The fact Jim was mentioned on ABC World News shows how much of an impact this man left on not just "Action News", but the entity of News Anchorage. I wish you nothing but the best, Jim. I hope you have a lovely retirement. And thank you for the 46 years of keeping us up with the local news.
I'm 43 and grew up watching Jim Gardner . I'm wishing you the best retirement and would like to thank you for all your hard work and service to the community. Also big thank you to Lisa Thomas Laury , Rob Jennings ,Dave Roberts ,Vernon Odom ,Don Polec ,Cathy Gandolfo ,Marc Howard ,Scott Palmer, Gary Papa ,Monica Malpass . All familiar names. I’m 53 grew up with Action News. Always watched Channel 6. Moved to NE PA and still watch 16 news (their Action News in my area). Remember when Jim 0’Brian was killed in Sky Diving Accident.
Really brought me to tears. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and have been living abroad for many years, yet my love for the city of my home goes deep. Jim you are undoubtedly a part of that connection. For me your presence is part of home for me. I feel like I am loosing a friend. I wish you a fabulous life in your new journey. Thank you for always being a voice of reason and honesty. Well done sir.
I am staying with my sister here in swarthmore watching Jim garner on his last broadcast..I watched his first living in Philly...I love ❤️ the man,jim...honest broadcasting...he is honest and professional in his job...God bless you and keep on going to give us your honest and forthright thoughts on what is happening in the tri-state area...I don't watch news often, but when I hear Jim, is coming on, I pay attention..although I am living,or suppose to be in Florida, Jim is the best news man ever!!! Thank you Jim for your service to us and your honesty...thanks to your family 👪 for sharing you with us.
I’ve grown up with Jim for my entire 17 year old life. Going to miss him. My parents have grown up with him and my grandparents spent the majority of their lives watching him. Thank you Jim! Please stay active in our community!
I'm 45 and now live in Denver CO. I moved out of the area in 2006. I grew up in Easton , PA with JG and Action News. My parents would put on action news when we were finishing up dinner to check the weather. We would later watch Peter Jennings and Jeopardy. It was a family tradition. This man is an absolute legend! I remember when the channel 6 news helicopter flew over our house one summer when I was swimming in my friends pool. We were so excited as little kids. Action News is the best news show in the country for local news. Jim Gardner is the Harry Kalas of local news. I'll miss him. Thank you Jim for everything that you have done!
I'm not from the US, but I really like the way they handle the situation of iconic anchors there. They are allowed a closing. Here in Brazil it's not common, they generally leave the desk they worked for many years without a proper goodbye, even the national ones. Either by unceremonnial firing or replacement. My city has such a case. If Jim and Harry are on the same page, he is truly great. Really like Harry, after I became a fan of the NFL I watched some of his descriptions on NFL Films productions, learned a lot about the history of the games and it's marquee figures and championship histories. Found his baseball career way too late, after he died and before I became aware of how much he touched the fanbase of the Phillies
This newscast got a 79 share -- that means 79% of people watching television in Philadelphia, watched Jim's last newscast. There will be no one else like him.
I was born in 1963 and grew up in NE Philly. My mom passed in 2005. She seldom watched the 6 pm news. However, her routine at 11 pm was to watch Action News and Jim Gardner. I automatically knew I’d have to change the channel to 6 at 11 even if a Phillies game hadn’t ended yet on another channel. It was like dealing with Rain Man, lol. You didn’t mess with Mom watching Action News at 11. I moved to Florida this year but I searched for this clip. Best wishes, Jim.
I am 45 and also like so many of you grew up watching Jim Gardner and Action News. Jim was the voice of generations. He ushers out the golden era where local news casters gave us just and unbiased news and we were not ruled by panelists throwing us news 24/7. I haven’t lived in Philadelphia in over 20 years and could still sing the Action News theme song like it was yesterday watching this tonight.. With gratitude Jim Gardner.
It's been an absolute pleasure to have watched you for almost half a decade, you are truly a Philadelphia institution. Thank you for all of the memories and wonderful display of Cass and Dignity and Professionalism giving us the " News" of the day. Enjoy your much and we'll deserved retirement Jim.🌟
I’m in Milwaukee and have enjoyed watching Mr. Gardner when I lived in Philly from birth until my enlistment in the Marines. Thank you for 42 years of broadcasting.
GROWING UP watching Jim. He is right. Trust. We trust him and trust Action News. I cried. I am really going to miss this guy. I love how humble he is. When many of his colleagues retired, they had their family and friends, and sometimes a cake, in the final segment of the broadcast. Jim said No. He said, lets do the news like we always do the news and have the after party when it is over. You could tell, even during the final broadcast, he did not want to make it all about him. He just wanted to do the news and have a regular news broadcast. As regular as it could be, anyway, with everyone watching, knowing it was his last. Also, a shout out to Radnor Police. Nice touch with the police escort. Really, nice touch. There would have been a mini-parade on the Main Line down Lancaster Ave with people lining the streets if Jim was not so humble. Jim, thank you for earning the trust of my family and friends and the entire Delaware Valley. Goodbye, old friend.
