I know this is from a decade ago but I’m so happy that she gave Katniss an accent, I wish the movies did the same. This character was my only positive representation of Appalachia as a kid, and it hurt to see the movies neglect that.
I love her. Why can’t she narrates all the audiobooks? Perfect reading. I got a bit teary there towards the end. And most importantly this makes me want Mockingjay NOW.
I love her accent c: it's so cool. You are my hero!!! Seriously! So many times when a movie for the book comes out people worship the actors when the author should definitely be equally looked up to! You're amazing!
Yes Katniss is from "Appalachia" thus S. C. Gives her an accent. Living now in Southern WV, I can personally attest that the accent she uses is quite mild compared to how many speak in this area. Or rather "how some folks talk 'round here". :-)
District 12 mines coal. Coal mining is big in Kentucky which is located in the Appalachia as the book says. That's where I'm from and that's how we speak. Don't make fun guys! :)
The fact that you (and apparently 51 other people) have that reaction to a Southern accent is the reason it's good to have an intelligent main character with that very accent.
Suzanne Collins, I dream one day to write like you. The create plots that captivate the reader such as yours do. To make my characters seem so real, like best friends. Thanks so much for the wonderful trilogy. Your books literally changed my life, and I am so proud to be part of The Hunger Games fan base.
Remember the regions - Katniss is from what used to be called Appalachia which includes West Virginia, parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. They're coal miners. A Southern accent isn't a surprise :)
If you look at coal deposit maps of the U.S you will see there's not a lot coal in Virginia. The coal reserves you will find are on a narrow band that sits near the WV border and some near SE Kentucky. Additionally you have other issues with Virginia not fitting the description of district 12 because the little bit of coal Virginia does have is more southern and district 12 is said to get a lot of snow which would fit the more northern & bigger coal deposits of WV. Virginia doesn't really fit.
@ashesashesashesagain I agree. I read the Seam characters with an accent, although not the one Collins is using here. Accents, as well as other cultural markers, are important in the book. Katniss remarks in the first book how bizarre the Capital accent is. She ane Peeta talk about the District 12 wedding customs. They have a Hoedown with a fiddle at Finnick and Annie's wedding. The accent is just a larger part of the cultural distinction.
It's kind of hilarious how many people are complaining that Katniss doesn't have this accent, or that she should have "no accent" or a "normal" accent. News flash: there's no such thing as a "normal" accent in English, or "no" accent. People generally perceive either their own accent or the accent they hear most on TV or other media as "no accent" but we all have accents, everyone from the Queen of England to he most Southern sounding person you can imagine. I have an accent. You have an accent. None of them are "normal" or better than another. Of course, there's also the point that Katniss is Suzanne Collins' character and she can give her whatever the hell accent she likes, which is also apparently lost on some people.
I don't have an argument with anything you just said, but it doesn't seem to be a lot to do with my post - I was laughing at the people who claimed to know better than Suzanne Collins what accent the character she wrote would have, or that there's anyone anywhere who 'doesn't have an accent'.
Katniss having a southern accent isn't that surprising. Even in the movie her mother has one and Haymitch slightly too. I actually felt really satisfied with Mockingjay's ending. I loved the two characters that died, but this is war. It was going to happen. I felt so discontent with the end up until the scene with the cat, and everything after that just seemed to fix it all. Life can find a way to go on.
She is. Think where District 12 is. It's in the heart of coal mining. West Virginia, Virigina, etc. I never thought of her with a southern ACCENT, but she's from that area.
and also, Jennifer and Josh are from KY and proud of it in interviews ive seen. this is Mrs. Collins version of what she (a yankee from CT) still thnks a Southerner sounds like. Its like seeing movies where someone from the South says,"y'all" to just one person, instead of 2 or more. hollywood...
Most of Virginia isn't in Appalachia and the part that is does't have hardly any coal deposits. You are right though about West Virginia. District 12 by all the descriptions is all but certainly West Virginia as no other state fits all the criteria.
@midnightarmonia You mean and intelligent, badass girl who is also Appalachian. Collins herself has said that District 12 is in the mountains of West Virginia, hence the coal mines. To me, this is even nobler than making her Southern, as Appalachia is probably the most stereotyped region in the U.S. for its "hillbillies." I should know, I live there. So to all you complainers: learn that accents have nothing to do with how smart or cool a person is. Katniss is now even more awesome in my eye.
But the whole point of Mockingjay is that Katniss breaks, and she isnt strong and confident- she is weak, like we all are. It just proves that she is human.
The best writer on earth, i just love her so much, she changed my way of writting forever with just a young adult novel when stephen kings books make me feel nothing
For all of you bitching about the southern accents. District 12 is in the southern Appalachians, they would have an accent. And anyways they're her characters she's allowed to do what she wants with them.
public service announcement: the appalachian region includes the bordering states of NY, OH, TN, KY, MS, WV, VA, MD, NC, SC, GA, and AL. district 12 could be any of those states.
