For those wondering, Bruce Liu won the Fourth Prize in this Sendai competition in 2016. For the final round, besides the Mozart he also played Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, op.43. Among the jury members that year was DANG Thai son, Bruce’s future teacher after he graduated from the Montreal Conservatory of Music. In 2021, he rose to widespread renown after winning first prize in the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition.

This concerto takes me back to the early seventies and was the first Mozart piano concerto that drew me into his creative world. The B-side plunged me into the depths of his spiritual and emotional psyche. What an extremely important musical introduction into the worlds of this genius. Could not have been more eye opening auspicious! PWG

I loved the conducting he made Mr. Lui's playing seem entirely effortless. I see that the young man can play a style without knowing more than the structure or framework of a work of art. Not bad though.