As a youngster living in NE Philadelphia in the 70s, I recall watching Jim's first broadcast as anchor live, and through the miracle of today's technology, now get to watch his final broadcast from 400 miles away. Congratulations on a hall of fame career, Jim!
Watched your broadcasts since I was a child. You are one of the main reasons why I only get my news from the 6. Have a great and wonderfully blessed post broadcasting life. You will always be a part of our families. Love you Jim always.
Thank you so much Jim for your 46 years of service to our community. I haven't YET had the honor of meeting you in person but you have been (and continue to be) an important figure in American journalism. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement Jim. We love you. 💞💖
Honestly did not expect to be on the news (was pushing the bread off the truck during the food giveaway story). But he was anchoring the news my whole life and honored to be a part of this.
With My brother and his family living in the nearby South Jersey suburbs for over 15 years now, congrats Jim on your retirement. As a NYC native, I would a few times a year when visiting the area, get the honor of watching an old school and gifted News Anchor. No BS, told the news 'straight' and most important not partisan. Plus unlike say the great NYC Anchors of the past 50 years mainly such as Bill Beutel, Chuck Scarborough, Sue Simmons and Ernie Arnstos, Mr Gardner was a smart and yet really nice guy that was never ever a "Diva." Young Adults taking broadcast media and or journalism classes, please take notes. Jim is the perfect example of being a News Anchor. Everyone in the Philadelphia region, you been blessed to have for the past 50 years both Larry Kane and then Jim Gardner as the Chief News Anchors at Channel 6. Good luck in retirement Sir.
@@Melissa0774 Not saying Bill Betuel or anyone else mentioned was a "Diva" per say. I meant Mr Gardner as I far I am was aware was never ever spoken badly by either the public/viewers or even his co workers. Let alone a bit of scandal. That is my point.
@@americangiant1003 I grew up watching all of them because I'm in central NJ, exactly half way between NYC and philly. So my cable carried both stations for each network. I usually preferred the New York ones, though, unless there was something more local happening in my area that only channel 6 would cover. One time one of the long time reporters from channel 6 actually came to a friend's house, while I was there watching his kid, to interview him because he got struck by lightning. The people from channel 6 seemed really nice like family. They wouldn't have stayed on the air so long if they hadn't. It's a rarity because I actually went to college for TV and I've seen first hand the kind of people the industry tends to attract, even at that level.
Jim started at channel 6 around the time our family moved back to the states from Europe in the mid to late 70’s. Hard to believe he has been so dedicated to his job for so many years. Best wishes to you on your next journey and chapter in your life. You will be missed. Philadelphia won’t be the same without Jim on channel 6. 🥰

Regardless of the story, we could trust him and we knew he cared about "us", his viewers. We could count on him as he was always there for us all these years. Not once did he take that responsibility lightly, and we always appreciated that about him. He always gave us his best and his enormous shoes will be so very tough to fill. As 2022 comes to a close, it's the end of an Era that goes down in history for all of us who watched and loved Jim Gardner throughout his many years at WPVI TV 6 Action News. The news will not be the same without you, Jim! We thank you for everything you have shown us and are grateful to have known you as our own. We wish you good health and much happiness as you embark on your well-deserved retirement. 👏❤️🎉
I’ve never been to Philly, yet even I know the name Jim Gardner and what he means to journalism and the Delaware Valley. 45 years at any employer, much less something as cutthroat as journalism is definitely a testament to not only how good of a journalist Jim was and is, but a person too. Enjoy retirement good sir!
Thank You Jim. Your impact resonates well beyond Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. Our local news channels here in Albuquerque gave you a shout-out on their newscasts. That's what makes you a legend and icon. I've watched Action News since 1998. You will be missed. Best wishes 👏👏👏👏
Sad farewell to a living legend! Jim, you fulfilled your mission with abundant grace, professional and integrity. Thank you for decades of honest, transparent reporting. Your protégé has HUGE shoes to fill! You will be greatly missed! I wish you joy and peace for this Holiday Season. Enjoy your well- earned retirement!
It is impossible to define Action News without Jim Gardner, and it is impossible to define Jim Gardner without Action News. Hope he enjoys his well deserved retirement.
Best wishes Jim from a former Philly girl. Watched you for many many years. It won't be the same without you when I come home to visit. You are one of the best. Blessings to you.
