I performed with Squire, Kaye and White in Chicago during a WGN Radio interview. Howe couldn't make it so they called Sam Ash music and asked if they knew someone who could play YES. I received a phone call from their road manage, at first l thought it was a joke...nope! I even picked the songs. Chris Squire and l became good friends and his wife and l are still very close. He passing was devastating. Great review brother, YES is still the kings of prog!
All I can say is thank you. I love listening for the "first time" again and again with your reactions nearly 50 years after my first experience of this album.
When you have memorized every lyric, and change up, and note, of each instrument. Every song requires at at least 10 listens each to hear everyone twice, and even then, just the blending of sounds, things that just happened, during recording. Chris' bass notes, the seamless change ups, and perfect dynamics. The way than can create an Ethereal Flow, then change it immediately, yet flawlessly, while still returning to the original theme, with perfect resolution. YES
I've been a Yes fan for 46yrs. There will never, ever be another band that will match Yes in their depth of emotion, creativity and virtuoso. I'm so grateful to have seen the 5 times live.
50th anniversary of Close to the Edge, which came out in Autumn of 1972 when I was in the 6th grade! PROG magazine had a cover story on this Album a few months ago! Such amazing music, I dig it so darn much, still!
Yes, even Siberia goes through the motion... Every time you listen to this, for a long time, you will discover something you might not have noticed before.
The other contender for top spot in their catalog is FRAGILE, the album just before this one. They had just added Rick Wakeman to their lineup, arguably the greatest rock keyboardist on the planet, and right away the masterpieces started pouring out. Rick brought a more orchestral approach to their arrangements which became the unforgettable YES signature for the remainder of that decade.
First listened to this album on the day of its release. Now some 40 years later I'm still blown away by its sheer brilliance. Sends me into space without a rocket!!
Unbelievable work of art. This music separates the men from the boys. You should watch them do this live. They play every note perfect every time. The best musicians in the UK at the time. Progressive music is not for everyone but if you get it, it will change your life. These guys still perform. Not as strong as 30 years ago but who cares. YES !!
You absolutely nailed it! 8 of us drove to the twin cities to see Yes in 1972 when they toured to support CTTE and every one of us say to this day it was a life altering experience.
And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning. And you and I reach, over the sun for the river. And you and I climb, clearer towards the movement. And you and I called, over valleys of endless seas...✌😊
As another fan from my youth back then, I agree it’s brilliant to see young people loving this. Two point though - it wasn’t ahead of its time, that’s what decent music was like in quality and talent. Secondly, headphones - please listen again. Your eyes will be opened even wider 🤗 All the best, and don’t stop making me cry with pleasure at your reactions 👍👍
I am 70, and it is a privilege to witness your reactions!!! To think music from my generation could have such an impact on a fine young man like you! Your reactions are priceless!!! Love you brother!
YES is just so good. Steve Howe is awesome, Jon sings like nobody else, Rick is the best, Bill Bruford is on time and Chris lays down the bass better than most. What's not to like?
Its good to see younger people finding yes music and being able to appreciate it. It is complex and challenging to listen to, sometimes, but very rewarding.
As someone who grew up on this music. I really enjoy watching the reactions of young people hearing this tremendous band for the first time. Yes. It really is genius. This may be the greatest prog album of all time. It's certainly at the top end of any list. And You And I is haunting, hopeful and loving. All at the same time. While Close to the Edge is certainly Yes' greatest accomplishment. And You And I is a tremendous work in its own right.
I was 12 years old when this came out. We loved it Pope. First saw them do all of this live in 1975 when I was 15. Amazing and definitely 1 of the top 10. Thanks for the great review. It really worked in my party basement and both the guys and girls loved them. (YES). I have all of there stuff. Rock On!
Pope, I love how after your first bite of donut, you could barely finish chewing it. BTW I named my kitten Luther. What a fantastic cat he grew up to be. He walked with me through the fields across the street like a dog. Miss you so much my dearest.
This is the music of my youth I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see all these young people discovering the great classics progressive bands of the early 70’s like YES, ELP and GENESIS and also seeing them live as well. I may be old now but I was so fortunate to grow up at such a special time in music.m
