    As a former Deputy Sheriff, having trained in different styles of Aikido I can testify that in most real world situations, Aikido is very effective. Against a highly trained MMA fighter, maybe not so much. Also how you train is a big factor. Being an Aikidoka a is a personal journey. If you want practical real world self defense, you need to seek out a dojo that trains that way. There is something for everyone in Aikido.

      Murray Barker "Against a highly trained MMA fighter" - the paradigm for Aikido isn't a ring fight... in a ring fight or competition you have a lot of "game", and Aikido is designed for when your opponent is trying to break you in half, not looking for an oppening, like most street confrontations are... Cheers for making a point on the Aikido Paradigm Vs. Fighting competitions. FYI, I practice Takemusu Aikido.

    Excellent demonstration. I love the move where he simply ducks down and the attacker flies over him! So simple and effective and quite unexpected to the attacker. I need to start taking ninja classes.

    The first thing you learn in Aikido, Judo, Jujitsu, or Hapkido is how to fall correctly. The Ukes are doing a great job with their falling techniques.

    i had exactly same questions as you. i would say this is one of the best practitioners currently alive, but then again, I judge from my own perception of what Aikido should be. Have a look at the other videos I shared, although they look all similar to people who don't practice :) some schools have introduced self defense as a part of grading by the way

    4:34 !! Owww. That could have caused some serious injury!!
    People are always questioning Aikido Falls.. that mere second of bad fall technique combined with some amazing Aikido, could have broken the Uke's arm.
    This video is impressive. Very strong technique! Truly Amazing!!

    aikido is a beautiful art and truly a self defence art. if anyone had the knoledge of the science behind the physicics, leverage, timing and the human anotomy knowledge they would know that it's not fake and they will appriciate the beauty of the aikido.

    @ennot: Yes, what your mind believes it can achieve. At the highest level, the practitioner should use energy instead of mechanical techniques and the attacker should not get hurt. I just learned Aikido for almost 3 months now (I go every Sunday) and I now know how to use energy and it is effortless. The senseis in my club teach both hard and soft styles, but I prefer the soft style. I also noticed that some may know how to use ki but don't know how to teach the students.

    The good thing about Aikido is no one can really hit you or grab you and have the advantage, if i cough up money/wallet and they still want to strike, I can break this bone or that bone as long as they don't have a gun. If they have a gun the defense must be a little more deceptive and strategic but still effective.
    I would advise you sign up for a class. It helps enormously with inner calm. Aikido helped me become a business coach earning $250/hr at the age of 24. There are many benefits.

  • @Commendor1337

    @olid686 Once you're caught in the technique (Thus the word "demonstration") you do not want to take damage right ? So you follow the movements and ride his rhythm. Many people see Aikido as just throwing people, they don't see that it also teaches you to fall correctly without hurting yourself.

  • @Thracy11

    Right, but what motion is included in hand shaking? Moving into someone, hand extended. Scroll the page down so you can only see the hakama's feet. What does he do? Move off the line of the attack, make his own posture strong, and move the attacker away from himself.
    He could do the same thing against a straight jab punch, or a hook.
    I agree that most techniques are initiated in a friendly manner, but you have to look passed that at the forms. Plus, its not like the ukes are being gentle!

    THE Hombu Dojo that's run by Moriteru Ueshiba, grandson of Morihei Ueshiba, is classified as Aikikai Aikido which is much softer. Yoshinkan was developed by Gozo Shioda, one of Ueshibas senior students and it is more like Aikijujitsu.

  • @HesteBremse
    @HesteBremse 11 років тому

    I will agree to that and even that I spent much longer time with Aikido. But I can also state that Aikido several times in my life saved my butt in the real world, where the aggressor would not have a clue what was happing even being much larger and stronger. This comes to the fact of fighting in a setup vs being attacked, it´s two very different things, If you yourself have no intention to fight.
    Any fight is not only about the style it is also very much about the person - I hope you agree.

    A lot of what uke (the attacker) does is important training as well: in terms of tempering, break falls, flexibility, coordination, etc. And training is training, neither boxers nor MMA fighters train for a fight by actually fighting full out (how many people could you find to actually fight floyd or pacquiao, for example, to get them ready for a bout?)

