- On the 19th May 1536, with the swing of an executioner’s sword, one of the most iconic women in English History lost her head within the walls of the Tower of London. Anne Boleyn is seen by many as a woman who would wreck the marriage of Henry VIII to get what she wanted, but she would herself fall sharply from grace. Anne would frustrate Henry with her inability to give the son his greatest wish, a son or a male heir to follow Henry on the throne. But this lack of male heir forced the King to look elsewhere and he began to see Jane Seymour, one of Anne’s ladies in waiting and this was an open secret. But Henry then forced Anne out of the royal apartments and moved Jane in, and Anne’s downfall was signalled with her being imprisoned in the Tower of London and charged with adultery and treason. But her execution resulted in a bloody chapter of English history being over, but Anne left behind a daughter whom the King her husband was incredibly fond of. Despite Henry never getting the incredibly strong Tudor King he wanted, as his heir and son would die at a young age, he would get this brilliant successor and Queen in the form of Anne Boleyn’s daughter, Elizabeth who would become Queen Elizabeth I. But when the axe fell upon Anne, Elizabeth was left without a mother despite being just two years old at the time. But what happened when the young princess was told of this news?
What a beast Henry was. He could have exiled her with Elizabeth and spared her life. He was an evil man.
Although I agree he was a beast, didn't her (unjust) death allow him more freedom as a "widower" to marry?
He didn't even let Mary visit Catherine of Aragon when she was on her death bed. He was a hard hearted man.

He still had the perfect hostage, Elizabeth. Anne knew he was ruthless enough to make sure the tot died an unfortunate death from neglect if she dared say an unkind word at her execution. Also, it was a way to prove, hey, I am a rational, sane and good woman… unlike how I have been presented to the public.

Elizabeth I perhaps didn’t marry to keep her absolute power but learning the fact that her father killed her mother probably helped her to make that decision, too.
This has been in debate for centuries.
Elizabeth has been quoted as saying, "my dogs will wear my collars." She knew if she married, she may be the face of the monarchy, but her husband would rule.
Mary and Lady Jane Gray were also examples for her. Mary had a husband who married her only for politics, and while she loved him dearly, he couldn't have cared less about her and stopped doing his marital duty so she could not have a child (which, honestly, she was probably too old for by the time she married). Lady Jane's husband and in-laws (and her parents, to a slightly lesser degree) got her beheaded. Add in her mother and father's tumultuous relationship and you have a young woman who was wise to second-guess marriage.
I think it boils down to two possibilities: A) she could very well have been a lesbian. B) There wouldn't have been many protestant men around the European courts (Or english courts for that matter) of the sufficient status to be eligible to marry a Queen. Monarchs generally didn't marry for love, they married for politics.
I dunno man. She got on well with her father and was very like him. She viewed the sovereigns' decision as just, and she herself executed 83,000 people. She was very vain about her appearance, too. I think she was just a mini Henry, if im honest. Not like she herself didn't execute men she had emotional affairs with. The apple didn't fall too far from the tree. She Henry's daughter, besides her skin and hair colour she even looked more like a Tudor too. I believe her main reason not to marry was not to share power. That was it. She entertained the idea of marriage and clearly had strong emotional connections and crushes on men. She didn't know Anne at all, Henry was her only parent. It's nice she treated her maternal family well ... Well, she didn't like Lettice ....
THE ultimate FU AND slap in his face was that Elizabeth, out of all his children, was the greatest monarch. Elizabeth's name is more celebrated than Henry's ever was. I am happy she was a strong leader that proved a woman could rein

Probably. I tend to agree with the theory that Henry VIII (or his inner circle) got the skilled swordsman to make Anne's death as quick & clean as possible (& least likely to be botched with multiple agonising attempts, à la Margaret Pole), because he (they) knew Anne was not guilty, but he (they) still had to get rid of her.
So, yeah, Elizabeth probably reminded Henry and made him feel guilty (or angry with the people who convinced him), thus she was kept away or the guilt was shifted back to Anne & taken out on Elizabeth. 🤔
Henry was a narcissist. He would never have accepted any responsibility for her death, nor had remorse. In a narc's eyes, she would have remained guilty.

