Another great & honest review. I'm sure that you have helped many folks save money and get what's right for their needs. Job Well Done!
Thanks bobby D!
I was looking forward to demoing this boat this weekend and was disappointed after I tried it. Tony is being nice. The drive cavitates badly, especially bad when going from forward to reverse. The Native rep at the demo did say the that Native is aware of the problem and is in the process of addressing it.
Thanks for the review. I was contemplating getting one of these cause I love the space and stability. Great vid man.
buy a Hobie! seriously..
Nice boat. Looks extremely stable and versatile.
It is!
Tony, Would you prefer the new 10.5 Titan over a Predator PDL, or Native Slayer propel? I am looking for stability, and a small seat behind my for kid. So definitely stability I am looking for. I heard lot's of bad thing about Titan as cavitation problem, very heavy, leaks etc, so I am hoping the 10.5 version will be better.. What do you think? ( Not interested in any Hobie lol)
Nice! Love the fact I can put a second seat in it so my son or wife can come with... One question, I thought I read it was pre-drilled for FishFinder, is that true? Thanks Charlie
yes sir it is!
Thanks for the review Tony.
Thanks for watching!
k guys, I posted this in here as it is (was) my intention to purchase the Titan and will use it for all of my fishing needs and BTB. I am a big guy, 6'2" 250lbs so this kayak has had my attention. Currently I own the 2013 PA 14, a great boat I would just like a different layout. My first kayak was the Native Mariner 13.5 and I loved the propel system.
Today April 22, I rented the Native Titan and headed to Lake Conroe, wanted to spend the day in the kayak to see if I really was going to spend the kind of bank they request for the new Titan. I have seen many videos and as always I believe and the videos never inform us on how big the person in the kayaks are they jump around do their marketing dances and rave on how great the product ABC kayak is. AND !!!! it is always different when I get in the product ABC kayak. Why?? Because the guy in the video is 5'4" and 145 pounds, a very big difference between him and me. Another big indicator to me is that all the videos are shot on glass type of conditions, never in the real world condition. It is not like when I get to the water if I can't shave in it I am packing up and going home.
Well I can say that I attended the demo days and tested the Titan, in Conroe glass conditions, (not a great test), however it still cavitation problems. Then I went to Missouri City demo days, bigger pond more wind slight chop, (better test) still the same problem.
Today Lake Conroe (Scott's Ridge) high winds as the front pushed through some white caps not great conditions to be in a kayak but it was great conditions for testing the true performance of this vessel.
After putting the kayak in the water I pulled it around to the small cove next to the launch and loaded a couple of poles my phone, a DP, and my life jacket. Of I went, out to the left around towards the swimming area. The water was very choppy, ( I would say 1-2 ft seas as a comparison) the kayak did not give me any concerns though it felt very stable even as I turn the kayak parallel to the waves to see if that gave me any concern. None I never felt I was going to turtle, something I would not have done in any other kayak.
Tied up the first set off trees to see how it handles this kind of choppy conditions, was the nose going to handle this? Was it going to be too shaky? was it going to lift and slam down getting jerked by the rope tightening up and then giving slack as it settled into the next oncoming wave? Nothing I have fished this spot many of times in the same conditions and much better conditions. I prefer the better but today was not about that. I felt very comfortable, never being jerked around never slamming down, this kayak performed great.
Released the rope and headed out to the middle of the lake out past the old rail tram entering the bigger body of water headed towards the 1097 bridge. I stopped paddling and stood up moved around and never felt in any danger. The is something I can not do in any other kayak period. I got on my knees and crawled out to the nose and sat on the front hatch cover of towards one side for strength and hung my legs of the front of the kayak. I almost fell in but what I was doing was not normal and would not be doing at anytime in normal fishing conditions. The kayak did not feel as it was going to flip, I almost fell as the waves were very rough and the wind was incredibly strong.
Ok enough about the amazing stability with this kayak and down to what I think is the more important concern.
The drive on this kayak needs to be reviewed. The center of the hull of the kayak is concave, and not just by a little, it is a very large area. I would think that it is designed this way to help allow the kayak to remain stable, and get into skinny water with it weight of nearly 150lbs. The kayak move or travels through the water superbly at either fast or slow speeds. What happens in smooth water and worse in chop is that the propeller creates positive and negative forces, drawing water in and pushing water out to thrust you in either direction. When peddling this actions causes the water to be drawn towards the propeller and you can take the center cover off and watch as it creates a void so the propeller is pulling air. Yes AIR, and you loose propulsion. When this happens it makes noise in both smooth or choppy conditions. the biggest concern is that when you are heading into a headwind you must apply more force to move forward, this causes the drive to cavitate, add some chop and the problem gets worse.
the hull being concave, and the drive unit not being longer where the propeller is down further in the water really creates an large issue with getting this kayak through the water. I don't want to fish in mirror conditions, I want to fish anytime I want and when I get to my destination and it is choppy I want to put my yak in the water and catch fish.
