Thanks for a great, informative video. I'm quite taken by this move to using fresnel-style reflectors as they are much more compact with high output - will this become a trend? Will Godox bring out any barn door attachments for them? I have heard that the reflectors have a magnetic rim at the front - is it possible that Godox already make barn doors that fit?
Thank New Layer for this DETAILED video. The most helpful thing for me is when you mention I'll get 3 and 1/3 f stop of light when using the Godox ML15 lens. I'll get 2 and 1/3 f stop of light when using ML36 lens. No other UA-cam videos has mention this as of today October 11th, 2024.
Yeah, I ordered a couple of these myself. I've been watching the ~100W tiny light segment of the market for a while, but something about Godox's approach here pushed me over the edge. I think it's those little lenses rather than traditional reflectors, it's pretty innovative. I'm looking forward to Godox making more like this.
I got mine a month or so ago (just the base kit). I kinda wish I would had waited and got the vmount option. I just got the bowens mount adapter (It should come with that in the box). I'm not a fan of buying into a custom mount modifers this way I don't have tons of softboxes sitting around. I have only ever noticed the the megenta shift when I used it direct. But when I was going through an umbrella or bounce I feel like the megenta wasn't noticeable for me. I haven't used the light with the my softboxes and I just got the bowens adapter and haven't had a gig to use it on yet. I love small powerful lights, especially ones that I can power via battery or they have built in batteries. In the corporate/social marketing videos. I love having small lights to get in and out and not take up to much space. This light pairs well with my Neewer tube lights.
Nice, glad you're liking it and using it out in the field. I'm sure the v-mount handle will be available separately as an add-on. Although, honestly, I might prefer the ZGCINE battery handle option more, depending on whether you need to swap in multiple batteries during a shoot. I've always been a big proponent for Bowens mount as well, mostly because proprietary mount modifiers are hard to find, and more expensive. But, Godox has done a great job making a lot more modifiers, and they are all well-made and inexpensive, so it's definitely growing on me. And with the new adapter, it's kind of a non-issue. I do agree it would be nice if it came with the light, at least the bigger kits. Again, you're very right when it comes to the magenta shift. Once you add a modifier at all (reflector, softbox, bounce board, etc) the CCT and tint changes, so you always have to set white balance/tint after setting up lights anyways, making it a moot point. As long as the CRI/R Values and SSI are good, and the tint isn't something crazy, it's all good.
Thank you for this! You may have just saved us a major headache as we've been searching for alternative handle grip/powerbank options. How long do you find the ZGCINE battery Handle Grip lasts? And I'm assuming it's recharged using one of the cables? How long does it take to charge?
It's about 90 watt-hours of capacity, so if you have a 100-watt light running at full power, it'll last about 45-50 minutes. It comes with the cables, but no wall adapter, so you'll have to use whatever you currently have or get another one (and yes it recharges via the USB-C or D-Tap port). It supports up to 65W of input via USB-C, so if you get a charger that supports that speed, it will fully charge from 0 to 100% in about 80-85 minutes. Hope that helps :)
It seems quite robust for this rubber type of cover. I know what you mean, some are pretty flimsy, but I see this one should hold up quite well comparatively.
Before even watching the video. Yep! I have 2 SL150ii, 1 ML30, 1 ML60 and 4 TL30. Plus many many flashes. Nothing got me more excited than this. Now I wanna sell the other MLs and get 2 more ML100.
I definitely prefer this over the original ML60, especially if you ever want to use Bowens mount modifiers. The S2 bracket that works with the ML60 is annoyingly inefficient to use.
@@AlexLog314 I would definitely say yes, although I'd probably cap my use of it at that size. It's so low profile that even a bigger modifier like that isn't going to be able to add too much leverage to overload it. At the same time, 100W of bi-color power into a 48" softbox is about the limit of usefulness anyways before it gets too dim so...
Thank you for the review. Does the on/off button on ML100 works the same way as SL lamps? E.g. if I set this on on, and unplug it from electricity and then plug it again, will it needs me to turn it on again or it stays on?
This is not an analog power switch, so you'd have to turn it on each time from the back of the light. I could be misremembering, but I don't think it has a "studio" mode for that functionality, atlhough maybe it'll come in a future firmware.
Yes, this light is very, very sturdy, and the ML-GB adapter is very strong and low profile, so doesn't put much stress on it. Unless you're trying to mount something bigger than 48", I wouldn't think twice about it.
@@onlyfacts4me I didn't test other reflectors specifically, just softboxes/lanterns. There might be a very minor difference with the ML-GB attached, but it would make no real difference in a real world setup in my opinion.
if i use my 140w power bank with a usb-c cable that supports 140w, can i run this light on full brightness with my power bank? or is there a cap at 60w? im trying to find a 100w light that will output 100w via powerbank
How does this compare to the Godox ML60ii Bi-color? I'm confused.. where I'm from there's only a $27 difference between them. Does the smaller form factor of this one come with any catch.. for instance; cooling efficiency, affecting longevity of the light
That's why I like this light so much better than the ML60II Bi. It's brighter, better built, etc. Basically better in every way in my opinion, for a small price difference. The ML60II Bi does have an analog power switch, so you can leave that turned on, plug it into a power strip, and when you turn the power strip on it comes back on. Some people like that for studio setups where they rig the lights up permanently out of reach. Sometimes Godox pricing is a bit wonky. I'm sure it's just based on their cost, and it's just not much more expensive to make this light than the other.
this light looks interesting... but is there an adapter that has its own handle and spigot mount so it can take the weight of a large modifier?? I feel the MLGB will only be able to hold so much
The only other adapter Godox makes is the S2 bracket, but that is meant for flashes, and works for the original ML60 as well. The ML-GB on this light will have 0 issues handling even a 48" softbox in my opinion. Unless you're going bigger than that, I would have 0 worries about it. And, if you plan to go bigger than that, you'll want more than 100W bi-color light anyways.
@@NewLayer thanks for reply. I was looking at putting on a 48inch 👍. The bracket itself I agree looks like it can handle no problems. It's just all that weight is then transferred to the body of the ML100 and the 1/4 in thread mount at the bottom of the unit. not sure how well this weight distribution will go 🤷♂️
@@photo2000 Ah yes. I still don't foresee a problem. The light stand mount, and battery handle, have a wide surface with two locating pins (more like "lines" than pins), so when you tighten it down on the light there's a lot of surface area supporting the light. So as long as you tighten it properly, you'll be all good!
I would personally choose this light over that one. The build quality is better, it's smaller, has battery support, and is bi-color. The only other thing you need if you want to use Bowens mount modifiers is the ML-GB adapter.
100W of bi-color light into a 36" softbox is a perfect combo. If you're working inside in a controlled environment it's plenty of light, and with this light + the ML-GB Bowens adapter (or just the very slightly smaller AD S85S softbox: geni.us/godoxads85s) you'll have no issues with it being too heavy or anything.
As long as your power bank supports 120W or more, then yes! Pretty much all v-mounts will support full power, unless you happen to be using some older, 50Wh v-mount or something, which I wouldn't recommend.
@@NewLayer I have added recently to a single 100W also two with 140W, so happy to hear this! Video and other sources definitely miss this detail. The only thing I find from this review that isn't great is the Godox mount lens reflectors. 12 or 36 degree are too tight. Not sure if a Bowens mounted reflector around 70 degree would have good output compared to a classic COB, and or a facted reflector.
Fair enough! Most stock reflectors are around 45 degrees, so I wonder if they'll release 1 more with a wider beam angle. If you threw a Bowens mount reflector on their with the adapter it should work just as well in a real world setup as a 100 watt light with a native Bowens mount, so there's that option too. I love the adapters, I have 3 of them around for anything that might pop up.

