    The problem why I struggle with algebra is because I'm just blindly following steps. I don't know why I do what I do in algebra because I just follow a method. That's what makes learning algebra hard and forgettable for me.

      I know this comment is two years old but I have been there and I want to advise anyone else who is struggling that sheer repetition was key for me to 'get' this. I must have watched about twenty videos several times on the subject. I had to blindly follow the steps at first and then with repeated practice it began to sink in and I started to spot patterns and develop an intuition about what to do. Now I can do them and the example in the video was no problem for me. Good luck.

      Hi - this is a technique called 'cross multiplication.' Imagine that you have:
      x / y = 3 / 4
      By cross multiplying this is exactly the same as 4x = 3y.
      With the question you've got 1/1 on the right hand side so you can cross multiply to:
      1 x (xsquared + 9x - 12) = 1 x (2x - 3)(x + 1)
      Hope that's OK and all best S

    Hi Simon, can you help? I was able to follow everything except that you got rid of one pair of the brackets (one each of the two terms) in the denominator when you made it into one fraction? Why did they become only (2x-3) (x+1) instead of the two pairs of these? And how come they aren't multiplied out in the denominator? Thank you

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  3 роки тому +2

      Hi - the idea of making both individual fractions to have the same denominator, is so that I can combine them into one fraction. It’s the same as adding say:
      1/3 + 1/4
      The common denominator is 12, so I can rewrite as
      4/12 + 3/12
      Which then combines to 7/12.
      Hope that’s OK and all best S

    wait when you moved the +9x over to the -x, wouldn't moving +9x make it a -9x? then because your subtracting it wouldn't it be -x subtract -9x becoming -x + 9x?

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  3 роки тому +2

      Hi - Great question and appreciate the comment. It's not -x - -9x , which would be -x + 9x as you mentioned. Instead, (forget the other terms):
      +9x = -x
      So, I need to get the +9x on the right hand side .... this is done by -9x to both sides of the equals sign, and 'balances' the equation around the equals sign (think of it like a playground seesaw)
      -9x + 9x = -x - 9x
      On the left side I get 0 (nothing), on the right side I get -10x
      0 = -10x
      Hope that helps and all best S

    How about this, -2x + 1 = 0 , what is the value of x?

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  2 роки тому +1

      Hi - the main problem is -2x, so add 2x to both sides
      +1 = 2x
      Then divide by 2
      1/2 = x
      So x is 1/2.
      Hope that helps and all best S :-)

      @@3minutemaths Thank you very much for the reply sir. I now fully understand the problem. I thought the X will remain negative, that makes me confuse at first.

    There is a need to verify that the solutions are "good". That they do not zero 2x-3 or x+1

    4:50 im confused, Why is he changing the signs when combining terms??

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  5 років тому +3

      Joshua C
      Hi - I’m not changing the terms .... I’m just putting everything on the right hand side so I can make the equation equal to zero. 5.46 the 2x and -3x (on the right) becomes -x.
      Then I bring over the 9x on the left hand, this is now a negative as I’m subtracting 9x from both sides. So -x -9x = -10x
      Same with the -12 on the left side. It becomes +12 when taken to the right.
      Hope that’s not too confusing... it’s quite a difficult problem.

    how shoul we do this sum
    1/3(x-1)-1/4(x-2)=1

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  6 років тому +2

      Selva Nayagam - Hi - (This is a little difficult to show on a text comment)
      Your question is the same as writing (x-1)/3 - (x-2)/4 = 1
      Make both denominators the same
      4(x-1)/12 - [3(x-2)/12] = 1
      I’ve used the square brackets as the centre minus sign can cause a problem
      Multiply out (4x-4)/12 - [(3x-6)/12] = 1
      Lose the brackets (4x -4 - 3x + 6)/12 = 1
      Tidy up (x+2)/12 = 1
      Multiply through by 12 (x+2)= 12
      Minus 2 both sides
      X = 10
      Hope this helps and all best S