When I returned the Titan to ACK in Spring, I spoke to the manager, who quickly stated that he was told this was only a proto type and that changes may be made. In the same few minutes he told me that he had 24 of these units sold already. I hope for the people who have already purchased that this issue is resolved. I know that you can use the transom mount for a trolling motor but you can always use this and participate in many tournaments. I want this kayak just not sure I want something that I am going to struggle with in the water.
Hope this helps.
Great assessment sky! I'm sure this will help a lot of people out there considering purchasing the Titan.
They make a vantage seat like hobie im sold. But if hobie were to amazingly configure the mirage drive into an automatic reverse somehow i think hobie would be hands down with out a doubt #1 forever lol. Love how quick it turns vs the hobie pa. anyway a few questions.
What was the loud noise was when turning on the titan? does the drive come up quickly if needed?
In your opinion how easy is it to break the propeller? and how much would it cost for replacement/ how easy to buy a new propeller?
If available- how much would an extra seat cost?
Nice review, are you leaving the Hobie family? Guess you have to use the horizontal rod holder if you want to use the rotate back feature of the seat, otherwise the rods will be in your face lol. I would probably just use that feature for stretching, full body extension on the boat will be a nice break from the intense fishing, c'mon
yauck1 never leaving Hobie, Cmon! Lol
Awesome video and thanks for sharing! I can't wait for the ACK demo in New Braunsfels next weekend- hopefully they will have one to test at this event as well. At 6'4" and 385lbs I'm truly torn between the Titan and PA14. Unfortunately, the PA Advantage seat is rated at 350lbs so I'm not sure it would be a wise purchase for me. Quick question about the 'guy' at the end of the video: Did he purchase the demo Titan? If so, did they offer a discount for it? Thanks again and looking forward to the next vid. #subscribed
If it's the chair you are worried about, I can tell you that the build quality of the Hobie seat exceeds that of the Native. Yes, the guy at the end of the video purchased a Titan but did not receive a discount that I'm aware of. He is waiting on it to be delivered. Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the feedback. My last kayak was a 2012 PA14 and I actually liked the old style seat. I found an excellent deal on a new-to-me loaded 2015 PA14 that was too good to pass up, so it looks like I'm going to stick with the proven Hobie for now. I'll give the Titan a year or two on the market to see how it holds up in quality.
@@CrazyArrow444 The Titans are holding up Great my 12 titan I love it.
I stick to my vibe sea ghost 130 for the money ...and it keeps up with a hobie and stable
Great review brother!!!
Great Demo. Im starting to think about selling my Slayer Propel and moving up to the Titan.
kelly Sharpe you really should G. It's awesome!
Was that cavitation or some gear noise i heard while you were pedaling??
Cavitation i believe. It was definitely loud in person.
Venture Tube, Looking at a PA12 or 14 and since you have one do you recommend this one or the PA12 or 14? Thanks
14. Why not?
The PA14 over the Triton 13.5?
Yes
Thanks
yes but can you do a back flip on one? It helps me cast further when I backflip
I always backlash when I backflip..
that new addition that rotates the prop so it's quicker to left the drive out. Is that an extra or does it come with the titan?
I believe it comes standard.
cool I hope so, guess I need to call delawarepaddlesports...
just for an update I spoke with Mike from big adventures and he said it is a kit for 30 bucks called the propel prop indexer. The kit should be available by the end of the month.
Oh okay. Awesome. Thanks for the update
Think I will stick with my Oldtown PDL, well kinda have to, just got it
That's the ugliest boat ever. It's not a kayak. The flat back is hideous. Stupid design.
K what ever
yeh........he claims that it is more stable than his PA14................turns on a dime...........can hold 2 people.........has "hands free" reverse..............and the name is Native Watercraft (not kayaks) ........................to me, I could care less how ugly the back is
Your Old town PDL is awesome! Just enjoy buddy!!!
You also have more room to stand up!
What if I don't want to go fishing with it and just cruise around as a sightseer? Have you go a similar Titan 13? Probably not. Do you know that there are already dozens of video, demonstrating the same thing over and over? Don't you guys think it's boring?
Venture tube what kayak would you recommend the navtive titan 13.5 or the hobie14
Hobie
August 2021, Houston, nice kayak but the drive system locks up. After a few minutes of testing it out I thought the drive system was a pain in the @$$.
