@@CassandraLang123 They are not. The 16 inch speakers are better but the 15 inches are not terrible either. The quality is just slightly less but it’s nowhere near as bad as the 13 inch MBA speakers. I hope that helps :)
This is just the comparison I wanted to see. I still have my 2019 MBP and it still great. I paid a lot for it at the time and didn’t want to loose that by selling. It still does everything it did then but I bought a M2 Pro Mac mini to run my monitor and that is great a very good bang for buck. I’d love the 15 inch MBA but can’t justify it at the moment.
As a MacBook Pro 16" (i7) owner, who's thinking to switch to the Air 15" - I'll say it has totally no sense to get the one with Intel now. Battery life, noise of the fans and laptop constantly getting hot are just annoying. The only two things that are better in Pro 16 comparing with the Air 15" - are the speakers and TouchBar, which I'll definitely miss.
The other reson might be that you need to use Windows. I have Intel 16" I9 and I think it is an OK computer. I would have bougth the 14" Pro M1 if I should buy a computer today.
I wonder how running Windows games is between the two. Sonoma is making strides with the Game Porting Kit but I bet gaming is still going to be better on the intel MacBook (not that anyone would buy it for that, but still).
Having upgraded from a 2019 16in MacBook Pro i7 to a MacBook Pro M2 Max 16in the difference is night and day. I sometimes wonder how I managed to use the intel MacBook all those years due to many of its issues with battery and overheating and throttling, thank god for apple silicon 🙏🏽🤣
The M2 Air was more comprehensively superior than I would have thought. I do think a 16" MacBook Pro M1 would be a much better comparison as some potential 15" Air buyers may want to consider that alternative (considering the similar price).
Last fall, I got a great deal on a MacBook 16 with a i9 5500m, it was actually great 👍🏽 I edited videos on the road and it never felt sluggish on its own. But for some reason, plugging into a monitor was its Achilles heel, it would chug and the fans would spin up. But a deal is a deal 🙌🏾
Could be gpu issue or maybe monitor has too high resolution for it? I have mine connected to a Thunderbolt Display and doesn’t feel sluggish at all. Even play games on bootcamp with it. I believe old Thunderbolt Display is only 2k though.
@@Heat3YT2 the 2k resolution tends to work well with macOS (which is why Apple used it in the original TB display). I used triple 4K screens on my i9/5500 and it ran fine, but it did aggravate the GPU and produced a lot of noise.
i went from a 16 inch i9 64gb ram with the highest AMD Radeon Pro 5600M with 8GB of HBM2 memory to a M1 MAX 32gb 16 inch. And honsetly, the performance day to day was about the same. The i9 with 64gb of ram handled my motion graphics and video edit work flow with no problem. Other than high CPU temps when the fans were on blast, it was really quite on par with the m1 max 32gb in my work case. Now on my m1 Max i often get low ram warnings. which i never got on my intel. But it goes without saying that the m1 max is still the better overal computer. But the 2019 top spec 16 inch is still not a bad computer at all.
Both have 500 nits of brightness, they are both the same except of the larger size and of course the 16” has a higher resolution: 2880 x 1864 vs 3072 x 1920
As far as I’m concerned Touch Bar is the answer. I wanted to buy the new MBA, 15 inch for my wife, and she said no way because she got so used to Touch Bar that she can’t imagine working without it, especially in Keynote.
I think it looks better, I actually like having the touch bar, and for most people doing light tasks, having a better speaker I think provides a better experience since I am mostly watching youtube videos, lectures, and studying while listening to music.
Thank you so much for this comparison cause i have this intel mac since 2020 and i cant even compare it to any of the current base macbook in a fair manner. Which made held back from purchasing the newer macs and i have been missing out on so many things for so much long.
The main problem with this comparison is that apple will have all but abandoned any further optimization for intel based macs. They will beat it out of consumers hands through lack of optimization and bug fixes long before the cpu is the issue.
@@DrMacintosh For sure. Im considering an i9 as locally, there are tons on CL in great condition for CHEAP. For a machine that will sit on a desk most of the time, its a hard argument against them.