Best online reaction I've ever seen listening to these two songs! You are expressing the same emotions I feel every time I listen to these songs, and I've been listening to these songs for 50 years. Subscribed!
Whenever I see people reacting to Yes, I wish I was able to hook them up with a real stereo with some speakers that can actually reproduce Chris Squire's (and Rick Wakeman's) low end bass notes to get the full impact of his playing. Close to the Edge is a true masterpiece: I've been in love since first listen many years ago. Thanks! Keep going with Yes. Peace from SF
Hey man, you found the Effin Mona Lisa right here! Right out of the gate too! You have much to listen to my friend. There’s also RUSH, but we won’t get into that just yet LOL. Honestly, I loved your reaction man. It made me remember the first time I heard it, a long time ago. The messed up part is now you will compare every song you hear to this one. Nothing will even come close. I’m so happy to see younger people really listening to music like this. It will never be duplicated or copied, no one will ever make music like this again. It needs to be kept alive by people like you! Thank You so much for listening to it!
I first loved this in 1972 as an 18 year-old and 51 years later I'm as dazzled as I was back then... and in 50 years I bet you will be too! Wonderful to see this masterpiece inspiring you my friend! 🎶💜🎶
I saw Yes during their tour called Yes in the Round. A round rotating stage in the middle of a hockey arena, with the sound system hanging from the ceiling. The Old Yesheads will know what I'm talking about.
Great reaction! I disagree that Yes were ahead of their time; they were within their time, many of their contemporaries were putting out very complex arrangements ( King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra to name 2) but the output, on the other hand is TIMELESS. This album never fails to deliver me, a fan of over 40 years. You are keeping great music alive, thank you!
From Feb. 1971 to Sept. 1972 3 albums released, The Yes Album, Fragile and this masterpiece, there's some great stuff after smattered about the decades to follow but those 3 albums are the holy trinity of YES, listen to them all. Stop reading and GO already!
Hey first up get yourself a good pair of headphones with full bass the difference is amazing. Yes are very different in their own space. Their music is so distinctive. This is a great album in fact the number 1 prog rock album ever. Yes were always perfect in the studio but they were even better on stage. How they played the long complex songs on stage is really amazing and treat for your ears. You should check out Yessongs (1973) sometime. But first try the "The Yes Album" and "Fragile" those two albums are great too. It's really great to see young people getting into this amazing music because nobody anywhere is even close to what Yes were like in the 70's. This music is multilayered and complex so it really does take several listens to really get to know this music then working out the lyrics is fun too. Great reaction look forward to your next Yes adventure.
Great reaction video. There were people back in the 70s who made fun of me for listening to music like this. It's nice to see people appreciating it so well now.
Crazy, huh? Makes one wonder why this band isn't at the top of more lists. Close to the Edge is definitely a top shelf recording, but they produced several albums over the years with various personnel changes in the band that are freaking amazing. The Yes Album, Fragile, Tales from Topographic Oceans (one of their most challenging,) Relayer (I'd suggest you listen to this one - mind blowing,) and Going For The One, are all phenomenal. Glad you're getting into them. Music Can Heal the Soul.
Don't be jealous, I've seen CTTE, Tales, Relayer, Awaken live more than I will admit. My favorite part of the day is when I wake up and with a cup of tea sit in my black walnut grove and without my phone replay Yes in my head. It's all ingrained in me. I can hear it anytime I shut my mind down and meditate. Thank whatever created us for Yes.

YES!
Musical giants walked the Earth in the 70's.
AGREED
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Indeed!
Precious relics of a lost civilization...
Musical prog rock giants are walking the earth right now, but they're not being given opportunities they need
I'm not saying that Close to the Edge is the best album of all time but it's certainly in the top 1.
And I’m not saying it’s the best album of all time but I am saying it is the best album of all time.
I'm sure Brian Clough would agree😉
And I am not saying it is the top album of all time. It's second top album, because everybody else thinks theirs is number 1.
Fuuny, ....good one!
A neighborhood kid dropped a stockpile of albums by accident in front of my house growing up.. my turn on to CTTE. It was meant to be.
This album changed my life.
Close To The Edge is an all time legendary album hands down, all 3 songs are pure perfecrion

The greatest progressive rock band in musical history. Truth be known, they're from another planet.
Tell the Moondogs, tell the Martians.

Jon Anderson's vocals tie it all together..All world class musicians!!