I know a lot of kayakers that have had great luck with them. Probably just a really beat up drive they are using for the demo..
Why is there water in the boat. I am a photographer and need something that won't get wet? Any help?
How comfortable would it be with an extra person?
stability wise or space? Still would be stable and fishable with a second angler.
I wonder how well does it handle chop. what about weight?
handles chop just fine. 153 lbs
sounded noisy. is that the peddle drive or is that just camera noise?
andrew common with pedal drives. The native rubs on the hull and can make a very unpleasant sound
andrew I kept hearing a squeaking noise while he was peddling. For $3300 I want peace and quiet out there, besides I'm sure the fish can here that as well
yeah I really like the native boats but Im kind of with you. for that money I feel like I need a little more stealth. Ive been out around the slayer propels and never heard that. I can hear the water sloshing under the boats but that didn't sound very good. Gonna have to go test drive one now before I can pull the trigger on this one.
andrew I really like the kayak also but for $3300 that noise is just inexcusable in my eyes. I mean I can actually buy a decent bay boat for that price off Craigslist lol
andrew unexceptionable ***
I've drove myself nuts over the past 2 months deciding between a Hobie PA12, Old Town PDL and this came into the mix. Unfortunately we have zero "test drive days" around here so relying on reviews and a lot of research. Like anything they all have their pros and cons, I ended up going with a PA12 mainly because of space. The PDL was very limited in space in my opinion, Native Titan wouldn't be available around here unless special ordered (then I'm stuck with it) and to be honest, I think they are ugly as hell, plus the 2 or 3 pedal drive kayaks I have been able to put hands on all had noisy drive systems.
All I can say is, you made the right choice! Well done!
I'll stick with my 2015 Slayer Propel !!
Being an owner of a pa14, do you prefer the titan 13.5 over the pa?
U
What is the price of this Yak
3200
how is the speed compared to the Predator PDL
Chris Scott not as fast.
where would I go to try one of these out?
This demo was through ACK (austin canoe and kayak)
My only problem with these newer pedal kayaks is the $$$$. As some have said, for $3300 you shouldn't hear anything from the drive or boat. Also, for that much you can find a decent boat. To each their own on that, but if I have to trailer it, and need a big cart just to get it around. I might as well get a boat. JMO
this yak is actually better than the Hobie in the boat category but the Hobie has a better drive system
Couldn't have said it better myself
Great video Bro! I'd love to pick up on of those kaya.... boats. I bet it would be a dream to fish in offshore in the gulf. Is it fast?
I didn't really push it hard, but I don't recall it feeling sluggish or anything.
anytime you talk to a Hobie dealer they say the Titan will not track straight. What did you fill in the field?
second question how does it feel doing a full Revolution with your legs versus just pushing and pulling with the Hobie?
I don't recall the Titan not tracking straight. Seemed to track perfectly but I will be spending more time on the Titan in another video. Hands down, the mirage drive is an easier motion vs the propel.
VentureTube in theory though the propel should be better for your knees though
Noel Laflamme (fishfinder401) honestly I'd say it's about the same on your knees. The difference is in your lower back and stomach
oh well since you say that I do have a bad back with the problem being in my lumbar spine. which do you think is easier on the lower back out of the natives or the hobie
The Hobie seat is much easier on the back and it has adjustable lumbar support that actually works surprisingly well.
you said it was light weight.....how much do they weigh?
153lbs
Heavier than a loaded PA 14...
Gary B
My outback is 90 lbs
N that's just perfect for on top loading, imagine trying to get the native slayer or pro angler on a SUV
...
Only thing is I always see a lot water in the boat so wet feet a lot seems like think pa 14 is dryer
Does it have drain plugs for btb ?
Yes
how does it do in the ocean??
It does good as long as a shark doesn't bite it.
Love my 10.5
Pale Bobby!!!!!!!
That's a nice boat... hog of a kayak though. Thanks for sharing.
has anyone ever fitted an outrigger to this kayak? I go out in the open ocean and I need that stability.
Not that I'm aware of.. It's pretty darn stable as it is but I could see you wanting more stability out there in the rough stuff.
Very good video!!
Thank you!!!
Regards.
Fred.
Freeeeeddddd. Thanks!
Oh no,Tony. Thanks to you!
I know what it takes to make these videos.
I know the effort and time.
And I appreciate both from you.
what reels are you usin?
Abu, Shimano, Daiwa, all of them lol
the reason i ask is that my bait caster ,ibird nest alot and i cant cadt as easy as you do .