  • @HesteBremse
    @HesteBremse 11 років тому

    Yes its very true what you explain, never the less the opposite hand can be grabbed if the intention is to enter for a neck hold or in a any other attack where you would advance to to rear. Example could be a door man wanting to trow you out. But in general you are right. Actually some russian special forces use a very fast grab and hit to the solar plexus technique. But ì´ll agree it is overall rather rare. Grabbing for the Collar or shoulder is though not so rare in lead ups to fights.

  • @Yoshinkanboy

    anyone is entitled to an opinion. im an aikido practitioner by myself, and I would say that the stuff works. i know what a hard throw feels like and it will leave the attacked disabled. on other hand i also do realise that these techniques arent easy to execute in real life with resistance, but not impossible, depends how you practice. having said that,the guy on the video knocks people out easily -)

  • @HardHardMaster

  • @RendyRuban
    @RendyRuban 12 років тому

    Well, to put it simple, there's a lot a purposes behind those. This is a Demonstration, they wanna see how we block an extended hand (knives thrust). If you're looking for a more realistic fight with Aikido in it, you can find some videos called Jiyu Waza or somethin (where the attackers are free to do anything like Kick, Punch, Elbow Strikes, Grab, and etc). In fact, Aikido is one of the most effective to prevent injuries for both Attackers and Technique Users.

  • @xiealic
    @xiealic 13 років тому

    For everyone who feels that it's not real, and that what you are seeing here cannot possibly be used on the streets, you're right. This is a demonstration of the techniques we practice at Yoshinkan Aikido, and it's aimed at a very specific audience: the students of Aikido (or those who just enjoy watching it). You can't understand the technique if it's so fast that all the motions are blurs, so the master exaggerates them and makes it slower. In a real fight, everything would end much faster.

  • @HardHardMaster

    To all those who discredit Aikido... please, I urge you to at least try attending a full week worth of class at your local Yoshinkan dojo. I know sometime it can look fake when you watch it, but many masters of Aikido had thought the same when they first saw it themselves. Gozo Shioda was famous for this, as he challenged Ueshiba O-sensei during his first visit, and was promptly defeated. He signed up as a live-in pupil the next day (uchi-denshi). The training is fun, and you make many friends!

    that rlly genuinly impressed me, u must be the first aikido practitioner to admit its part dancing. :) im not being sarcastic.. i totally agree on it being an art n as such its quite enjoyable. the other part as u know i dont agree so much. say it cud work against committed grabs but thats not what happens most in real self defense.. theres some techniques IMO that can be realistically applied, i estimate it adds up to abt 10% of techniques if applied with the right timing n balance disturbance

    That's kind of the thing. Once you start any form of forward momentum ideally it is to late. One of the philosophys of Aikido is to come and greet your attacker and basically be come part of a whole movement. So the surest way to beat Takeno would be not to attack him.

    I wouldn't say aikido has perfect knife defense in my opinion, noone will attack you like in the video by stretching the hand out and waiting (and this is clearly stated by some of the instructors when they teach), however, this is the way to practice, and when you practice long enough you start to understand how you can deal with attacks and enter and still execute the throw you want even though the person draws back, resists or whatever .

  • @PsionicAnnihilator
    @PsionicAnnihilator 13 років тому

    In Aikido its simple,
    least energy used but you end up twisting your opponents arm. You don't attack really, you use his attack to take advantage of his balance and take him down with few moves.
    In boxing, you can't really take down anyone until you punch the person severely, which is very energy consuming and time taking.

  • @Yoshinkanboy
    @Yoshinkanboy  12 років тому

    that is correct. aikido = cooperative training to learn the shape and the center line, and you cant have a cooperative competition right? :). some aikido schools have self defence on the grading syllabus and attakers are asked to hit/grab harder, so it really depends on the teacher. but you wouldnt usually see it in a demo, because aikido has a reputation of peace (and it is. in ancient japan one of the entepretations was that you achieve peace only when all your enemies are dead).