Way too many courtiers, along with how large her household was would have made it very difficult to sneak around. She was not as young and naive as Kathryn Howard, nor was Anne stupid. Henry needed to dispose of her as he feared Anne would not produce a male heir.
It's amazing that records of Elizabeth's governess begging Cromwell for clothes for young Elizabeth survived.
Sometimes the truth comes out in spite of every attempt to suppress it.
It’s disgusting that Henry did not make arrangements for his daughter. Even if he did not want to see her the least he could do was make sure she had money set assume for her and make sure she had living conditions befitting the daughter of a king

The real Anne would never have said this at all. In reality, she was terrified of what her daughter's fate might turn out to be. So terrified she was that she implored her chaplain, Matthew Parker, to look after Elizabeth should anything happen. Anne had good reason to worry: she knew Henry already had his sights set on Jane Seymour and marriage to her was all but certain. Anne had witnessed firsthand Henry's poor treatment of his daughter with Katherine, Mary, after ditching Katherine for Anne. It wouldn't be a stretch to presume that Elizabeth would soon receive the same poor treatment. Anne could never have dreamed that Elizabeth would one day be reinstated to the line of succession, much less eventually become Queen of England. For all Anne knew, Elizabeth would remain an illegitimate bastard (as Henry had declared his marriage to Anne invalid) tossed to the side and forgotten about, her marriage prospects not great due to her bastard status.

This is also why Elizabeth stated that she had a feeling that she wouldn’t marry since 8 because that was the age she had witnessed poor Katherine Howard being dragged away and wailing for mercy.

It breaks my heart to think of Anne being completely powerless, knowing she was going to die and leave her defenseless toddler all alone with almost zero protection. She had to know her daughter would not be told stories about her, would rarely see her likeness, and the legacy she was leaving behind was tainted. I could not imagine.
I can not help but wonder how great a queen Mary may have been if only her father had been kind and loving and supportive of her.
There would have still been the issues with the churches. That caused derision and Catholics back then were not understanding or very accepting of other religions.
Plus he treated Elizabeth even worse than Mary, if possible, and Elizabeth seemed to come into adulthood with a kinder and more open minded outlook on others.

Nah, Mary was too extreme in her religious beliefs so was always going to rub many people the wrong way. Elizabeth however, was moderate in her convictions which allowed her the fluidity to navigate conflicts more effectively

She likely would've been as 'normal' a religious ruler as the previous generations. 'Bloody' Mary gets a reputation that applied just as easily to Henry, but because Henry's religion stuck and Mary's didn't, she's the "extremist."
Now that we know through science that a baby's gender is based on their father's genes, it makes me so sad that women were blamed for not being able to conceive a son. Anne bore the burden of Henry's inability to produce an heir and lost her life for it
Henry was a serial killer who doesn't deserve to be acknowledged. The sad part of poor Anne Boleyn was, it wasn't her fault she didn't give Henry a son, it was his fault. Worse, historians speculate that Henry probably had syphilis, which is why so many of his children died as stillbirths or shortly after birth.

I'll never comprehend the psychi behind Jane not being freaked out that Henry killed Anne. How does a human being not become effected by such a thing, EVEN IF SHE HATED ANNE'S story in history. It's hard to understand how ANY of the people of this time period accepted all of these murders...but a woman, I can't.

Sure, but the king (any king, not just Henry VIII) had courtiers and political enemies executed on a fairly regular basis. As far as Jane Seymour was concerned, this wasn't much different than business as usual in the royal court.
Jane probably didn't think Henry was going to EDUCATE Anne, there was no precedent for a QUEEN being executed in Europe before the Tudors executed four. Hec, the entire Tudor line was a result of a Queen's affair and she was simply put on house arrest, not executed. Jane probably just thought Anne was going to be put away like Catherine of Aragon. Besides a man willing to execute his wife, father figure (Thomas Wosley), best friend (Thomas Moore), and threatening to kill his daughter is not the man to suddenly break up with. Besides, Catherine Parr tried to refuse Henry's proposal, but got her rejection rejected. Could have been the same for Jane for all we know.

