  • On a wet and wild day, I went up to the P&BR to see the very first runs of their Coal Train along the section of the line between Furnace and Blaenavon HL. In this First Part, the duties were shared by three of their locos, Class 31 D5627 Steve Organ G.M., Hunslet 'Jessie' and Barclay 'Rosyth No 1'.
    The three locos also hauled passenger services throughout the day. The Railway will also be open Bank Holiday Monday the 27th of May 2019.

      The sound of loose coupled wagons, is something that evokes many memories to us of a certain age Mick....Thanks.

    Great engines and nice video. A spot of weedkilling wouldn’t go amiss!

      Fair point, but it's an expensive thing to undertake, and as seen on the National Network, the weed killing is not very effective due to the H&S requirements now.

      It's much longer now, and includes the gradient from Coed Avon to Furnace Sidings, plus the branch to Big Pit.

    Nice video Bob. Mike Pearce is a great guy . I hope to be reunited with PWM 651 this summer at Cricklade

      Thanks James, Mike as you say is a real Gent...PWM 651 is a loco I remember well when she was based at the PAD at Radyr, and I've got a few photos I took in my collection.

      PWM 651... rang a bell when I read that, I used to pass it twice a day at Radyr

    • @robmasterman
      @robmasterman  5 років тому

      It was permanently based at Radyr, and only went away to receive attention at Canton, when one of her sister engines from Reading or Taunton were sent to replace her.

    I liked the opening shot and the one under the bridge with the diesel first pulling the wagons, excellent framing. The 0-6-0 was certainly as clean and fresh and it could possibly have been. The little 0-4-0 was giving it a real go, until the Welsh rain made the rails wet. All in all, a very pleasant video.

      It was a special day at the Railway, and as always I'm grateful to be given the task of capturing the event for them...Plenty of excitement despite the poor weather conditions, which at 1,000 feet above sea level is the norm....Bob

    Must’ve been such an honor to talk to the man who worked on Jessie during her revenue days, and would later own her. Very well done video mate.

    Very entertaining Bob but did 'Rosyth' need help or did she restart (unlikely I thought)?.... Am I right in thinking the 16 ton mineral wagons have come from GCR, if so are they hired or bought? We will hopefully be at Chasewater tomorrow but weather a bit suspect... Regards, Brian.

    • @robmasterman

      Thanks Brian, Rosyth restarted with some help of sand on the Rails. It was drizzling which made the Rails very slippery. The wagons are from the GCR, not sure how they were acquired....Hope all goes well on your visit to Chasewater...Regards...Bob

    Very enjoyable viewing Bob. The locos are looking great and the wagons seem to have found a perfect home there at The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. Regards, Jeff.

    Good coverage Bob, my favourite shot had to be 'Rosyth No.1' making a great sound climbing the bank. I'd like to see 'Jessie' at the Foxfield sometime

    • @robmasterman
      @robmasterman  5 років тому

      Thanks Austin, three coaches for Rosyth No 1 on those slippery rails was a tricky job for the Crew, but they sorted it out in the end. Jessie is well known in the Cardiff area, and spent several years as Thomas on the Llangollen, a powerful loco that would make a wonderful sight on the Foxfield..One day maybe.

    Yes, I noticed on my favourite Porthcawl Webcam that it looked rather wet in Wales. Been dry down here though, in fact it quite a nice evening now.
    That new shed looks impressive, Jessie looks great on the coal wagons. Good sound from the 31 too.

      Being 1,000' feet above sea level, the weather can be unpredictable, which is part of this Railway's character. These wagons were part of the GCR's windcutter set, and is now the only coal train on any South Wales Railway. More footage in part two from inside the cab of the 31.

    Usually when people get large machines, they then realize "We're going need a bigger shed."
    The Blaenavon Boys get large machines for their shed and realize "We're going need a bigger train."

      The New Shed when completed, will be a superb asset for the Railway which with the Repair shed, will provide wonderful cover for the staff and stock, which at 1,000' above sea level, is a much needed addition.