They start already doing that by removing 2016 and 2017 macs from supported macs on sonoma, so probably 1 or 2 years updates remaining for intel macs before they forgot about them forever.

Hey, do you use Lightroom on it? I have a 2020 MacBook Pro intel and looking at getting a 15inch air but not sure if it’ll make a difference in exporting etc.
Still have my 2017 Intel MBP but I have other Macs now that compliment it. But it’s still a perfect 15” screen, runs most apps well / fine, and it can run Windows. Fans do kick on in tougher tasks, but there’s low power mode and turbo boost switcher managing it. It does get warm and hot too but Apple’s build quality makes it hard to let the machine go. Hard to believe it’s been 5 or 6 years, seemed like a better deal back then for an MBP too. Only bummer is the battery, seriously considering replacing it with a new battery to keep it a few years longer.
Got myself M1 Pro 14” 2021 (bought for $1300 used still on Apple warranty) replacing i5 13” 2020 (bought new for $1450) and the difference is HUGE. If your work relies on tech don’t ever hesitate to get yourself a newer device! Got my iPhone replaced too from 11 to 15 pro and my eyes immediately said me huge „thank you” 😂
I think a lot of people are buying those older Intel based Macs because these days a lot of applications are optimized to run on less powerful hardware.
Until the Crossover support is just a *little* better the gaming is better, plus there's eGPU options. Some of the game benchmark channels still show the Intel MBPs pull ahead... if there's a good eGPU attached.

I use my 2019 16’’ Intel based MBP and have no any reason to get the new one. Mine has no notch, it is running Windows on bootcamp, it looks much better and it has better keyboard. And it can run multiple heavy applications at the same time what is very very bad scenario for M-architecture in terms of durability of SSD and overall performance.
I got the 13” 2019 MBP when it came out and it certainly is fast in its own right. But I did notice the thermals, battery, and occasional stutter. I know they’re different devices, but my iPad Air 4th Gen lasts me considerably longer and I tend to see myself using it more.
You literally showed me that the intel MacBook Pro isn’t as bad as I thought it was gonna be compared to the M2 air. now if that was The M2 Max, that would be a different story
I've been using the 16" i9 intel macbook pro 2019 since release and it's been great. It is nice to be able to run windows through boot camp, which you cannot do on the M1/M2 macbooks. My gripe with it is that under any medium to high load, the battery drains in an hour or two, which means you almost always plugged in. It also generates an absolute ton of heat, to the point where it will heat up my entire room I want to sell it and buy a 15" mba now... The long battery life and low power usage just seems so tempting.
I just upgraded from the Intel 16 to the M3 Max 16 inch. It's currently in the babying phase since I've only had it for a few weeks. I carry my Intel around the house when my iPad is charging. The thermals on that old Intel machine is nuts. I don't remember it ever getting that hot when it was new. It makes me wonder if it is running harder because of newer macOS updates are more optimized for the M-series?
I just ordered a 2019 16" MBP, for two reasons: 1. I want to connect two external displays, so for Apple silicon, I'd have to order at least an M1 Pro (50% more expensive refurbished), and 2. I want to run x86 VMs. I know it's kind of possible with UTM/QEMU, but it would be very sluggish. And I might want to dual-boot into something different than macOS, which is not possible at all on Apple silicon. But because I still want to run macOS as my primary OS, I ordered pretty much the best Intel MacBook Pro I could get, which was still a lot cheaper than any Apple silicon MacBook Pro with a comparable RAM/HDD config. But I have to admit that I envy the efficiency and power of the Apple chips. And things like the function keys and MagSafe.
The only Reson for me to buy a 2019 Intel MacBook would be the ability to directly boot into native x86 Windows via Bootcamp. But since i got my 16" MacBook Pro 2021 with M1 Pro I never looked back. Such a great Machine!
My 2017 MacBook Pro (mid spec) runs fine. No performance issues here. Since most of my work is still on x86, I'm happy where I'm at. I'll take everybody's word that the M1 Macs are super duper but no need for that tech in my case.
I have an M1 Air and it is better in some ways however I still use my 2019 16" as my main portable computer. If I'm on shooting locations I take the M1 because of the battery life and speed for editing photos.
