- Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has a lot riding on it. Can this big budget effort by Nintendo find enough success on the Nintendo Switch and perhaps as a cross-gen release on Nintendo Switch 2? What would most guarantee that success? A big multiplayer mode? An open world? Let's talk about what it would take and how Nintendo might do it.

Nintendo is going to market the hell out of Prime 4 and it’s going to assuredly be cross gen to maximize sales. A really good online multiplayer will give the game legs, to go with what will no doubt be an outstanding single player experience. This game could potentially blow past 5mil in sales and reach that next tier, possibly in the 10mil range.
Sure, breath of the wild and twilight Princess are cross-gen, but the older version was on a discontinued failed console, and the new version being more viable way to play it(Since there are no more switch game). The switch has a large audience, and the graphics is already very good for the switch version. People expected to get a Nintendo console for some family games, making the game have a lower appeal in general and the franchise do not have the recognition as Mario, Zelda, Pokémon.

if Prime 4 can't outsell Dread or barley outsells it I doubt Nintendo will be too happy about that given how long it's taken to get this game ready
Its been a bigger investment, so hopefully they find an audience for this game that warrants the extra effort.

@@AndresRestarthonestly I don't see how they can do worse than Prime Remake sales + 1/3 if they just barely meet expectations. The way I see it Remake likely used some resources to mitigate costs as well.

They didn't even expect that much sales, especially physical release, with over 1 million copies in less then a month. It earned millions alone, even with a "budget" price tag.
It's going to have a push again thanks to this announcement, and probably some more this holiday with new announcements for Prime 4.
Right now is the 3rd most sold Nintendo game on the shop, #1 is Luigi's Mansion 2 which is a new entry, and #2 is Mario 3D World.
So return of investment isn't really a problem if it just meets expectations. Especially because they need to make games rolling in after an hiatus (for the second time), so this is just going to pay out on the long term with sequels, both 2D and 3D.
There are beloved Nintendo series which are way less fortunate, like Star Fox, or F-Zero which still has nothing on the radar for more than 20 years.
It's more worrying than ever with this particular game because of the giant budget. If this fails. Goodbye metroid.

I would say it’s going decent. The Zelda trailer has a lot more views. But at least this is getting great coverage. It has a chance.
It needs a competent multiplayer component if they want it to grow significantly.
I do think Nintendo should consider making Metroid Prime a multi-platform game. The audience for this game is mostly elsewhere.

I looked at metroidvania sales and I found an article and it looks like an estimate for Hollow Knight at 4-6 millions copies, which is double Dread (as of 1 year ago) with 3 millions. It was also added to Game Pass and given to PS Now, which don't count as sales even if they are a source of income.
So in reality even if the genre is more active than ever, the sales for the single games are not that high, in fact are pretty low. It would definitely benefit from releasing outside of Nintendo consoles, like every Nintendo game, but it won't happen.

Prime 1 was a success, prime 2 wasn’t because Metroid isn’t Zelda or Mario AND it released the same month as Halo 2, half life 2, WoW, and MGS3. Prime 3 was modestly successful, but the more “hardcore” experience on the casual Wii system didn’t resonate as much, and the marketing was far weaker with prime 3 as compared to 1
I think Prime 4 Beyond in my honest opinion could be the best selling Metroid game ever! I’m pretty excited to get into the Metroid series!
I would get into a blood soaked open van at 2am in the middle of a cornfield if I heard Navi saying "Hey, listen!"
I look at the Metroid track record and i have 0 doubts Prime 4 will deliver. They always do.
Hers an idea. What if Beyond indicates a Groundhog Day / edge of tomorrow scenario, and we repay the game several times. Lore getting added each replay upgrades getting added each replay.

The biggest problem is the 2025 release window. There are many high-profile games coming in 2025, including Nintendo's own 3D Mario. If Prime 4 doesn't sell well, blame Nintendo for putting it in a bad year.
Hopefully they don't put it around gta6 coz I'm going to get that before this but if this comes out before I will get it

Still dissapointed that Prime Remastered never gave us the Fusion Suit. Also, Depending on how many Suit Upgrades Prime 4 has then I hope they add Suit Cosmetic options from Fusion and Dread. That would require something like the Phazon Suit from Prime 1, Basically a 3rd Suit Upgrade to exist.