I can't Believe!!!!! This is Real. Mockingjay is here. The way Suzanne has read the first chapter has made me cry. Poor Katniss. But she is very strong, and Peeta must be alive!!! Kisses from an Spanish fan.
@ihearthatalot Same here I love this series it's so amazing!!! I wish It would go on too, but all good things must come to an end. This book is by far the best book in the series.
When I finished it I felt a strange emptiness in side. Maybe it was because Gale was basically completely written off or it left things somewhat unanswered about Peta and the Hunger Games that were suggested. By all means, I'm pleased with the trilogy but I just feel it left things a touch unanswered. I never liked it for Katniss' relationships but it left me feeling like there was something more that needed to be added.
Holy shit. Kudos to Collins, defeating stereotypes. An intelligent, badass girl WHO IS ALSO SOUTHERN. Seriously, people, don't be classist. :C Fortunately Suzanne Collins is really really involved with the movie so the accent should hopefully be there. :D
@seddieluvr1098 Technically she is. District 12 is where Appalachia currently is. Appalachian culture is generally associated with the West Virgina/Kentucky area, and is know for having a southern accent. There are less twangy versions than the one Suzanne is choosing to use, but it is entirely realistic for Katniss to have a southern accent.
Am I the only person besides Collins that imagined Katniss having a southern accent? I always read her like that, I told my friends once and they seemed to think it was odd, but that's just always how I thought of her. :D I feel good knowing that Collins does too.
@KirkeySaurus I guess you're right, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and everyone pictures Katniss differently, that's what's so amazing about books, it's our own imagination who gives a face and characteristics to the characters.
@vicky216n I just never imagined her with the accent, and Suzanne Collins never really mentioned Katniss had an accent so of course I never imagined it. I don't think we're wrong, everyone has their own image of Katniss.
i like the theme in the covers, First Book: Mockingjay gets caught in the tramp, Second Book: mocking jay tries to get out of the tramp, Third Book: The Mockingjay is set free TnT I DONT WANT IT TO ENDDDD
It's super interesting to me. I'm glad the movies didn't keep the accent, but it does make sense. Katniss is from the heart of Appalachia, so District 12 would probably have a mountain accent.
Pretty sure it's mentioned at various points throughout the books that District 12 is located in Appalachia, so that's most likely how Katniss would have sounded. Deal with it. Honestly, I half hoped Jennifer and the others would have attempted the accent, but either way, I was pleased with the movie.
Where did she get her mockingjay pendant is what I would like to know. It looks much better and higher quality than the big bulky one they sell at hot topic...
I've already read the book, but I had to come here and hear Mrs. Collins read it. I never really imagined Katniss with a Southern accent, though I should have, considering I'm from the District 12 area.
I think I could read it and make myself like it more... listening to someone else isn't wuite like holding it in your hands, burying your face into it... sucks there's no Mockingjay party near me. I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
Wow. I never thought of Katniss with a southern accent. Then again wouldn't she have a West Virgina or Eastern KY accent based on where she lived? Huh, never thought of that! The woman who read the audiobook of The Hunger Games put her voices in my head and that's what I heard for the other 2 books as well.
Goodness... i NEED this book! The first and second I thought, were amazing! Such a sad book about the united states... I wonder very very very much! About what happens to Katniss, Peeta gale, and the other Characters. Can't wait to get it! :)
@gittianimeluver07 Yea, if you really think about it, alot of the characters in the books have such weird names :/ ...when I hear or read Peeta's name, I think of the pita shop my cousin used to work at x3
hard to imagine katniss with that accent, but the truth is that district 12 is in appalachia. this is the way a lot of people from appalachia speak so its not like shes randomly doing a southern accent for fun.
@theblckjuliet22 i know, but i just got an email from my friend, and she said that the book store will SAVE A COPY OF MOCKINGJAY FOR ME! but they come into the store friday, so i wont be able to get it on the release date
@o0Affinity0o Well, Katniss does live in the Mountains -- like a hillbilly. The accent took me by surprise, but it doesn't bother me. I always imagined the characters having the basic American accent since Panem sort of grows out of the American survivors of the apocalypse, which made me assume that the majority of the people would have the "Hollywood" American accent.
I know this is from a decade ago but I’m so happy that she gave Katniss an accent, I wish the movies did the same. This character was my only positive representation of Appalachia as a kid, and it hurt to see the movies neglect that.
Good thing they gave Lucy one 😅
The Katniss voice works beautifully. Remember, District 12 is Appalachia. The accent is a mountain one, not a Southern one.
Wish the audiobooks were narrated like this, first time I heard katniss How the author intended her to sound like
All I could imagine right now is Katniss with this accent screaming to Buttercup that Prim is dead o_o
Wow, I didn't know Katniss had an accent! And the author is quite good at reading out loud. I could listen to her read all three books.
I love her accent for the chapter. I am from Appalachia (WV), so I was thrilled to have my favorite character, Haymitch Abbernathy, from my backyard.