    The Style that you will train does not really matter so much if you have no intent to go out kick somebody for your own satisfaction. But what will matter over time is the Teacher - If you do not come along well and respect your teacher you will not continue long time enough to get a solid foothold of any style. So look for something that is not to far away from where you live, this way you will train more often and look for a club and a trainer that motivates you.

    An aikidoka should learn to box and practice judo too. These two additional disciplines will considerably improve his aikido. In this way, the aikidoka won't be afraid to throw blows, which will perfect his atemis and the techniques that flow from them. Judo and its dynamics will give him confidence and stability in the event of muscular contact with a person in a hand-to-hand confrontation.

    grabbing the left historically makes no sense.
    Aikido comes from Kito Ryu amongst others so there would be traditional weapon disarm moves like shiho nage and kote gaeshi, Morihei Ueshiba synthesized his art from Aikido that has its roots in Yagyu-Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu (Swordsmanship), Kito-ryu jujutsu, Daito-ryu aikijutsu, and the art of sojutsu (Spearmanship). Most of these were Traditional weapon arts
    There is a lot of use in hand grabbing in these arts

    a real master at aikido can do some real damage in MMA, because they will modify it to not violate the rules but enhance their other skills. Theres nothing wrong with learning aikido to increase your hand speed for punches and grappling and/or submission moves will be stronger. If you dont know what rules im talking about violating im referring to small joint manipulation which aikido is known for.

    It depends on the practitioner. If you practiced for 13 years and could not use it to protect yourself, then my be there is something wrong with your techniques or the person who teaches you is not doing a good job correcting your techniques. In the West I noticed that there is quality issue at some schools/clubs. I just joined Aikido and I got the techniques down faster than most of the black belts in my class.

    Aikido first appeared during the boxer uprising and is supposed to use an enemies strength against himself. Of course a mma fighter could knock out an aikidoka, but only if he gets to land a punch/kick. Aikido is all about getting out of the line of fire. You're supposed to calm yourself and your enemy down, so that he will stop attacking you by himself. It's not about hurting your enemy (in the original idea) and absolutely defensive.

  • @rubbeldiekatz85

    Many say that aikido isn't efective because it isn't used in mma fights. Aikido is against competition because it goes against its ideal of harmony(=aiki). Aikido is about timing and antecipation. And using the laws of physics. You don't block uke, you get away from puches/kicks and then you take him off balance and use a technique against him. Also many aikido things are just not allowed in mma fights, because they're dangerous to a non practitioner.

    If you resist the demonstrator during a demo, your demo will probably be cut very short. So for the sake of the audience they are going into the fall, but you have to in order to resist injury.

    @dascoffe That would be pretty easy actually, An Aikido practitioners are taught to take on groups of enemies at once, slinging them around like ragdolls with very little energy involved, Your 200lbs. MMA Cuddle Monster would have a tough time.

    if its a good aikidoka he would look for an opening, enter and clear the boxer by taking/throwing him down, if he is not as good then he will try to catch a wrist and do a steven seagal Hollywood throw (and yes he will most likely catch the boxer's wrist in the face). There are answers to any attacks in Aikido, but then again you won't believe that would you?

    @xiealic Thanks for the history. Alot of people are quick to talk bad about an art and have no idea what they are talking about. Further more if these traditional arts did not work they would not have been around so long of course u might to do some alterations for todays fightihg. . Maybe not in the ring but who care the ring is not real life anyway

    @groundpounder35 The haters usually fail to realize uke has two options... serious injury, or falling. Guess which way you take if you want to keep practicing... =)

    Uke makes half-hearted attack, then takes disproportionately dangerous ukemi.

    Perfect Aikido is when your oponent is forced by u to rethink his attack/behavior and that is the main goal not the destruction of your oponent. You can do that in many different ways and sometimes u dont even have to touch a guy to do that. I know a master of Aikido that was chasing guy that insulted him but he didnt want to get him because he knowed that he is no match for him, so he was runing in the same speed... In the end "attacker" was on the ground almost unconscious from fatigue... ;)