Fantastic and very useful! Thanks a lot I'll trust in you and get the new one. I was really confused before, nobody could help me in that choice, you've been so clear I'm sure now. thanks again, ciao Seba (Venice Italy)
Despite its perceived drawbacks M2 MacBook Air is peak Apple for 90% of workloads. In a few more generations of M SoCs, it’ll be hard to look past buying an Air over any other Apple laptop
I picked up a referbished 2019 i9 maxed out MBP 16” on EBay last summer. And wow, it was bad. It was upgraded to the latest version of macOS that supported both intel and Apple Silicon and it was clear that was some degradation in optimization for Intel macs. My 2013 MBP felt snappier than the 2019 MBP. A quick google yielded countless other people experiencing those problems with their intel Macs after upgrading macOS. I returned it.
I think it was MacOS Big Sur. I’m not sure if downgrading is complicated. Probably a little. But do I really want a new-to-me $2000 machine to never be eligible for a system upgrade? No.

I'm using a 2018 macbook pro. Performance wise, i have no issues, but you cant beat the battery life of these M series products from Apple. That alone is a reason to update if you have the resources.
I have a 2019 MBP Core i7 w/32 GB RAM from work - and I really like it. Intel MacOS support probably ends with the 2024 release + 2 more years of security updates. EOL is 2026. Is that worth it? I would count that EOL when laying out cash for a used MBP.
You always say 256GB model in M2 models is twice as slow as 512GB model. But you never mention that 1/2TB spec SSDs would be nearly as twice as quick as 512GB. For many 512 is far not enough amount, and choosing 1 or 2TB option would also provide better speeds as well, as a bonus.
@@nicktw8688 When going for Pro models, it's often not for money saving, but for the performance fare the money. Non of the external drives will give you 7+GB/s performance. Even if it will, it would cost waaaay more money. But suddenly, Thunderbolt 3 has only 40Gbit/s output, which is not more then 5GB/s.
As a pro model it has more connections and properly not the (software?) limitation of only one external monitor plus it is plenty of power for most people, so people take it over the M2 Air. Also speaker grills might be visual appealing to some people.
Because of this, I am trading in my Intel MacBook Pro (just like yours) for my new MacBook Air. It's insane how much I put up with that Intel macbook being so heavy and hot and running out of battery in such a short time yet cannot even manage to be high performant like MacBook Air!! The ability to export LR images is so significant considering that I have a 60MP camera. I am so glad Apple is now using its own Apple Silicon. There's a clear performance gain. People think about specs alone but ignore the overall performance/battery life on a mobile device.
Only thing the ports on the right hand side have problems. I had mine twice. The one port is completely dead. So actually I have 3 ports. My friend has the same one as I have and he had the same problem and he only had his repaired once and said he’s not getting it repaired again.
"...and it works perfectly fine." I have to use one of these intel macs as my daily-driver for company-related work. I wish every minute that I was on my personal M1 Pro instead. Boot up time is measured in epochs and it's just plain sluggish in everything that requires any swap.
I got a core i9 5500M $2800 base model for $800. I needed the large display and 1tb of storage without having to sell a kidney. Also, I get to play triple A games at 90 fps 😂. Take that apple silicon.
I just got gifted one by a friend and I've been considering selling it to get a new Mac but since all I'll be doing is gaming, watching videos and coding I might as well stick with it for now
I had a spec's up 2019 16" MBP. I fondly called it my lap warmer beach ball machine. Even with the price difference I would get the Air. Longer OS shelf life.
bro im looking at buying a 2017 macbook pro exclusively for the touch bar, something apple never should have gotten rid of..... i dont need m2 performance to type on spreadsheets and take zoom calls
I've got a mid 2009 macbook pro that's still hanging in there. I don't use it for work anymore and if I did I probably would've upgraded by now. But for just web browsing and light work stuff it's perfectly fine, even though it won't let me upgrade the OS. Given the reliability of macs and most people not needing a ton of power I can definitely see why they would opt for a refurubed one that's $400 less than a new one.
I am still living in the Intel world with my 2019 13” MBPro which is doing fine with my everyday tasks. However, I just test drove my adult-daughter’s base model M2 MBAir and that machine is buttery smooth and has more than enough ceiling to do an occasional video edit Time to save up for a new Mac!
