They wrote and performed this song with all acoustic instruments as a response to jazz purists who were criticizing them for using electric instruments and playing jazz-rock fusion. This song is one of my favorite acoustic jazz pieces.
Really?! Wow. I never knew that. And actually, I thought for years that SC was playing some sort of electric double bass and then switches to electric bass. That was until I saw them playing it live in an old video posted to YT several years ago. I guess the amplification still gives it a synthesized feel, but what a “clap back” to the critics this must have been.
This! This! I always marveled at the fact that this was acoustic. Played it for friends and only after playing pointed out that is was all acoustic. Stunned faces. But the idea that Chick and Company did this to thumb their noses at the Jazz establishment had never occurred to me. I love it. Side note: Could this composition have been performed in 1920? Yes. Let that sink in.
Im 60 yrs old ,,i grew up with these guys since i was 16 ,,Stanley ,& Al my favorites ,,All the guys are amazing ,,and this is one of the greatest albums of musician-ship i have ever heard !! Glad u enjoyed it
Simply one of the best fusion band ever. Chick, Stanly, Al, and Lenny are all masters of the craft. Saw them live twice and they really play this well. And many many great tunes from that CD. Enjoy and welcome to the long and winding fusion road.
Awesome !! Choice. So I was born in 69 and my mother loved this album especially Midieval Overture. Our neighbor was a Xylophone player in the Rochester NY Crusaders and would play this song for her. Marching Bands were absolutely huge in the mid to late 70’s. Please give a listen to Midieval Overture
Chick Corea-Keys Lenny White-Drums Stanley Clarke-Bass Al Di Meola-Guitar Return to Forever, founded by Chick Corea, is often cited as one of the core groups of the jazz-fusion movement of the 1970s. Polo, you’re listening to one of the essential albums and songs of the genre. The point of the channel is for you to give us your reaction to music that you haven’t heard or are not comfortable with. You’ve definitely done that here. This music is not for everyone, mostly older people adore this music. Five great bassists for me of the modern era are: Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and maybe the best of all, Jaco Pastorius. You’ve now heard two of them, Stanley and Marcus. Great reaction and thanks for keeping an open mind. 🔥✌️
You jumped in the deep end. All four of these musicians are masters, some of multiple instruments. They all have extensive solo careers, and tons of collaborations with other artists, that showcase their virtuosity as well. This is one of the defining bands, and albums, of the genre known as “jazz rock fusion” or “fusion.” Often, but not exclusively, instrumental, and showcasing virtuoso performances. The best in the genre also exhibit great songwriting. Happy exploring!
I love the genuine joy of discovery on your face when you discovered that there is another level of musicians and musicianship. These guys were masters of their prospective instruments at the time that collaborated. And magic happened.
Polo! Im almost 66 now and I believe it was 1975 when my girlfriend and I went walking downtown San Diego. We were walking on C Street and stumbled upon The Community Concourse. The Marquis read : Chick Corea and RETURN TO FOREVER. We were about 17 or 18 years old and pretty much rock and rollers at the time. Long story short, we paid about $6.50 to get in about 5 minutes prior to start. WE GOT BLOWN AWAY! Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Stanley Clark and Lenny White. First half was all acoustic then Intermission. 2nd half was All Electric! I've seen almost all the most popular major rock 'n' roll bands in the world, and , this concert was second to none!!!
You've really haven't heard anything until you play the WHOLE album.... Especially, Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant, Parts I & II on that album. That whole album is a musical masterpiece
This is hilarious for me to watch. I saw them play this at the Dorthy Chandler Pavillion in L.A. with four of my scraggly surfer/musician friends when we were 16 years old. I can pretty much sing along with every solo on this song. Each of these players were arguably the best in the world on their instruments at the time (1976). And…Stevie Wonder came out on stage and sang superstition with Return To Forever backing him up. Glad people are still discovering this.
I was at that show in 1976 as well. It was amazing! That still ranks as the best show I have ever seen. I saw them twice in 1984 and again in 2008. I listen to them all the time.