"It was such an amazing experience developing all these young characters...
and then fucking killing them off!"
Sick.
She and George RR Martin should talk.
+Runar Vollan that is what is called Realistic fiction
District 12 mines coal. Coal mining is big in Kentucky which is located in the Appalachia as the book says. That's where I'm from and that's how we speak. Don't make fun guys! :)

Katniss has a southern accent because she's from Appalachia.
flootzavut i always pictured her sounding like shes from the south since district 12 is from the Appalachian s

i really love how she makes katniss seem like a sarcastic person but saying things that are true at the same time.
and also, Jennifer and Josh are from KY and proud of it in interviews ive seen.

@thegirlwhohatesrap According to Wikipedia, Appalachia stretches from Canada in the North down to Georgia and Alabama in the South.
@midnightarmonia You mean and intelligent, badass girl who is also Appalachian. Collins herself has said that District 12 is in the mountains of West Virginia, hence the coal mines. lol'd at the accent... that was unepected
Yeah lol
WHY DID YOU KILLED FINNICK!!!!! TTT.TTTT My heart is now more than 100 pieces...
The best writer on earth, i just love her so much, she changed my way of writting forever with just a young adult novel when stephen kings books make me feel nothing
The books are amazing. No sooner had I started to read, when I wasn't able to stop. I'm telling you, these books amazed me.
What does it matter what accent Katniss has? It doesn't change anything about her character.
i actually cried a little at the end.
For all of you bitching about the southern accents. District 12 is in the southern Appalachians, they would have an accent. And anyways they're her characters she's allowed to do what she wants with them.
I want your necklace Suzanne Collins!!! Love Your Book!
public service announcement: the appalachian region includes the bordering states of NY, OH, TN, KY, MS, WV, VA, MD, NC, SC, GA, and AL. district 12 could be any of those states.
I guess I am one of the few that ALWAYS imagined Katniss having a Southern like accent? The author does as well, so guess I was right. heehee
Thank you suzanne collins
I like how she looks like an ordinary English teacher
:O
Katniss has a southern accent?
Well, this might give us some more clues as to where District 12 is located...:D
I can't Believe!!!!! This is Real. Mockingjay is here.
The way Suzanne has read the first chapter has made me cry. Poor Katniss. But she is very strong, and Peeta must be alive!!!
Kisses from an Spanish fan.
Happy birthday Mockingjay! Released 2 years ago today. :)
@ihearthatalot
Same here I love this series it's so amazing!!! I wish It would go on too, but all good things must come to an end. This book is by far the best book in the series.
I cannot wait to read the entire book! :)
The ending is sooo sad but great.! :) The last line! Peeta: "You love me. Real or not real?" Katniss: "Real" :) :)
Best book ever
Omg can't wait at all!!!
Finally we get to see what's going to happen!!
A person who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for him to step into.
She's a genious.!
Suzanne Collins, thank you for inventing the Hunger Games. :D What would I do without it.
When I finished it I felt a strange emptiness in side. Maybe it was because Gale was basically completely written off or it left things somewhat unanswered about Peta and the Hunger Games that were suggested. By all means, I'm pleased with the trilogy but I just feel it left things a touch unanswered. Fortunately Suzanne Collins is really really involved with the movie so the accent should hopefully be there. :D
The Appalachian mountains head more north than just Tennessee they begin in new York then travel south. Wow history class does come in handy :)