I remember Jim with Don Tollefson and Jim O'Brien way back in the 70's. Jim you are a broadcast legend and were always my family's go to source for local news. We lived in the Philly burbs (DelCo). Although I physically left the area in 1998, I am Philly born and bred, and still have family all over the area. Thank you for your honest reporting. You will be sorely missed. Hard not to get misty eyed with the notion of the retirement of someone so trusted and talented. God bless you in future endeavors. You have touched the entire tri-state area.
I live in Columbus OH now, but I grew up In the Philly area, there’s no one like Jim, my parents grew up watching Jim as did I. Jim enjoy your retirement!
As my Dad would have said, had he been here to see Jim's final broadcast, "There goes a CLASS ACT!" You will be sorely missed, Jim Gardner! God Bless you and your family!
WOW !!!!! I remember when I first came here in the 70s. I remember the opening theme. And I remember you Jim. You are a true professional and an icon for Eastern Pennsylvania. I hope you enjoy your retirement. I will miss seeing you on TV.
A class act! Have watched Jim Gardner since 1977 and, although I haven't lived in the Philadelphia area in 30 years, will miss him. Best wishes for retirement, Jim. You have earned it.
Jim Gardner we will miss you and enjoy your retirement. You along with Jim O’Brien (RIP),Marc Howard, Lisa Thomas Laury, Dave Roberts, Rick Williams, Monica Malpass, Gary Papa (RIP), David Murphy, Jeff Kaye (RIP), Rob Jennings and Vernon Odom are the 6ABC legends. We are grateful to have you delivering news every weeknight for 46 years. God bless, Jim !! Cheers from Louisiana 🥂
There were 2 people who I have always wanted to meet. 1. Jim Gardner 2. Grace Jones Been watching Jim Gardner since taking naps at the babysitter when I was little. Probably at the top of anyone's list in Philadelphia as a trusted person. He could probably knock on any random door and sit at anyone's table for dinner. Thank you, Jim Gardner.
Jim, thank you. You are a true legend and will forever be measured as the gold standard among among news broadcasters. We were very fortunate to have you as our broadcaster here in Philadelphia. Enjoy your retirement, you earned it.
Same for me. I was born Jan 14, 1974 and I was 2 when he started in 1976 and 3 when he started anchoring the 6 and 11 pm news on May 11, 1977. I didn’t watch all of his broadcasts though in the 80’s, 90’s, but started recording them on computer onto external hard drives around 2010-2011. I must have spent over several thousand on hard drives, they are between $80-130 each for 4-5 tb. I started getting the smaller ones around 2016 and store them in plastic storage boxes from Staples. There are some 80’s and 90’s and 2000’s clips and broadcasts on UA-cam of Jim. I use Windows Media Center with six tuners as well as WinTV and TotalMedia. I record other shows and news.
When I come to Philly - I LOVE WATCHING ACTION NEWS!!!!! I can truly say… Jim Gardner is the GOAT of Action News!!!!! ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT YOUNG MAN!!!!! ✊🏾✊🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The man the myth the legend! The one and only Jim gardener! As everyone else has said before. We all grew up watching him and never thought a day like this would finally come. you just turned on the news and he was what you watched. Sad to see him go.
A testament to what this man has meant to this city over his more than 40 years at that desk is the tributes that people have been doing since he announced his retirement
I’m 40 and I remember on sick days home from school I would watch you. At times you will be my baby sitter joke but seriously I feel like he watched me grow up and not even realize it
Didn't hear about that until just now when I looked it up-- was not expecting it (then again, he was in that City of Angels for quite a while [48 years, as I understand it, first on KABC, and then KNBC]).
Thinking of the famous verse in the theme song to The Spy who loved me....'Nobody does it better...' Thank you Mr. Gardner, you should be wearing a gold jacket for the journalism HOF;
He was at WPVI 6 since the bicentennial. Since I was 2. Now he has earned his retirement. But it won’t be the same without his voice on TV every weekday evening. There are some clips and full broadcasts of him in the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s and News Archive has full broadcasts broken up into segments since 2009. I recorded full broadcasts of several news stations on my computer since 2010-2011 but missed a few due to the recording failing or the computer shutting down. I have them stored on external hard drives, 2010 to 2016 or so large external drives and then the smaller ones that don’t require an electrical plug. They take up less room. I record news and other shows because some shows and news can’t be watched after they aired online but Action News has full broadcasts on their site mixed in with video clips when you go to the watch Action News livestream section and scroll down.
God Bless you, Jim. Thank you for all these years of service to your viewers. Your dedication to the field and to us was superb. You will be missed as I grew up watching you on Action News. 🎬 My grandparents, parents and my boys have always looked forward to seeing you on Action News. Best of luck to you. Enjoy your retirement and maybe make an appearance 😉 once in awhile. Congratulations! I has a tear in my eye when I watched your last broadcast. You are a legend!
