The reason they can be heard is because the Colosseum was an amphitheater, meaning that it was designed specifically with the acoustics in mind. You could stand down in the middle and people could hear you up at the top because the sound kept traveling upward along the angle of the seats. An amphitheater is basically two ancient theaters put together and ancient theaters were known for their acoustics. That is why theaters today are still designed that way.
Not Vikings. Rome was fighting the Barbarian Germanic tribes to their north. Vikings didn't come on the scene until some 700 (give or take) years later.
@@ActosRyarks9232 Yes the tribes in the movie were germanics but not vikings , oh what a sin, calling them vikings, vikings were germanics, you know that right?. It was just history ignorance.

FUN FACTS: the character of Maximus is fictional, however some the other characters around him are based on real people. The real life Lucilla(the sister) really did attempt to assassinate the real Commodus with the help of a few senators, but they failed. Lucilla & the other conspirators were exiled, then excuted shortly after. Also, the real Lucilla was the one who had an incestuous infatuation, not Commodus. The real life Commodus was strangled to death while bathing
Historywise you could dissect every frame and every line in the movie and find something wrong with it. It's a fantasy based on Roman Empire, the historical accuracy had 0 priority when they were making this.
Lucuis told Maximum his father died and the mother told Maximus his father died Commodus was not his father. You can tell Commodus wants her but she did not want Commodus. Joaquin Phoenix does have a cleft lip you can see it in every movie he is in.
That line about "bring them death, and they'll love him fo it", really makes you wonder what's going on when we're bombarded by entertainment 24/7. "bread and circus", indeed.
Young people see Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix as the two big stars in this movie (and they were) but way before they came along, actors, Oliver Reed (Proximo) and particularly Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius) ruled the movie scene along with other famous old school actors.
Oh hell yea I hated and still hate his character the most that shows how great Joaquin played the role and he took the Heath leadger/Denzel Washington approach of fully embracing the character
I seen Gladiator on HBO when I was 16 on vacation in Kissimmee Florida so I did not pay attention at all so I'm bout get it in now so I can watch the new one 😂
Yes, totally! The Geromé-painting was always on my mind as well when watching this one, and with the second movie it’s even more confirmed: the (fictional) helmet that is featured in that painting is in the movie (I think the guy on the rhinoceros, if I remember correctly. It’s interesting though: during the eighteenth century there was a German historian called Winckelmann who actually reintroduced a love and importance for the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. He did a lot of good things, but also really exaggerated their importance as an ideal to strive for. Artists and general society embraced that idea, which is why someone like Geromé - about 75 years later - was painting these highly fantasized idealistic paintings of gladiators in ancient Rome. (have a look at them, they might as well have been Frank Frazetta-paintings, it’s really cool, especially for that time). All of that is why the helmet stands out: it’s a fantasy, a fiction. Not to say it’s nonsense, but it is the ‘cinematic’ version of a piece of real history. And our current views of the Roman empire, the Greeks, etc. is still very much that view, as if it is the ideal, the ‘start of western civilizations’. In part, it was, but a lot of noise and exaggeration crept into it, only enlarged further by movies.
Proximus was played by Oliver Read. A British actor & legend. Sadly he died whilst filming this movie, which meant they had to reshoot some of the scenes towards the end of the film.
The composer is the glorious Hans Zimmer! My favorite of them all and this is arguably one of his best works, imo. I just saw him live this past September. It was magical. Gladiator came out BEFORE the Pirate movies, so if anything, Pirates is the one influenced by Gladiator. They definitely have some similarities. Also, Hans did not compose the first Pirates movie; that one was done by Klaus Badelt. Hans DID compose the 2nd and 3rd films, though, and worked collaboratively with another composer for the 4th. He did not compose the 5th film at all.
This film has much in common with a 60s film The Fall of the Roman Empire. Did you see the film crew in the crowd during the "Are you not entertained" scene? Left-hand side - blue jeans and white t-shirt with the tripod.
If you guys enjoyed this I highly recommend looking at Spartacus which was on Starz network. It was a really good show! I recommend starting first though with the prequel and then go into the series. This prequel Gods of the Arena will set you up and explain a lot of stuff and then you'll be able to understand the series a lot better.
You can't really though as the opening scenes spoil what happens at the end of the first season. if it wasn't for that scene then yeah it'd be perfect.
@Land967 oops my bad! Thanks for posting this. It's been a long time since I've seen Spartacus and gods of war. I just remember gods of War being really good.
historical inaccuracy: Spain wasn’t a country yet and won’t be several hundred years later. the name “Spaniard” just makes it easier to identify the location maximus lives in
The name "spaniard" was given to Maximus because that is the land where he is from and where his wife and kid were living. The land was called "Hispania", that's how the Romans named those territories in modern day Spain and Portugal. The country of Spain got its name from the Romans basically.
Not really an inaccuracy. I would say Spaniard would be an accurate English translation for someone from Hispania. More like an inconsistency being that Germany is referred to as Germania.
Gladiators in reality very rarely fought to the death; they were far too expensive to train. One of the causes of the Slave revolt led by Spartacus was likely because some rich Roman asshole called Crassus forced some to fight to the death. Where death was involved it was usually because some people were to be executed so they were sent into the arena to fight trained gladiators. kerk
Yo Syntell ik you watched Game of Thrones cuz I watched it with you. The armorer on this is the same historian who did the armor in later season of game of thrones. This was just a spot on his resume.
I absolutely love this movie. It's easily one of my top 5 all time favorites and I can't say enough good things about it. II is horrible. HORRRRRIBLE. The story is boring and unimaginative. Denzel is ridiculously awful. He sounds like a modern day NYer transported back in time. Evidently he thinks he's too good to do a time period/regional accent. The other actors make you wish you were blind and deaf. There's so much bad CGI that it reminded me of a cheap B movie you see on the SYFY channel. Save your money and your time.
I think they would have burned his Pa, Ma, Granny, cousins, uncles, aunts, if they knew them. So that nobody could come back with any kind of claim later.
Hans Zimmer did the music for both this and the first Pirates, but this movie predates Pirates so the director probably asked for similar music to this.
I think y’all were way too harsh on Lucilla from beginning to end. She’s not a snake. And how can you really hold a grudge against her when you saw how her life and her son’s life were threatened?! Who would have made a different choice with their only child’s life at stake? Not most.