When I use my MBP, I don't use it for benchmarks, I use it for WORK. I need a Macbook Pro for Lightroom / Photoshop / Light Gaming / Music production. Priced up some Silicon and some Intel used larger MBPs, 16", 32GB, 1TB, discrete graphics. £450 vs £1480. It's not even close. Do the silicon MBPs have faster processing with less fans? sure. Are they worth 3 x the price? Hell no. Will I even notice that CPU upgrade? Nope. Will the silicon MBPs run all the music software and all the photoshop plugins? Nope. Will they allow BootCamp to let me install some Windows 10 exclusive games? Nope. Also those webcams aren't THAT different, both kinda so-so Will the 2019 16" Intel MBP rung Sequoia? Yup. My 2016 Macbook Pro screen just died and now looking for a replacement and while the M2 Macbook Air or M1 Macbook Pro are great machines I think the best value upgrade for me is the 2019 Macbook Pro 16 inch particularly thinking about screen/audio and doing basic tasks on it.
Low power mode benchmarks between the two would be hilarious to see
That Touch Bar was such an elite move by Apple. Hands down.
I switched from a 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro to a 15 inch MacBook Air. It’s a great computer! I love how it doesn’t get hot when doing basic tasks.
are the speakers better on the 15” compared to 19’ 16”
@@CassandraLang123 They are not. The 16 inch speakers are better but the 15 inches are not terrible either. The quality is just slightly less but it’s nowhere near as bad as the 13 inch MBA speakers. I hope that helps :)
@@domturneryoutube thank you dom for the explanation, really appreciate it
Hi, it’s unclear to me which one of the two you are referring to when you say ‘It’s a great computer’. Typing this on my iPad 12.9’ with M2.
@@rob1261a the 15 inch MacBook Air is a great computer compared to the Intel 16 inch pro.
I do think a 16" MacBook Pro M1 would be a much better comparison as some potential 15" Air buyers may want to consider that alternative (considering the similar price).
my 2019 i7 is still running perfectly fine for school, i use an M2 mini for “heavier” tasks
Last fall, I got a great deal on a MacBook 16 with a i9 5500m, it was actually great 👍🏽 I edited videos on the road and it never felt sluggish on its own. But for some reason, plugging into a monitor was its Achilles heel, it would chug and the fans would spin up. But a deal is a deal 🙌🏾
no promises, but you could try using a monitor with a resolution that scales linearly with macOS to reduce GPU strain (such as their or LG's 5K)
Try low power mode when plugged into a monitor. And make sure on latest macOS. There were some external display GPU heat bugs fixed in Monterey 12.3.
So how much was that deal deal
i went from a 16 inch i9 64gb ram with the highest AMD Radeon Pro 5600M with 8GB of HBM2 memory to a M1 MAX 32gb 16 inch.
How did you say the displays were identical?
The Intel MBP display was clearly brighter during the test.
“But it’s lighter!” If you use your laptop while carrying it, then you’re the problem
Exactly what I said.
My father uses a 2017 Macbook Air. That computer does everything he needs: emails, youtube, web, and it is fast enough.
Please make a comparison video of 16" Intel MacBook Pro vs 13" M1 MacBook Air since the prices are within the same range
One advantage of the the intel model … it supports external GPU’s.
Basically half the performance for half of the price. For common tasks web browsing, watch videos and office documents it’s a very good bargain.
I have a 2019 MBP. Apple offers a paltry $650 trade in and my specs are maxed out. I plan on keeping another 2.5-3years before looking to upgrade.
We need a mac book pro SE or something . I seriously just love the old 16 & 15 inch design
The main dealbreaker for me is the MacBook Air doesn't support dual external display.
I think it looks better, I actually like having the touch bar, and for most people doing light tasks, having a better speaker I think provides a better experience since I am mostly watching youtube videos, lectures, and studying while listening to music.
I had the 16-inch i9 MBP, the 13-inch M1 MBP, and the 16-inch M1 Max MBP. There's no way I would ever go back to the heat and noise of the Intel.