Hi. Is there any way to power up this light with multi NP-F batteries to make it portable without the V mount? I am looking for an adapter. I am not sure if ML60 battery grip will help? any one tried?
Sorry, I don't know for sure since I don't have it on hand to try anymore. Hopefully someone can chime in. It should work fine because 2 NP-F batteries have the same voltage as a single V-mount. You may just be limited to 50-80% brightness max if anything. You could also use the v-mount grip for the ML100Bi and put a dual NP-F to v-mount adapter plate on it as well.

Obviously, there are other differences in the way the batteries mount, etc. as well. Honestly, I would never get a light with a proprietary mount UNLESS it's a Godox-mount, because the Godox-mount modifiers are plentiful and inexpensive.

I mean, there's a lot of lights in the "flat" form factor now from Godox, Zhiyun, Ulanzi, etc. I would not really compare this to the G200, simply because that light has a huge external controller, while this is an all-in-one with the controls on the light itself. But I agree, once the first light similar to this came out, they all came out with their own versions. Personally I didn't like the G200 because it's not nearly as portable and not good for handheld use at all because of the controller situation, and the color accuracy, at least on the one I tested, was kind of mediocre. I also think that even 100 watts is more than enough for most content creators, especially if you film in a controlled environment.
Too bright using a softbox? Or with the reflector? What modifier are you using, what distance, and what lux or camera settings do you get? I find the dimming on it to be great, so maybe 100 watts is just too much for you. Although, at 1%, it gets very dim, so I'm surprised to hear that.