It always amazes me that she would say such nice things about the man ordering her death. At no other time would it be possible to say what a terrible person henry was.
I think she knew whatever she said would reflect on how her daughter was treated, if she trashed talked him god knows what henry would’ve done to Elizabeth, she had to play along so her daughter would live a somewhat decent life.
I have always felt that Anne would have given Henry a son if he had just waited allowed her to have more children.
No, I don't think she would have. I suspect she could have been Rh negative, meaning after her successful pregnancy with Elizabeth, her body would have built up antibodies to destroy other fetuses

alixena9340 • I read years ago that she got pregnant with a second child, a male. Her enemies at court feared that, so they sent a messenger to tell her the king "had fallen at jousting." She jumped to her feet and fainted. Falling on the stone floor caused a miscarriage. Henry was of course fine, but he never gave her a chance to have another child after the miscarriage. Imagine how different history would have been if she had given birth to that little prince.

Henry was more rabid dog than man , not only in his dealings with his wives , but also his officials suffered . He murdered Cardinal Wolsey , then Cromwell and many more actually . He had more than 50 000 people murdered .
I believe it was more like over 70,000 people he had killed. Henry was a medieval serial killer.

In Tudor times the top secular class of the society was nobility. Nobility was divided into royalty and commoners. Unless one belonged to the royal lineage, they were commoners. The Boleyn family were commoners. Another famous commoner queen of England was Elizabeth Woodville, Henry’s grandmother in his mother’s side. Unless they were from a royal family and had royal blood, they were considered commoners. Royalty and commoners were to be executed by an axe. Everyone else was to be hung.

There's absolutely no evidence that Anne was guilty of the crimes she's accused of. Her only 'crime' - if you can call it that - was not giving Henry VIII a son & heir.
Its impossible for her to have slept any of the men she is accused of. As a Queen she was *NEVER* left alone at any time. Even when she was going to the toilet or asleep someone was with her.
It was protocol for a Queen to be accompanied by at least 1 attendant at any given time. The *ONLY* time she wouldn't have had an attendant with her. Is if she was in bed with the King.
& if she had gone around behind the Kings back with other men. Then some of her attendants would have known about it. & they too would have been accused & executed for their complicity in the affair(s).

Anne Boleyn was responsible for the deaths of many men. She didn't care and she regretted none of it. She wanted to be Queen. She conspired with and encouraged Henry to treat Katherine of Aragon in an appalling way. Don't waste your pity on her. She just got treated in the same way she treated others.
He abandoned his wife, his daughter, his faith for his obsesión for a mail heir. The Tudor dynasty was a frail one. In the British history there was never a Queen that reign by her own right. Only Matilda and she wasn’t allowed. She had ti share her crown. Mary was not the heir wanted. It must be a boy. Anne promised him that boy. And he destroy Catherine and the Catholic Church for that promise. In January finally Catherine died. Anne was pregnant with the promised heir. They dressed in yellow and dance all night long. Then, he had bad fall in a jousting game that was unconscious for two hours. And Anne thinking him dead, had a miscarriage. That was the end of Anne. Now, with the same passion he pursued her, he wanted to vanquish her. So she was to be executed, but for some inexplicable reason, not by the awful axe, but for the merciful sword. One last token of love? Or a guilty conscience knowing her to be innocent. This great woman, mother of a Queen was put in an arrow box and taken from the scaffold to the Chapel just a hundred meters away. And she is in there still. Elizabeth never mention her in public, but she always wore a ring with both her face and her mother engraved in it.