If the 2019 16" MacBook never got another update after today, it would still be an incredibly usable and fine machine for another 3-4 years.
@@ryanmartinage Yeah, I got mine used on eBay like 2+ years ago. It was in immaculate condition. I think it was from a failed business and stayed inside all day. Hardly used. People take care of these things.
I’d buy the Intel version if I needed to run Windows. And I know that I can use Parallels but with the Intel version it runs natively not virtually and there is a difference. I also own the Intel Mac with the 5600M graphics and I’d be willing to share the results
Really? I’d like to hear your results if you can share them!
Yes please
I’m also looking for the results
i love the real world approach in both testing and comparison choices
Very good video! I was very curious about this comparison. Thanks! I've had a 15" Air for 1 week now, I'm very happy with it.
Got my iPhone replaced too from 11 to 15 pro and my eyes immediately said me huge „thank you” 😂
Bad news is same price the M1 air would run circles around it too..
I think a lot of people are buying those older Intel based Macs because these days a lot of applications are optimized to run on less powerful hardware.
Am I the only person who liked the touch bar on the Intel Macbook Pros?
10:33 love it.
Until the Crossover support is just a *little* better the gaming is better, plus there's eGPU options. Some of the game benchmark channels still show the Intel MBPs pull ahead... if there's a good eGPU attached.
I'm still using my I9 16", 16 gigs with AMD 5500 and I hope it will last more than 1.5 to 2 years. I just both one studio M2 max for my day trading set up because the mac book was heating a lot. But for the rest, I am still using the Mac book.
Get TG Pro make a fan profile and all problems solved.
This just convinced me to get the 2019 intel. It's literally 1/3 the price if you get it used.
800-900$ 16 mbp we have great big screen, great speakers and base performance to watch video, browsing, type some docs. That's enough for a lot of people, as a home computer. 15inch mbp model is also great, i think)

2013 a1398 15 retina is still alive and running... Notch on apple silicon is no go if you cannot disable this part of screen completely by shifting screen below this area
You don’t want to upgrade because of a notch?
It also generates an absolute ton of heat, to the point where it will heat up my entire room
I want to sell it and buy a 15" mba now... The long battery life and low power usage just seems so tempting.
Bro don’t sell your MacBook 16 because you may need in winter in order to warm your room😂
How much you selling it for
I just upgraded from the Intel 16 to the M3 Max 16 inch.
I took my intel device apart and cleaned it and the thermal difference was staggering.@@QuantaSolace
I asked for this on another video! Thank you for following-up - this was very helpful ❤️
If I honestly say, The Intel MacBook Pro like on that video. Was my wishlist device 😅. It was expensive when they were new
If all you’re doing is spreadsheets and youtube video watching, then the air is good enough, but that’s just about all it can do!!😂
The only Reson for me to buy a 2019 Intel MacBook would be the ability to directly boot into native x86 Windows via Bootcamp. But since i got my 16" MacBook Pro 2021 with M1 Pro I never looked back. Such a great Machine!
Coming from someone who owns a refurbished 16 inch i9 base model, I love it. I do plan on upgrading in the next couple years though
I wonder how the very basic MacBook Air M1 would compare to the 2019 MacBook Pro. The price point ist very similar.
maybe this is a bit nieche, but could u go a comparison with the Intel 16-inch Pro vs the new M3 Air? I'm on the fence due to the speakers, tbh...
My 2017 MacBook Pro (mid spec) runs fine. No performance issues here. Since most of my work is still on x86, I'm happy where I'm at. I'll take everybody's word that the M1 Macs are super duper but no need for that tech in my case.
I have both these laptops and the difference between the sound quality is night and day.
I have an M1 Air and it is better in some ways however I still use my 2019 16" as my main portable computer. If I'm on shooting locations I take the M1 because of the battery life and speed for editing photos.
Next comparision: Macbook Air M2 vs Commodore 64 vs Amiga 1000
Fantastic and very useful! Thanks a lot I'll trust in you and get the new one. I was really confused before, nobody could help me in that choice, you've been so clear I'm sure now. thanks again, ciao Seba (Venice Italy)
My MacBook Pro 15 inch 2015 got 186 in Speedometer and almost identical Geekbench 6 performance in single core .
