It genuinely does the heart good to see a young fella as you, Popenyco relate to music I was listening to on records and in concert way back in the day when I was a teenager. You give a fresher new perspective on Yes music in what I felt of it back then. I can appreciate that. Your reaction and commentary was spot on, even though Yes music is very integral and complex...you felt and gave it inner ardor...

This is one of the few songs that ever actually made me cry. It was after I read an interpretation of the lyrics which explained that the song is about a person dying and then passing from this plane of existence to the next, which, rather than an ending, is only the beginning of a new and wonderful journey into the afterlife. It's such an incredibly positive and optimistic message, and simply beautiful musically and vocally as well. Loved your reaction.

Here's the thing about the best of YES's music (which this tune is a part of): it expands the mind's ability to conceive of what is possible. It takes the consciousness to a specific place (which is above the ground and has access to many previously unseen vistas, each of which demands exploration). The body is partly convinced that it is traveling with the mind; but, is also aware of being in a room somewhere listening to an electronic device. It really is like a drug--a healthy, wholesome drug; because, YES's message is, at core, an authentically healthy, wholesome one.
Watching you react to these pieces is a bit like time traveling for many of us; because, you bravely allow us to see the mind and the body respond today, in a transparent way, to that which we--and exactly how we--responded so many years ago. You also remind us, with your enthusiasm, that what we tapped into so long ago had--and has--deep and abiding value. I don't know you; but, we are kindred. Be well.

I was 19 in '74, and all these years later, it's just as fresh and inspiring as it was then. Seems the days of truly creative music, combining rock into a symphonic base are gone. SO glad to see someone so much younger than me feels much what I felt and admired from a musical age now long gone.

  • @your_local_dummy4137

This is a wonderful Yes song really great. Yes music in the era from 71 to 77 was beyond music IS just as fresh, current as the day it was released and it is from a different place and time. Maybe the reason why nobody today makes music like this is because they cannot obtain that level mastery and creativity. I think you are ready to start your journey with Tales From Topographic Oceans (TFTO). For me that is their most amazing work but for others they could not get into it. One thing for sure you need to give it time. For this song; To Be Over, it is a amazing and wonderful sonic ride. Yes at their peak. I am so glad you will let this music live for the next generation too. This music needs to be alive with people for as long as there are people. It is far too good to loose. Great reaction to another Yes classic.

Do "In The Presence Of" from their 2001 album "Magnification", the absolute best of later YES. They didn't go with a big keyboard player on this. Instead, they have ORCHESTRA. It's an album very few have done "first listens" to. I guarantee you, the song will leave you "standing on holy ground". Blessings.

    "To Be Over"
We go sailing down the calming streams,
    Drifting endlessly by the bridge.
To be over, we will see, to be over.
    Do not suffer through the game of chance that plays;
Always doors to lock away your dreams.
Think it over, time will heal your fear, think it over.
Balance the thoughts that release within you.
    Childlike soul dreamer.
One journey, one to seek and see in ev'ry light
    Do open true pathways away.
    Carrying closer,
Go gently, holding doors will open ev'ry way
    You wander true pathways away.
After all your soul will still surrender.
After all don't doubt your part,
    Be ready to be loved.

This song was one that grew on me. At first it seemed soft and lilting with many layers, of course. But the more you listen to it , the more dynamic it seems. Steve must have utilized every stringed instrument known to man by the end of it, and each of the different guitar, mandola, sitar, and petal steel voicings seem to be telling their own individual story, yet they weave around one another so beautifully, without sounding cluttered.
    gorgeous piece..

If u haven’t already u should listen to some King Crimson. Bill Bruford the drummer from YES played with them from 1972-1997. If u had to listen to one song I’d recommend Starless.

How about a little candy for the mind, like Mind Drive.? Why is it nobody ever mentions keys of Ascension studio? Besides keys and magnification everything else I listen to is from the first Yes album with Peter Banks simply called Yes, Time and a word, the Yes album, Close to the edge, fragile , Tales and last but certainly not least, Going for the one. It's not that I do not like Trevor Rabin for he is a fantastic guitar player and even though Jon,Alan, Tony and Chris made many albums I still don't consider them yes for some strange reason. So for the most part I'm stuck in the 70s like many of you and I'm not complaining 😜😜😜😜😜😜 Oops I almost forgot yesterday's!!

Io sono cresciuto con questa musica, ero molto piccolo e mi è entrata nel cuore e non mi ha mai abbandonato durante tutto il corso della mia vita, Ho comprato praticamente tutti i vinili degli Yes. Io sono uno Yes Man.

Good headphones like AKG 240's will reveal even more musical details.....Emotion is in this music, perhaps more than any others.

Remember critics who used to decry a lack of emotion in their music? Immediately dismissed them as having no ear for it. lol

Just because you come from a generation of fake musicians using fake instruments , and Autotune , don't you dare think every generation was like you !