What a way to start the new year, with one of the best songs ever. May your whole year be so brilliant! Here we go...and if you don't love this I will be dumbfounded. Well okay! I'm gonna put that in the "Approves of" column. The "Duel of the Tyrant and Jester" from the same album is another that brilliantly displays their personal pyrotechnical prowess (ppp not to be confused with pp which would not be proper to display). Chick Corea, RIP, was leader and keyboard player, which is why he is more forward than more keyboard players. I once stumbled into a free concert in the Massachusetts woods one autumn. A fine smoke in the air made the concert all the more wondrous. He was accompanied by Vibes player Gary Burton, another PhD in music and also master of the tools.
This is fusion/jazz-rock at it's best! All 4 members of R.T.F. could be a rabbithole, they are masters who played and learned from the greatest in jazz. More please! Peace.
Could you recommend me something in the style of Romantic Warrior but more focused on the guitar lead aspect? Something like the guitar parts in Sorceress

They are all masters. Stanley is playing an upright acoustic bass, very difficult instrument. Check out some live stuff from these guys, they’re awesome! Saw them in ‘84 in Boston.
Stanley also had the advantage of being a big guy with big hands. Even most great players just cant make the same stretches on a standup bass. He's in my top 3 bass players of all time
All star cast of musicians. The great AL DiMeola on guitar was only 19 when Chick invited him to become one of the 4 founding members You could explore all 4 (Stanley Clarke-bass, Chick Corea-keys, Lenny White-drums in addition to DiMeola).
@@cobbycaputo3332 Unless they played there more than once (which I do not recall to be the case), I believe it was a year or two earlier. Summer 81 is what I recall, but it's been a while. Definitely a favorite musical memory.
Stanley Clarke is the bass player. Al Dimeola is the Spanish guitar player. One of the greatest jazz guitar players out there. Check out his song Electric Rendevous song. AMAZING!
I actually saw them live when this album came out. They played in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (where all the prestigious classical orchestras are playing, and which has superb acoustics). I was totaly stunned at the end of the concert feeling that I had just watched four gods playing music from a different dimension). My seat was right behind the band (close to Lenny White, the drummer) and the sound quality was great throughout the concert hall. One of my most memorable musical experiences ever. Literally been listening to RTF Since I was 18 my friends turned me onto progressive jazz when everybody else was tripping on glam rock… We thought we were so cool, ❤ Stanley, Clark, bro !
Released in 1976 ( I was 21 yrs old), I was all smiles watching your reaction to this piece of music. At the start of the piece, your face said " I'm not too sure where this is going "..my same reaction 47 yrs ago !!!!,, but you smiled when you understood, after the intro, what was happening. I was fortunate enough to see these guys at Vanderbuilt University in the early 1980's. I even got Stanley Clarke's(the Bass Player) autograph. It still ranks as one of the top 5 concerts I've seen.If you liked the Bass on ths one, his solo album School Days is World Class.

RTF was the class of Jazz Fusion. Led by Chic Corea on keys, Stanley Clarke on upright bass Al DiMeola on acoustic guitar and Lenny White on the skins. All acoustic. If you go to UA-cam and watch the live version it is very much enjoyable. Stanley goes back and forth using fingering and a bow. RTF was ahead of their time. Check out all their music. Another band who come about in fusion was from across the pond named Brand X. Phil Collins on drums of course Percy Jones fretless bass master and John Goodsall on guitar (RIP), Robin Lumley on keys. Kenwood Denard also on the drums on some of the albums. If you’re a fusion fan and RTF you will love Brand X. Don’t forget Weather Report Jaco Pastorius on bass Peter Erskine on drums Joe Zawinul on keys and Wayne Shorter on sax (RIP) and the great Mahavishnu with Billy Cobham on drums and John McLaughlin on guitar. My top 4 fusion bands of all time. Thanks for the reaction and introducing fusion to a new generation.
This album changed my life - just one of the great albums ever made imo. I saw them on this album tour back in the day. It was incredible to see this music being made live in front of my eyes. It was one of the first concerts I ever saw - talk about setting he bar high! And your reaction was so enjoyable. It's cool to see someone so open with their interest and appreciation as they are seeing something new and searching for how to express their feeling about it. Music like this opens your mind. Check the whole thing out!
