Love the 12-20. Very commonly found in their natural habitat in the Village during the folk scare of the 60's. Brings back many memories.

I got to play one of these at a local shop. I think it was a 1972 or 73. It was amazing. Not that I have a ton of experience with 12 strings. I have a Michael Kelly and I’ve tried a handful of others. But this thing was the easiest one I’ve played. Probably easier than most 6 string acoustics I’ve played.

If you are tempted folks DO check the neck/action first. When well set up they (have a D12-28) are great BUT Martin themselves said (in an email) they think any of their 12's from the 70's will very likely need a neck reset and the post 80's ones do have an adjustable truss rod - the earlier ones like this have a fixed reinforcement which when everything else is OK is fine but otherwise is a fair chunk of $ to get fixed or adjusted since the fingerboard has to come off to get at it.

Unboxing a new D-12-20 in 1971, surprise, silk and steel strings from the factory. Bronze strings are pretty harsh. Silk and steel makes this guitar sound like a choir of heavenly angels.
I own a 69 D12-20, are you saying they shipped from the Martin factory with silk and steel strings? I can't find any confirmation of this online.
Mine came from factory with silk n steel November 1970....
Love my 1966. Tune it down to D most of the time

At 6:00 et seq, you can see the white glue from the neck reset. The luthier should have spent a few seconds with a wet rag when it was glued.
Whole lotta love here for 12 fret acoustics.....the longer body sounds so full & balanced. The shorter neck should withstand the string pull of all those strings too. IMHO.....12 frets rule....I sold all my 14 fret acoustics.....don’t want any cut aways either

Modern electronic tuners make it not too bad.

When you're doing your barre chords on the 12-string, do you put your middle finger over your index finger just to get it out of the way, or to be able to apply more pressure to depress the greater number of strings?

I have a 1967 that I would never let go unless my son wants it. Pick guard had to go because it curled. It’s a bitch to tune but well worth it.

Is it a golden rule that every 12 string has to be strung with the low strings having the thicker string on bottom and light on top? Wonder what it'd sound like strung with heavy string on top...Great flat top. Thx, Mark...