Friendly reminder Tokyo Mirage Sessions does have cloud save support. Upsetting how Nintendo still hasn't corrected this.
Also if Prime 4 has a multiplayer that is at least as fun as Hunters multiplayer then Prime 4 will be just fine especially if the singleplayer is just as high quality as the previous Metroid games.
Just don’t release a Mario, Pokemon or Zelda game near it, and I think the game will perform well. Dread struggled because Nintendo released a new Mario party and Pokemon a couple of weeks after. It also doesn’t help that most Nintendo fans aren’t interested in franchises outside the big 4, Nintendo needs to figure out how to branch the Metroid series to an audience that’s used to buying yearly Pokemon and Mario games.
I'm starting to think the Switch 2 will launch around May or June with both Metroid Prime 4 and Mario Kart...
Metroid Prime 4 would benefit heavily from launching with a new Nintendo system as you point out in this video but it alone probably won't be a big enough system seller.
3D Mario would make a great system seller if it were on it's own but I worry it would slightly cannibalize Prime 4 or at least make the launch lineup feel less varied as they're both single player focused action adventure games, Mario Kart on the other hand being a multiplayer focused racing game would compliment Prime 4 much better in terms of launch game veriety and the long wait since MK8 will push people to pick up the Switch 2 ASAP (especially if it launches near the start of summer as I'm predicting) which in turn will push those Switch 2 owners to pick up Prime 4 as well as they'll want something else to play.
This would then allow them to hold 3D Mario for the holiday season like they did with Odyssey in 2017 which is also when we'll likely get the first trailer for Mario Movie 2 which would be ripe for cross promotion with how both projects are likely to feature Yoshi in a large role.
Throw in Pokemon Legends ZA, Monolith Soft's next game and maybe a new Animal Crossing as well and I think we're in for an exciting 2025 as Nintendo fans

Pokémon and Animal Crossing prevent cloud saving to avoid cloning thanks to local multiplayer.
At least for Pokémon doesn't really affect the game, especially not competitive game, it just hurts The Pokémon Company desire to see each pokémon as unique. Which I agree with, but it only hurts competitive gameplay (which still 100% relies on PKHex, just that lately most don't know how to make one).
Animal Crossing also have unlockables, and the whole purpose of Mr. Resetti since the beginning is to "teach" you about living your Animal Crossing life as a real one, with consequences. So have a backup to restore your state would be cheating.
It's also worth mentioning that you now can backup, but you still can't restore it on another console without the original one to delete it from. In practice, you can only transfer the save. The same applies with pokémon (except you can't backup it at all, only transfer the pokémons to Pokémon Home which is cloud based and doesn't save anything local).
For Animal Crossing is also a matter of the sheer size of the save, which I can't find right now but it's bigger than usual games.
I really can't imagine Metroid Prime having a mechanic that would require that type of anti-cheat.
Prime pinball was also multiplayer 😉
I don't think multiplayer is happening, and I don't think it needs to. I think that will be a separate project, whether it's Hunters 2 or something else. I think Prime 4 has the potential to sell 5+ million if it's crossgen and Nintendo markets it properly, and I think that'd be seen as a huge success (that would almost double the best selling game in the series).
What could possibly make Metroid successful? Metroidvanias are niche, and there are many FPS online multiplayer games so having that mode would only help so much when the market is saturated.
I'm not sold on getting this for my switch yet but if it comes out for switch 2 I'm sold

I think online multiplayer would help, but I worry the control scheme of Metroid doesn’t lend itself well to the CoD/Halo model of FPS online multiplayer
I had the same thought, I wish the control scheme emphasized gyro because then I think it would feel like a more advanced Prime Hunters.
I agree with the 3rd party and Microsoft crowd being interested in Metroid, all the more reason for the game to have a great Multiplayer alongside the great single player we know we’re getting

We have to understand that the game industry today is way different than what it was 20 years ago.
I don't think the fact Prime 4 is coming out at the end of the Switch lifespan, probably after Nintendo makes the jump to the next generation is gonna hurt too much it's sales potential.
Nowadays most consoles are backwards compatible and there's still games being released on Xbox one and PS5.

I hope it sells well, Nintendo has moved away from AAA games enough already. If Prime 4 doesn't sell well, the only AAA games left Nintendo will develop will be Mario & Zelda.
Ultimately they're a business, and if cheaper, AA games, remasters & enhanced ports make more money, they'll just continue in that direction.

Well, the history doesnt support the idea that it has to sell a lot. For 40 years Metroid has sold bad comparing to the other series but they come back to Metroid anyway. I think they do that partly because it is so different from everything else they make, partly because they know Metroid fans love it so much. It obviously isnt because of sales numbers.
Be glad Nintendo never bought by Microsoft because there wouldn’t be any Metroid games today
Theoretically, the crisis of Other M and Federation Force should’ve killed Metroid. Even having a logo for Prime 4 felt impossible, which is what made a literal logo cause fans to believe in the project for at least 5 years, some of the more hardcore fans almost expecting it after 7 years.
The fact that Metroid consistently doesn’t do sales and yet gets so much treatment in remakes and sequels is a good indicator that Nintendo isn’t treating the series out of any financial need, or at least it’s not their main priority.