I have had the honor of listening to this for over 45 years and I have never tired of this album. You picked a great band. Go listen to them on your own and see what you have been missing.
My friend got a 67camaro in 1976 he bought a Craig powerplay with big craig speakers...we drove over to the westwood mall and went to record land...and bought a bunch of 8-tracks...RTF Romantic Warrior was one...we would ride around all night listening to it....smoking columbo gold.....it really enhanced the buzz....what a time it was.🎸
Thank you Barry, wherever you are. I’ve been playing RTFRM since 1976 - in my forth copy… Corea’s left hand alone launched my voyage into piano jazz…from Ramsey Lewis to George Winston up to Michel Camilio. It even had me pick up on Chopin … Now Barry…see if you can slide Jon Gomm’s Passionflower up to Polo. And Polo; I listened to this reaction while driving my 35+ mile commute home and you had me laughing and thrilled the entire trip… Such a rush to hear someone gas up on this performance as a discovery… Be well.
Welcome to Return to Forever! Four of the greatest jazz musicians (Chck Corea on piano, stanley Clarke on bass, Al DiMeola on guitar & Lenny White on drums) who came together to create in of the best albums of all time. Not one of the best jazz-fusions albums but one of the best albums, period! Along with Miles Davis' Bitches Brew this was one of the 2 seminal jazz fusion albums. It's worth listening to from beginning to end. There's not a bad sound on the album. I was blessed to see them in concert twice in the late 70s and early 80s. Watching them play was mesmerizing.
I put Inner Mounting Flame by Mahavishnu also in that category. Got to see both Mahavishnu and Return To Forever live in the 70's. Two different bands each carving out their takes on the new fusion music at the time.
Dude loved how you just started moving to the beat as this band is amazing, I bought this album back in the 80's and still listen to it often today just music played by humans with no words just music....love it!
I’m loving this!RTF is one of my all-time favorites🎶👍 humans actually playing their instruments together with precision and feeling not like this auto tune generation we got now. I really enjoy watching you. Give the respect that these musicians need good stuff good stuff.
Love it! Subscribed for this one. So nice to see someone really enjoying music that I've loved for decades. And this is the only all acoustic tune on the album I believe. The rest feature some searing electric guitar, great keys and electric bass. TY!
Hey Polo, just watched the whole video. Your feelings are so in tune. You definitely have the language and emotions to express how this hits us all head, heart, gut and soul. You don’t need to be a musician to dig as you did what Stevie Wonder called “Songs in the Key of Life.” I’m 66 and heard this when I was in my teens. I’d been playing guitar 3-4 years. Like you it was like discovering a new language that was better than the one I was trying to learn. I still don’t understand how anyones hands and brain can be so in sync at a speed that I still think…man that’s just not possible. Peace from Australia.
We had great music in the 70s. The bassist on this song Stanley has a video on youtube where he plays solo acoustic bass at the Newport Jazz Festival. Also, check out the guitarist's (Al DiMeola) youtubes where he plays acoustic in various trios with people like John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia, Larry Coryell etc...
I've seen RTF a couple times, in concert. It's insane how great these musicians are! I've seen Al Di Meola (the guitarist) a few times apart from RTF, and I've seen Stanley Clarke (the bass player) a couple times apart from RTF. You cannot believe how intense those concerts were!
I know this an older reaction. What still amazes me is this all written down (composed). Saw them live at Auditorium in Chicago note for note. Also all the instruments except for Moog is Naked, Mic to speaker. You could've seen them in a jazz club and would've sounded the same.
11:00 No one that knows anything about music would ever say that what Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola, Lenny White, or Chick Corea play on this masterpiece is simple. No one ever anywhere. BTW: The "Romantic Warrior" is Don Quioxote
You probably can find a live version of Romantic Warrior on UA-cam. I own a concert video from their reunion tour in 2007. I saw that tour here in Colorado, where I am. Great stuff. Look up the live stuff!
