I was of the understanding that UPRR has donated the Challenger 3985 to the non-profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) who plans to restore it back to operating condition.
Wife and I grew up in LA County near Pomona, I marveled at the Big Boy as a teenager and our sons all had an opportunity to see it. After it was restored the wife and I rode the "Rail Giants" excursion 10/19/2019 headed by the Big Boy. I hope that our Granddaughter, Grandson and Great Grandchildren may be able to see it in Salt Lake City or Ogden since the live close by. Found your channel looking for railfan channels

I'm currently kitbashing 2 Lionel 0-8-0's into a pair of Southern Ks-1 consolidations. One will be a model of the famed SOU 630 and the other will be a more freelance model. When I'm done I'd love to be able to send you pictures.
We have it on very good authority that at some point soon they’re going to be taking 844 down to Denver. Probably not this summer but possibly in the fall? Possibly next year? But they really wanted to get that guy out and run it around a bit just to circulate the oil if you will.

Well, it’s going to be coming down from Ogden and we’re pretty sure they’re going to be parking there by the oil refineries. Sort of in North Salt Lake. When is it leaves town? It came through Mo. a few years back & missed the opportunity to see this great steam locomotive. I do think that steam power is viable source. They put out less pol lution than one might think. A beautiful breathing piece of machinery that is functional & practical. This schedule is for the West this year. Can't win them all. Thanks for posting.
We live in San Francisco so the drive to Roseville, is a little over 2 hours. The wife and I have been to the State Railroad Museum many times. We are excited, we watched all the post and videos ever made about UP Big Boy, so we are more than ready to see it live in person. We realize there could be problems along the way, so we will check the web sight, to stay informed.

I can remember as a kid seeing the old 4294 Cab forward sitting out in an old park along the American River before I-5 when it was Highway 99 entering Sacramento from the north. and then passing the railyards before entering downtown Sacramento.
Nope. I doubt it ever will. But who knows. But all the SP track is now UP and UP has no interest in restoring any non UP equipment nor even any more UP! It would need to go to Portland and they can’t afford it. Silvas perhaps. In 10 or 20 years.. but I doubt it will ever happen.
I used to climb all over it when it was at the Pomona fairgrounds. You’re right about how big the firebox is. You can throw a party in there! I still haven’t had a chance to see it run yet.😢

I missed out on the 2019 tour and being a resident of Utah in the SLC valley it killed me that I was unaware of that tour until months later. I plan to be all over this tour!

Is the challenger the original one that ran from Chicago to Los Angeles? If so, I and my mother rode that train in 1941 from Iowa to California. That was in October/November 1941. Being nearly 7 years old, it was quite an experience. If the Challenger, which is in Cheyenne, according to what you have said, is the original one I definitely will make a trip to Cheyenne. Yup. Fast amazing locomotives. And that’s the last one. All of the rest have been scrapped down. But at least that one survives and is currently being rebuilt and fully restored in Silvis Illinois.
There are tons of the fur in their storage yard at promontory point! Check google maps satellite view. The redwood is all in their shop. Costs a bunch.

I have often wondered what the freight train engineers think/say/etc, when they see 844 or 4014 pass them out on the high iron. Do they secretly wish that they were at the throttle, like the rest of us? I have often said, "railroad engineers" are really just great big kids living their dream". So it must be even more so with those who drive steam locos. All of us who are "rail fans" are the ones who just never got to live that dream. Oh well. ;-)
I'm bummed 4014 won't make it to Oregon this year! UP says it's because of track issues (too many sharp curves) and single track operation requirements in some sections.
Well, it was all planned out and there’s no problem going that way. It’s just that it’s a very busy single track line. And working around other traffic is nearly impossible.

When and if the traffic levels up to the Columbia river calmed down a bit, the trip is planned. It’s all set all of the stopping points schedules. Everything has been worked out, there’s just no opening in the traffic.

I remember a cold grey morning in May a few years ago. The Big Boy was not quite up to steam when they blew the whistle. It was a very wet sound ;) I will mark my calendar for June 30th at 8am. I watched the 4014 and the 844 when they went out to Utah, four years ago. It is the first video on my UA-cam channel.
I’ve been talking to a lot of people and picking some brains. A lot of this is speculation and as it turns out some of it is wrong. I’ll be making corrections as I go. In fact, I have an update going up in the morning with a few corrections and a little more detail. For the most part, however this is correct. the one big problem is I was assuming the train would be on display as would make sense, however, as it turns out, it will only have public displays in Ogden and Roseville. Unless any changes are made to the schedule, it will be off-limits everywhere else.
@@ToyManTelevision couldnt up crew run her on other tracks? With maybe a local engineer for track knowledge in the cab, which is plenty big enough. Wanting own infrastructure is of course valid as it surely ads flexibility

Is this some inside info? Your specific layover dates between the main display dates in Roseville and Ogden are not posted anywhere that I have seen.

It’s coming to Texas and Arkansas in the fall. It has to stick to UP tracks so not a lot of opportunities to travel east.