She could have told people who would listen that the king was the one who had the fertility problem.
He would never have allowed that.
Syphilis was prevalent in the early century and it's symptoms were not widely known. This is one of the complications that could have caused problems.
The king didn't want anyone to find out this as he loved the image of himself he had created.
I really doubt she would've done that, even if it were true and she knew it. Anne Boleyn was many things, but stupid wasn't one of them; spreading rumors indicating that she'd never be able to have his child while simultaneously insulting his ego and masculinity would've been incredibly stupid of her.
Henry's medical team would have been able to identify syphilis, not successfully to treat it, mind you, but identify.
When she would have done this, Henry would have killed Anne's whole family, including Elizabeth. Anne wasn't dumb, she protected them.
They were very aware of the symptoms of syphilis in his time and the syphilis rumor has been debunked. Check out a book called "Blood Will Tell" by, I think Kyra C. Kramer to find out a more reasonable alternative. d

Normally I think it's just nature- but in Henry's case, I truly believe god/universe was punishing him by denying, then killing off the only male heir he had. All they did back then was kill (so called heretics) and carry out ego wishes.

Except Katherine wasn't killed; she died of cancer.
Anne Boleyne was not a victim nor an adultress but a ruthless and effective poltician who was feared and respected by her peers and foreign powers as such. She ruled in a high-risk and violent society, and many others in her position before her died in war, coup or assination. It was the risk every monarch took.
England has been blessed to have had two Great Queen Elizabeths in the past.
Unfortunately after Elizabeth I's passing fights for power resumed and even a republican government was declared during chaotic years. Will that happen again?...

If only Mary had been given half of the love Elizabeth was, even after Anne's death, she could've been better than her sister. Everyone felt bad for Elizabeth because her mother was executed but at least she was truly loved by Henry before, whereas Catherine of Aragon was cast aside.
I'm going even farther to say Henry did not truly care about Edward he was simply a tool to Henry to further the dynasty or whatever it was called back then.

If she had not become petulent when Henry lost interest in her for not giving him a son, she might have lived. Ambition had brought her to the throne at the expense of poor Queen Catherine. And Anne treated her terribly. Upon Henry's orders to Cromwell to help him get rid of Anne, Cromwell set about framing her for adultery and for lying about not being pure when she married Henry. Cromwell's tears at her execution were for himself.
If Anne had played it smart like the future Queen Anne of Cleves and granted Henry a divorce before Cromwell investigated her, she might have lived. These were brutal times and Henry was exceptionally brutal. It's a cautionary tale of how to survive a brutal absolute monarch.
Her mother didn't " lose her head"... It's not like It was her purse...she knew where her head was ..she was executed by beheading.

I do agree with you, that Ann's family wud have persuaded her into being with Henry even if she wud have been relactent to do so, because the Boleyn's were an ambitious family. However, I feel like Ann was also not innocent coz she led Henry on. Henry just wanted Ann as his mistress at first, just like her sister Mary, but because of her ambitiousness, she insisted Henry to marry her, which left him with no choice but to divorce his wife, coz of his desires for her. Am not saying Henry was right for what he did, but the point is, had Ann just went along with being a mistress and enjoyed the expensive gifts that Henry showed her with, her life wud have been spared. At the same time, her fate was not in vein coz she produced one of the greatest mornaches during the Tudor era, her daughter.

First of all, every historical program will struggle to find enough when it comes to portraits. Understandable. Not all the art is labeled, and not all Roman busts of a balding guy are Caesar. Many artists just suck, especially compared to Holbein. It's very likely the best paintings of Anne Boleyn and many others were duly burned in fireplaces throughout the kingdom. *'sigh'*

Idk if it’s just me but if I were Ann, I might have went out calling Henry a tyrant and who can trust a man who would kill their own wife and toss aside so easily their first. She had to be thinking about her daughter so I understand why she didn’t.
Henry was an ogre. I dont understand how a so-called 'handsome young prince' ended up as a disgusting tub of lard whose cruelty knew no bounds. He was desperate for a son, but Elizabeth was a stronger monarch than he could ever have envisaged.
At 1:52, there's a pictures of Anne Boleyn, but her eyes look crossed. Is this a copy of a previous image of her? I remember seeing the painting, but don't remember her eyes looking - not right.
True! I think that's just a terrible painting. There's another one looks like the artist was visually impaired and working with a prosthetic hand.
It's my understanding that all the portraits of Anne were destroyed after her beheading. Henry ordered this and the only painted images there are now were done after her death from memory I suppose. There was an original image done before her death on a coin I think.