She lives in what would be the Kentucky/West Virgina area in the future
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Mockingjay TOMORROW!!!!! I cannot WAIT!!
I'm totally geeking out! I've got it pre-ordered on Amazon, but I don't know if I can wait the two days it will take to ship to me!!!!
@KirkeySaurus I guess you're right, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and everyone pictures Katniss differently, that's what's so amazing about books, it's our own imagination who gives a face and characteristics to the characters.
love the story, about to start reading mockingjay soon... can't wait!
@vicky216n I just never imagined her with the accent, and Suzanne Collins never really mentioned Katniss had an accent so of course I never imagined it. I don't think we're wrong, everyone has their own image of Katniss.
@theblckjuliet22 no, we dont have chain book stores where i live, the closest place is barnes & noble, or borders
This made me asleep that's how good it was
i like the theme in the covers, First Book: Mockingjay gets caught in the tramp, Second Book: mocking jay tries to get out of the tramp, Third Book: The Mockingjay is set free TnT I DONT WANT IT TO ENDDDD
@FightingHawk13 Suzanne herself is working on the script, so I don't think it will be butchered
Ummm people she wrote the books if she wants Katniss to sound like that then KATNISS SOUNDS LIKE THAT. Get over it
.--------------------. the accent was unexpected XD
It's super interesting to me. I'm glad the movies didn't keep the accent, but it does make sense. Katniss is from the heart of Appalachia, so District 12 would probably have a mountain accent.

NOOO!!!! IW WILL MOST ABSOLUTELY NOT SETTLE FOR A DEAD PEETA!!!! KYAAAHHH!! I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST SPOILED MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
she was from the appalachian's remember? I didn't think about that till I heard her voice! Katniss would have that accent
I've already read the book, but I had to come here and hear Mrs. Collins read it. I never really imagined Katniss with a Southern accent, though I should have, considering I'm from the District 12 area.
if you are payin attention, she says in Catching Fire that each district has an accent.
AHHHH THE FINAL BOOK OF HUNGER GAMES!!!! I WANT MORE!! >.
katniss is from the appalachian mountains, so the accent makes sense, although its hard to picture...
in Poland we have to wait until late november. try to imagine that.
Nope. No vacation for you little Suzie, you write us another boom and then we'll think about it
In the first book, it explains how Panem and the 12 districts were born from the ashes of a major acopalictic event.
She looked like she was about to cry near the end. I forgot how sad Mockinjay was :(
@drdantepereirea distric 12 is in the north.....the author has an accent.
@sarahbethchris District 12 is in Appalachia. I always pictured it in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, sort of area.
I've been saying his name Plutarch this whole time and not Plutark.
I think I could read it and make myself like it more... listening to someone else isn't wuite like holding it in your hands, burying your face into it... sucks there's no Mockingjay party near me. I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

I didn't really think of Katniss with a southern accent but it sounds better that way.Thank you my hero!
@gabbie8841 it was intended because thats how katniss talks
@SomethingSimpleRox It's supposed to be Appalachian. District 12 = West Virginia...
Goodness... i NEED this book! The first and second I thought, were amazing!
Such a sad book about the united states... I wonder very very very much! About what happens to Katniss, Peeta gale, and the other Characters.
Can't wait to get it! :)

hard to imagine katniss with that accent, but the truth is that district 12 is in appalachia. this is the way a lot of people from appalachia speak so its not like shes randomly doing a southern accent for fun.
I am not worthy.
*bows down*
people...think. she lives in the appalachian mountains. it's hard to NOT have an accent there.
@theblckjuliet22 i know, but i just got an email from my friend, and she said that the book store will SAVE A COPY OF MOCKINGJAY FOR ME! but they come into the store friday, so i wont be able to get it on the release date

@KirkeySaurus she's the writer?? how can she be wrong? if it's anyone wrong in this case, it should be us if we don't imagine her like that!
im from TN and i dont have this accent. i have a Southern accent this is an "old appalachian" accent. Those Mts run from NY to GA.
It sounduke she had either a disti t 4 accent or a capital accent depending on how you hear it in your head
@xxfatiSweetxx solo busca masterkyuby en google, y selecciona el de wordpress, ahi esta. Perdona por no poner el link, pero youtube no me deja.
Hmmm...i guess it makes sense that she would have an accent. District 12 is supposed to be where the Appalachian moutains are right??
@gittianimeluver07 It's different, like why not name Katniss a flower that everyone knows about, like Rose?
her hands are shaking so hard!