I believe if they market Prime 4 by say, showing Prime, then Prime 2, then Prime 3 and then, the BIG Prime 4 show on their UA-cam account, it would not only show all the Primes so new players get to know the series, but also build up to Prime 4. Maybe start a small section of Prime, a little bigger for 2 then 3 then the big finally, PRIME 4.
Also, making Prime 3 playable on conventual controllers would really help. I remember allot of people really unhappy about motion control only

The sad reality is that, for whatever reason, games in this genre, 2D or 3D, don’t sell like other genres do.
In fact, Dread is not only the best selling Metroid game ever, it’s the best selling “metroidvania” game, period. We don’t know digital sales, I’m sure it’s well over 3M total, since that’s only physical copies, but it beats every other title like Ori, Hollow Knight, SotN and others, by a wide margin.
I hope Prime 4 blows this genre’s doors wide open and attract new players. It’s a travesty Metroid can’t sell as well as every other main Nintendo franchise.
Hollow knight sold 5M overall (pc and consoles) but yeah, the metroidvania genre is a niche and most big companies dont make them. Only nintendo and recently ubisoft.
@@cristiany140 Every stat only shows 3 million for Hollow Knight. The fact that Dread tied it outsold it on only one console, as opposed to a multi platform game, still proved my point. If Dread had been available on all platforms, it would’ve sold a lot more.

@garvensman well, it sold a little over 100k during the remainder of 2022 (after its first 6 months on the market). With such a drop-off, you shouldn't expect a whole lot since.

As much as I hope prime 4 could sell a boatload I don’t think it would. Metroid as a genre has too much puzzle and thinking involved to appeal to general audience, or shooter bros. I don’t expect the expansion of audience for Prime games beyond its current niche.
Unless they do a breath of the wild moment, but I doubt so with the seen footage

Look man, I doubt Metroid Prime 4 will sell any worse than 3 mil. It seems to have Nintendo's whole backing into it and is on Nintendo's best-selling system. At worst it sells the same as dread or so and at best it sells double that.

So business as usual. Jokes aside, I don't think is the same hole Star Fox or F-Zero are in where many of the games didn't sell well along with having no studio to work on them at all. I believe we will still have Metroid Prime games in the future, they will simply be on hiatus while Retro focuses on making new DK or something.

Endlessly mixing up the gameplay, long wait times between games since post command, missing out on both Nintendo's big home consoles, and being mostly released on the lower selling ones only ones apart from the SNES and DS games.
Yes wait until Nintendo blows the lid on Prime 4 and we get a full blown Switch 2 trailer of Samus spider balling all over the place in new environments, grapple beaming and using new visor abilities vs enemies and puzzles.... boss battles.... chozo... the return of Ridley... and maybe even the Gunship comes into play more... we've seen NOTHING! Point 1 % of the game...

While I’d love more unrestricted Prime mechanics such as Spider Ball, Screw Attack and grapple innovations, I just hope Prime 4 can improve its environments.
As it is, Prime 4’s preview just shows unedited footage of a real life moon and a much larger Tallon Overworld, but lacks much of its own unique flair with the Federation Outpost being just rocks with Prime 3’s spaceship designs.
Prime Remastered features lots of large, bright coloured sci-fi lights to balance the machinery of the Frigate and Phazon Mines, for instance.
Prime 2 puts a unique twist on tech environments with the red, green and blue of the Luminoth facilities, and Prime 3 plays heavily with the Phazon and Federation blue lights and hues.
I know, we’ve only seen a glimpse, but still my biggest concern.
I think another thing is that if Prime 4 does have a fleshed out multiplayer, then it could really capitalize on a market with really no other competitors on any other platform. Halo is not doing very good at all with pretty much most support for Infinite being cut from the devs, and we are probably not getting another mainline Halo game for another few years at the earliest. There are really no other sci fi first person multiplayer shooters out there currently and Metroid will probably throw its own spin on it making it even more enticing for people even on other platforms.
It's not Gona make 2 mil profit, but it's going to be profitable. 1.5 mill maybe, but that's fine MP5 & 6 will make more. It will grow...
Unpopular opinion: The 2D Metroid games are superior
I actually don’t think that’s too hot of take these days among Metroid fans, especially since the most recent entries are 2D, with Dread being a lot of people’s entry point into the series
@@VerbeekTruther Yeah, I think because you can play more of the 2D games on the Switch than the 3D games that may be less of a hot take. But if you said that in 2010 people would just roll their eyes. I think Dread was a great reminder of what makes the 2D games amazing. I also think that the prominence of speed runners for Super Metroid helps keep 2D the thing people have the most nostalgia for.
I just think about how good Samus Returns and Dread were and something like Fusion and just find them to be more compelling than the Prime franchise. Not that it's bad, just that the flow in the 2D games is much more satisfying 👌🏼

My take: The Prime series and the classic series are equally great, but for almost entirely different reasons. I love both.

They need to make the graphics not suck. From what I saw in the preview, they should have made a vacuum cleaner instead, because they effectively suck.