Probably just need to adjust it some.
what would the cost be?
SlikRik it's in the video. 3249
VentureTube thanks, my hearing is shot, didn't have my hearing aid on. I'm hoping to get a peddle drive next year, I believe you have a Pa14 which I'm leaning towards that and outback
SlikRik if you have a way to transport the PA14 easily, you will be happier with that yak in the long run
Nice kayak cool
That was an awesome kayak I took your advice and gave it a spin and it's very very nice as you stated. And would be a great upgrade for me from the slayer 13
Did you put the fam in it too?
I just realised these kayaks are really things stuck in no-man's land : They aspire to be boats, but they're no boat - if you want a boat, get a small dinghy !
And if you just want a kayak, then get a cheap kayak, plenty of decent cheap ones around ! I've also found it to be more efficient to paddle the normal way, rather than by bicycle peddles.
I used to be a boat owner. While it had it advantages, I love my pedal kayak! Thanks for watching!
You sure do ! And you make good videos !
Thanks!
yeah dawg!
smoke them trees photography
VentureTube ballin
Going to need some YouTubing lessons
bwahaha! man you crazay
very cool
Looks like this kayak leaves your foot area very wet , every video I see on this kayak there's a lot of water in the kayak
Yes it does. I will be making a video in the future about the pro's/cons of this yak
VentureTube m
👍🎣
So you've got 5k buring a hole in your pocket, you go to the Kayak store. Does the Hobie PA 14 2017, the Predator PDL, or the Watercraft Titan get pulled home behind that sweet Van of yours? Most important part of the answer is why, I can't find anywhere why you prefer one over the other. COME ON.....
A Hobie gets pulled behind my van
VentureTube mine too... Are going to get the kit to upgrade to the 180. Or are you going to just get the new mirage drive itself.
1:35 - 1:48 lmao, good review bud. I just wish they would've done away with their rudder location.
Thanks man. I can never have peace when filming lol, and that guy on the eclipse was going to make sure of it.
The rudder location is what makes it turn sharper
Understood, but if they manufacturer it like Hobie's or a top mount drop down. It would mitigate some issues.
Keep It Bent! True but not without an increase in price. Trying to stay below the cost of a PA14
looks like your in a precarious position working the pedals
Yeah I'm not a fan of the pedal motion on these type yaks.
That is a nice fucking beard
lol thanks
you do not sale them in Florida so I will not buy one shame the state with the most water around it and you do not have any here to even look at .
It's okay Harry, i'd buy a Hobie over this boat any day of the week..and twice on Sunday.
Looks like the pickup truck of kayaks.
Only 153#s!
Hey LOOK AT THAT HOBIE. behind u 2.09 lol
Is there a propeller pedal Kayak that is for sit in and not for fishing but cruising on water along a river or lake? Everything is for fishing, fishing, to hell with fishing, I don't like fishing, I like to pedal along rivers and camp to a selected spot I like for the night. I don't need an expensive Kayak just to catch a fish, I use a river bank. Besides all these crappy Kayaks are for calm/placid waters, not rough or choppy waters. Their hulls are too low and you sit on too freaking high like a King on the Throne with multiple rods as if you're going to empty the entire lake of all the fish there are.
NOw... if someone could just build a kayak/canoe for less than a house cost decades ago !!
They make em, only problem is you'll sink....lol
People can easily fall into the sales traps. Nobody has seen one of these low hulled Kayak with a man sitting on top rather than inside the Kayak. Nobody has seen one pedaling in choppy waters or a cold summer day, etc. It's always calm waters. Typical sales gimmick, right? I wonder how these pedal garbage would handle in choppy or rough water on a windy day. To see what I see here is enough to say that these are not like the high hulled Canoes that can take some rough or choppy water. And the paddler is inside the Canoe rather than on top, protected by cold winds. For those who don't know, try a Canoe in rough water and then try any Kayak like these, pick a cold day, see which is better, see which offers some safety and protection against the elements. You can use a Canoe the entire year but I don't thing you could ride this Kayak any time in the cold seasons unless you're dressed like an Eskimo to protect yourself from the cold air. But cold water means you'll get your legs/feet/bum wet too, don't you think. Canoes, especially the fibreglass hulled ones, they can the made with a pedal propelled mechanism if paddling isn't your taste. As for fishing, you don't need an army of rods on board, as if you're a commercial fisherman. Geez 🙄
Hahahahahaha. $3,300?! You gotta be kidding me! I guess you're targeting the idiot group!!
Tom A I wouldn't say that. That's pretty strong words there. A lot of people own 3k+ kayaks and love them!
$$$$