I'm not form Philadelphia. I really admire one of your native sons, the late and still much missed Kobe Bryant. I would like to expose a situation that pisses me beyond off: I'm from Goiania, all the way down in Brazil, and here we had a newsanchor of similar status that did not have his deserved farewell from our 7 p.m. news. For real, Jackson Abrão (his name) deserves a final broadcast in the same manner Jim Gardner had. It pisses me off. He already survived a brain tumor after he stopped broadcasting. He is still active in the media group that owns the station, doing internet content. I really hope they give him a finale, because he went out in 2012 without saying goodbye.
The fact Jim was mentioned on ABC World News shows how much of an impact this man left on not just "Action News", but the entity of News Anchorage.

A class act! Have watched Jim Gardner since 1977 and, although I haven't lived in the Philadelphia area in 30 years, will miss him. Best wishes for retirement, Jim. You have earned it.
The voice of my life as a Philadelphia area resident. He will be missed, but happy for him that he is getting on with things.
Been watching him forever and will really miss him. Great newsman. Good luch and God Bless you.
A consummate gentleman and one of the best to ever do it. Congratulations on retirement, Mr. Gardner! What a career.
And don’t forget the late great Jim O’Brien.
@@seanvogt221 Indeed-- Gardner couldn't hold it back having to break it then in '83 that O'Brien passed on from that accident.
There were 2 people who I have always wanted to meet.
1. Jim Gardner
2. Grace Jones
Been watching Jim Gardner since taking naps at the babysitter when I was little.
A true legend
Thank you Jim ❤️💯
Since I was 3 ..I'm 48...thank you Mr. Gardner we love you so much. We will miss you ty for all the memories God bless you! :') xo
THANK YOU JIM !

Although we moved out of the area, I wouldn't miss your last broadcast!
I miss him ALREADY!!!
Jim Gardner has left the building!!!
A testament to what this man has meant to this city over his more than 40 years at that desk is the tributes that people have been doing since he announced his retirement
Congratulations Jim been watching you since I was little Action news has always been our only news station we watch
Peace out, bro!! Thank you!!❤
Thank you Jim!
💛💛 Thank you
That man, wow. Talk about the end of an error. I can only pray that Acton news will continue to hold up the standards he gotten us accustomed to.
Era?
Miss You Jim!
Good luck and best wishes to you Jim Gardner. I don't live in Philly anymore but Action News is the best and so are you.
My family loves watching you Jim and the other old coworkers you worked with in the 70’s and 80’s now they will miss you
Simply the best, always fair, brilliant guy who elevated everyone with whom he worked and competed against. I hope he enjoys a well earned retirement.
Philly born and raised. Jim Gardner was part of my childhood. Thank you for your service to our city, Jim. You will be missed.
Thanks for doing it right, Jim!
We love you Jim Gardener and will miss seeing you everyday as you were apart of our daily lives and will always be in our hearts ❤️❤️❤️.
I’m 40 and I remember on sick days home from school I would watch you. At times you will be my baby sitter joke but seriously I feel like he watched me grow up and not even realize it
THE BEST THATS EVER BEEN Thanks Jim
Action News will never be the same without Jim!
I remember him from the 5th grade ,Jim O'Brien..etc...have a great retirement, well earned one @ that God bless you
Never seen Jim before but loving the heartfelt messages. Happy retirement.
I grew up only knowing Jim Gardener too, and I'm just 34yrs young. He's really the vet of channel 6. Take care, Mr. Gardener.
Chuck Henry retired this week after a half century in the news biz, mostly at NBC4 in LA
Didn't hear about that until just now when I looked it up-- was not expecting it (then again, he was in that City of Angels for quite a while [48 years, as I understand it, first on KABC, and then KNBC]).
Another local/regional news anchor legend in Mr. Henry as well.
Wonder who'll be on the evening edition (6 P.M.) now.
I'm truly going to miss you Jim Gardner you have always been my favorite ❤️❤️❤️ Best wishes on your retirement. ❤️❤️❤️
Thinking of the famous verse in the theme song to The Spy who loved me....'Nobody does it better...' Thank you Mr. Gardner, you should be wearing a gold jacket for the journalism HOF;
Rewatching this a year after his retirement hits different he really was a good news man for so long since I was little
I'm not form Philadelphia. I really admire one of your native sons, the late and still much missed Kobe Bryant. I would like to expose a situation that pisses me beyond off:
I'm from Goiania, all the way down in Brazil, and here we had a newsanchor of similar status that did not have his deserved farewell from our 7 p.m.
I’m 58 and don’t live in NJ anymore but I still remember this man (and my youth) fondly