I PITY PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T DISCOVERED THE WORLD'S BEST KEPT SECRET AND UNQUESTIONABLY BEST MUSIC GENRE: FUSION. RTF IS A TREASURE AND WHERE HAVE I KNOW YOU BEFORE THE BEST CD EVER. CHICK IS MY GOD AND I'M A CERTIFIABLE, CARD CARRYING AGNOSTIC ❤❤❤❤❤❤. RIP GENIUS 😢😢😢
Re the bass player... ITS STANLEY CLARKE. Quite possibly the GOAT. Also.. this particular album is the pinnacle piece of the jazz-fusion genre from the 70s-80s. A brilliant masterpiece of music as art.
Love, love love RTF! Way to take the dare😮 😊 Listen to more, for sure. And if you're a fan of the bass, maybe try some Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius...
Dude, I never thought I would ever see anyone react to RTF, so glad you enjoyed it! Would love to see you react to react to The Duel of The Jester and The Tyrant from this same album. It's an epic masterpiece that shouldn't be missed!
Now, that you've listened to it, imagine hearing it played on a system that 4 determined high school kids combined their money and labor to assemble, turned up full-blast, 3500 Watts from 10 amplifiers into 40 KLIPSH speakers in a small auditorium. We spent the next 15 - 20 years, looking for (AND finding) the best artists, the best recordings, and performances, in all different genres, to experience on the super stereo we built. We had a most impressive vinyl and tape library, before DIGITAL took over! ---> It was the psychedelic era, with wide-spread availability of LSD, Psilocybin (Shrooms), and Peyote. We didn't hesitate to participate, and we developed some pretty good active light-shows, as a side benefit. Now, re-imagine everything described here, playing the whole ROMANTIC WARRIOR ALBUM and many others, every weekend, all summer long. I'm 73 and still kicking!
I was fortunate in seeing them from a balcony seat at the Atlanta Fox Theater back in 1980-81 maybe 1982. Simply blown away. To this day the Romantic Warrior album remains the biggest collection of instrument talent in the world. Lenny White, Al diMeola, Stanley Clarke and the inspiring Chick Corea (RIP). Your reactions are inspiring!
You can’t see this played live anymore, Chick passed a couple of years ago, there are some live performances of Return to Forever on UA-cam. You should also check out Weather Report and Miles Davis from the same time period, they set the bar for Jazz Fusion. “Someday My Prince will Come” is my favorite album and the song Tao is my favorite song. We are talking Miles Davis and John Coltrane, it doesn’t get any better than that!

It's fun listening with you. I've seen Return to forever more times than I can count. First time in 1972 the last time was about five years. They always put on awesome show
discovered them when I was 15 but by then they had long since split up, best band ever, was lucky enough to see them live when they did a reunion tour around 10 or so years ago.
Wow loved it you don't have to have studied music to enjoy something keep on the journey This piece reminds me of Frank Zappa check out his track Montana I think you'd really dig it also getting Jethro Tull vibes gonna want to hear Bouree one of my favs also Supertramp with the song School Enjoy
Romantic Warrior was a one of kind album. Return to Forever was a great band, but the writing on this album was over the top great. Check out the Chick Corea Elektric Band some time if you have not done so already. I recommend "Eye of the Beholder" as a good choice.

Al Dimeola " Race with the Devil on Spanish Highway" !!!!
Mic drop!
I have had the honor of listening to this for over 45 years and I have never tired of this album. You picked a great band. Go listen to them on your own and see what you have been missing.
Classical-Jazz Fusion I bought this album in 1976 Al Di Meola really shines
I saw them in 1977. Absolutely perfect musicians
That deep, rich bass sound you heard in the opus, or beginning was Stanley Clarke on a upright acoustical bass
And he started with a bow. Stanley Clarke is an absolute legend
I’ve been playing RTFRM since 1976 - in my forth copy…
Corea’s left hand alone launched my voyage into piano jazz…from Ramsey Lewis to George Winston up to Michel Camilio.
It even had me pick up on Chopin …
Now Barry…see if you can slide Jon Gomm’s Passionflower up to Polo.
And Polo; I listened to this reaction while driving my 35+ mile commute home and you had me laughing and thrilled the entire trip…
Such a rush to hear someone gas up on this performance as a discovery…
Be well.
