge on that. Or whether it's ok to get to everybody eventually, or what.
I think it's fine to go into the anti-success-complaining rant but not without another more useful interpretation.
Similar with the Facebook status question. I felt it was quite obvious the asker knew that numbers didn't matter but really just talking about someone ELSE's numbers (someone who is not Gary Vaynerchuk) and on tactics to deal with the question and inform someone who thought the numbers did matter!
(and then you admittedly headed back in the dirt asking to raise podcast numbers)
Loved the passion and humor and bit with stunwin, but man, this was a bit of a self indulgent ep in my view. All good though still appreciate it much.
(I'm viewing steadily from ep 101 but working my way backwards too... Seen or listened between 45 or so and 117 so far)
    Bumblelion rules.

That was one of your best shows yet Gary. I couldn't agree more with complaining in this world today. I mean how could anyone living in North America have anything to complain about? They have the ability to go out everyday and make something happen. That is how the school system (powers that be) by design say go to school and get a good job (I could go on and on here). I hope more people become empowered to go out and make positive stuff happen. Thanks!

Dear Gary, My name is Matthew Adams (Formerly "House Of Jerky"). It really breaks my heart that you missed it...again. I was asking for HELP!! I was NOT complaining...I needed a recommendation on HOW to handle all of the traffic. It was sudden and unexpected. I never had traffic like that and was caught off guard. I did not know HOW to handle all of the requests.
Again...I was asking for help on HOW to handle the traffic (NOTE: I was beyond grateful for all of the traffic.)
But...on a side note, I am no-longer associated with the company because of your words. Corporate was PISSED...at ME for getting the company involved with this. (But that is water under the bridge) You kinda did me a favor.
I apologize for not stating my needs correctly...but I just wish you would have allowed me to explain (like you promised in a message) what I was asking. I am NOT angry at you anymore...just disappointed that you did not keep your word with me so that there was no misunderstanding.
    Love ya bro...
    Matthew Adams (Facebook @IAmMatthewAdams )