Despite its perceived drawbacks M2 MacBook Air is peak Apple for 90% of workloads. In a few more generations of M SoCs, it’ll be hard to look past buying an Air over any other Apple laptop
Where is the xcode benchmark, as usual 😢😢
I picked up a referbished 2019 i9 maxed out MBP 16” on EBay last summer. And wow, it was bad. It was upgraded to the latest version of macOS that supported both intel and Apple Silicon and it was clear that was some degradation in optimization for Intel macs. My 2013 MBP felt snappier than the 2019 MBP. A quick google yielded countless other people experiencing those problems with their intel Macs after upgrading macOS. I returned it.
which OS version was in your 2019 i9 from eBay? And why you can not reinstall the older OS to run it better ?
I think it was MacOS Big Sur. I’m not sure if downgrading is complicated. Probably a little. But do I really want a new-to-me $2000 machine to never be eligible for a system upgrade? No.
@@Wilsonaire Thanks for the prompt reply. I am pending the delivery of 2019 i7 and do not know yet what OS is inside - 700$US paid 32 RAM 512 SSD 4Gb video ram Wanted to run 2al boot MAC+Windows
Good luck my dude. That’s why tried it. I wanted a max power Mac with the ability to dual boot. $700 isn’t a bad price though.
I have a base MacBook Pro 2018 15, with the i7 2.2, and I must say, after some thermal pads and other thermal paste, it is a perfect PC for daily use. You dont need more, seriously
I'm planning on buying a 2019 16" MacBook Pro with the Intel i9 because I'm someone who prefers the touch bar over physical keys btw great content vadim and max!
I'm using a 2018 macbook pro. Performance wise, i have no issues, but you cant beat the battery life of these M series products from Apple. That alone is a reason to update if you have the resources.
I have the 16 inch and I can't switch because I need native windows on it
You completely forgot to talk about how hot the Intel gets! Where is the thermal camera?
I have a 2019 MBP Core i7 w/32 GB RAM from work - and I really like it.
Intel MacOS support probably ends with the 2024 release + 2 more years of security updates. EOL is 2026.
Is that worth it? I would count that EOL when laying out cash for a used MBP.
The old design of the MacBook 2019 is amazing.
Can you do a 16 with windows in boot camp vs the 15 inch with windows in parallels comparison for performance
External drive is cheaper.
Arm cpu compatibility is still not mature. I hate to find out software still crashes inside parallel windows arm edition.
You can't run Windows Server VM's on ARM.
The most people doesn't know about the truth. ARM is not X86 or X64.
bro im looking at buying a 2017 macbook pro exclusively for the touch bar, something apple never should have gotten rid of..... i dont need m2 performance to type on spreadsheets and take zoom calls
My 2017 MacBook Pro (mid spec) runs fine. No performance issues here. Since most of my work is still on x86, I'm happy where I'm at.
Now MBP 16" Intel went up to $840 RIGHT after you posted this 😂
I've got a mid 2009 macbook pro that's still hanging in there. I don't use it for work anymore and if I did I probably would've upgraded by now. But for just web browsing and light work stuff it's perfectly fine, even though it won't let me upgrade the OS. Given the reliability of macs and most people not needing a ton of power I can definitely see why they would opt for a refurubed one that's $400 less than a new one.
btw at 3:24 I think the 16" pro looks better at that part!
Nope.
Also those webcams aren't THAT different, both kinda so-so
Will the 2019 16" Intel MBP rung Sequoia? Yup. Even the previous years MBP will run Sequoia....
Well one thing an Intel Mac can do that an ARM Mac cannot is nested virtualization. Then there is Bootcamp.
Nice overview. Surprised to find that the screen on my 2019 i9 Radeon 5500 has better rez than an Air M2. Snared the 16 Pro 2019 i9 at 16/1TB for 999 CAD. It will replace my 2013 MB Pro 15", which is still quite smooth for everyday non-editing usage. Lucky to have both! cheers
I think gaming on the intel Mac is much better. And you can also install windows for full gaming performance on your machine. I own a 14 inch M1 pro and I can’t really play the games I want because of compatibility