Love love this band.
Damn I'm glad I came across this. Experiencing any of these guys even on their own is a treat! RIP Chick
When you're ready, check out the precursors of this group and their sound, Mahavishnu Orchestra with Johnny's McLaughlin. Mind boggling....
, Look up Stanley Clark’s music all of it, Lenny, White, Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponte, Chick Corea, all associated studio musicians. Geniuses.
I am a metal guitarist from the 80s.
If I was forced onto an island this is what I would take.
It has NO equal.
Look into Jaco Pastorius for comparable bass playing--- he was an incredible pioneer.
Good song to start with would be, "The Chicken"..
Thanks for bringing the class to reaction videos
“The guy on the keys”. OMG. THATS the one and only Chick Corea. The God on the keys. And composer/ arranger
I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live!!!! Perfection!!!
It is very hard! I was blessed and got to see them on the Romantic Warrior tour in 1976.
Lenny white Chick Corea Al Dimeol Stanley Clark it was the best live concert I have ever seen,Standing ovations after every song!!
I know this an older reaction. What still amazes me is this all written down (composed). Saw them live at Auditorium in Chicago note for note. Also all the instruments except for Moog is Naked, Mic to speaker. You could've seen them in a jazz club and would've sounded the same.
One also has to realize how YOUNG these guys were at the time of this recording. It's bonkers level creativity and musicianship.
Return To Forever - The Mahavishnu Orchestra - Weather Report (the top three of the genre)
each player solos and meet way out there in space and land together. Only Return to Forever can do that ....
11:00 No one that knows anything about music would ever say that what Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola, Lenny White, or Chick Corea play on this masterpiece is simple. No one ever anywhere. BTW: The "Romantic Warrior" is Don Quioxote
This is a goodn. This type of fusion got my attention when I was a youngn in the 70s and '80s.
You probably can find a live version of Romantic Warrior on UA-cam. I own a concert video from their reunion tour in 2007. I saw that tour here in Colorado, where I am. Great stuff. Look up the live stuff!
I believe this is the greatest acoustic guitar solo Al ever did.
Music magic!
"Sorceres " 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Since I was 16 !!!!! Chick , Stanley, Al and Lenny..... MASTERS!!!
It's an epic masterpiece that shouldn't be missed!
for the whole album - nice if you know what's coming - 2nd, third, fourth, fifth hearings get better and better
Loved your comments BTW!!
Check out Chick Corea ( the pianist on this track ) doing duet work with Herbie Hancock---- it's utterly mind-blowing.
UA-cam needs more jazz music reactions
A classic jazz fusion album. Congrats for stepping outside your comfort zone!
Straight up! You're going to love this.❤
I was listening to these guys at seventeen many people in my little coal town had no idea.this is a huge rabbit hole, you will enjoy for years. Thanks for posting, you are one of the best on yt,Polo all the best.
Nice. You , know it was the mid seventies when I first heard this. I was very young and I was never the same again.❤
I used tell people I considered this to be the "Album of the Century" (the last one..) I haven't changed my mind yet. there is also an excellent Live version on YT. The fans will know.
It's fun listening with you. I've seen Return to forever more times than I can count. First time in 1972 the last time was about five years. They always put on awesome show
A Jazz legend.
discovered them when I was 15 but by then they had long since split up, best band ever, was lucky enough to see them live when they did a reunion tour around 10 or so years ago.
Wow loved it
you don't have to have studied music to enjoy something keep on the journey
This piece reminds me of Frank Zappa check out his track Montana I think you'd really dig it also getting Jethro Tull vibes gonna want to hear Bouree one of my favs also Supertramp with the song School
Enjoy
Romantic Warrior was a one of kind album. Return to Forever was a great band, but the writing on this album was over the top great. Check out the Chick Corea Elektric Band some time if you have not done so already. I recommend "Eye of the Beholder" as a good choice.
Start to finish what a fantastic album
Also check out Weather Report - Black Market album and Heavy Weather album.
Al Dimeola " Alien Chase on the Arabian Desert!!!!
