As a side, I took up piano at 65 and now I'm over 70. All the physical activities that I used to do I really can't do anymore and really don't have the strength. Playing the piano on the other hand is something I can do for hours if I want and I get the same satisfaction...in fact, more. My regret is that I didn't take it up sooner. Stick with it Kaitlyn...you'll never regret it.
this comment gives me motivation as well. i was practicing for 1-2 hours very often, and all of a sudden i lost the motivation, and i really want to get back in to it. and hearing you say that you regret you didn`t start earlier makes me think what i will thing in many years if i didn`t pick it up again
I gave up piano 20 years ago. Then one day during lockdown I started practising with a simple and cheap electric keyboard which I bought and never used. I found Lisa and I liked her style so simple, fun and easy. and I started enjoying playing. I upgraded to a digital piano and made such a difference. I played one of Lisa tutorials called beautiful and emotional and people loved it. Since then I played everyday, playing the piano gives pleasure to you and to your family and friends. It worth the effort and is never too late:)
This was me before. The reason why I started learning the piano is for me to be able to play it at church and play songs in general however a few months into it I felt frustrated. Problem is I wanted a shortcut and so I ended up stopping but wonderful things take patience and time. Thankfully, got motivated after a couple of weeks just thinking of the reason why I started it at the first place... I still have a long way to go but now I'm proud to say I can play songs so long as I have the chords(which I just Google) I'm telling you guys it's okay to maybe take a break if you feel overwhelmed but don't stop completely. The piano is such a beautiful instrument and I'd say being able to play it is worth all my minutes/hours of learning the keys, major scale, chords, chord inversions and finger practicing. Let's keep going, we can do this!💪
Lisa you are the best !! I was really stuck .. its been almost 2 years since i stopped and i was stuck i did not know where to start, my fingers were struggling to move across and seeing this video has motivated me .. thank you So much Lisa and Pianote😍😍
I like that you don't run from the fact that piano players sometimes want to stop. You addressed it and went back to the reason you wanted to start............... great job!
I was so excited to watch her development when she started to see in real time how much time it takes you to get real good and now I find out she stoped playing 😭
If I had a music teacher with your enthusiasm and personality I wouldn’t have stopped playing over two years ago. You must be an absolute joy to be around. God bless your heart and those you love.
First I want to say thank you for this video and all of this channel's work. I'm grateful for it. But I am commenting because this came at a time where I really need encouragement. You are a blessing and an amazing teacher. I hope to get back on track today. Thank you for reminding me to "be positive with myself".
Had a 4-year-old break my casino piano, the only thing I was glad it was not plugged in at the time. That was great hearing a student coming back to music after stopping for an extended period. Lovely vocals that really multitasking, you using the sustain pedal while your student plays the notes. Well done to both of you. Miss playing the piano myself, had to stop because my nephew broke the piano. Now he is old I am thinking of purchasing a new one.
Kaitlyn is doing fantastic. I am starting out at age 66. Don't worry about mistakes I have found that when I am not judging myself but really concentrating on what I am playing I make less mistakes. Hopefully that helps you. Your playing is amazing keep at it! Your friend from Southeast Michigan.
Lisa, thank you for your many great tips in learning to play the piano. I like your boot camp video on playing cords. I practice playing that all the time when I need to take a break from learning a new song.
Keep at it, Katy. You are doing well. You are lucky to have Lisa as your piano teacher. I haven't been practicing as I should. I mainly just have been playing the same left-hand piano patterns that I learned a couple of months ago. At least I haven't forgotten how to do those. I now am going to practice my chord inversions 10 minutes a day. Wish me luck!
I stopped for 16 years and never regretted it thinking I have stopped permanently. Then got back into it during lock down replaying my old peieces. I still play a bit I do get some days when I have know desire to play. At the moment I need a break from it as I am becoming frustrated again
End on a high note, I just ended on invertions for cup song. I'm blowing my own mind with the tools you're sharing, this was in me, goodness. I love Jesus.
Hi, i'm always watching your videos because i find your tutorials easy to follow. I'm just a beginner and i really desire to play a good song specially when i am alone and wanted to sing a song to God. Thank you and looking forward for more tips and additional tutorials to improve more my piano playing.
Hello, I'm from Malaysia and I had already achieved my Grade 8 cert two years ago but i was always embarrassed to admit it because I feel like I dont have any musicality and all I know is to read the script and play whatever it is written on it. Thank you so much for all these lessons and making me gain back the driving force to learn piano and really play around with music. Really grateful ❤️
I’ve met many classically trained pianist with this problem .. they can only read what the sheet says in front of them :/ Even one of my high school music appreciation teachers had this issue .. felt bad for the guy. I quit piano classes within a week when I was 8 and pursued playing by ear instead. I can now play pretty much any song I like :)
I SO needed to see this video. I started playing with gusto and then completely fell off, and have been finding it so hard to get re-motivated. I should have known the answer was just get back into Pianote! Thank you Lisa :-)
Great video Lisa! And keep it up Kaitlyn! You are doing great! As for me.....my desire to play piano is super high, but my musical talent and ability to learn new things are low. My biggest problem areas are accuracy(like left hand bass note to chord), rhythm, and hand independence. Kaitlyn, it looks to me that you can adapt quickly. Keep it up!
Love your UA-cam tutorials, they are amazing. Keep up the great work. Can you do a tutorial for Silver Threads Among the Gold, for beginners? I will be celebrating my 20th anniversary within the next year, and would love to play and sing this song to my wife. Thank you.
I think that quite a few people get impatient with themselves. They want to play but after they start learning, get discouraged at their rate of progress. I think kids have it easier. They can have fun at every level. Adult learners want to perform like artists they admire. I agree with the suggestions presented here. First, think about why you want to play. Play something you love but keep it simple. You can embellish later. Practice fundamentals even when not motivated. Fundamentals aren't really fun. But your hands and ears learn things that let you play more complex music, and that IS fun...
Since I have limited money and more importantly, limited space, I recently purchased the Roland Fp30 to study piano. My problem for the last week wasn't inspiration, it was a lack of electrical power for 7 days, here in Iowa. Thankfully it was restored, yesterday! That derecho storm was a real mess! Still more fallen trees to clean.
I'm struggling to go back to the piano mainly because I believe I have Tunnel Carpal and I'm so afraid to hurt myself. I've been really careful with my hands these past few months, just taking care of them and considering going to the doctor, but with all this pandemic stuff I don't know. I think I lost motivation but I still try practicing by singing and learning intervals and chords that way, at least it's entertaining.
I want to learn classical music im on my third day im practicing scales and reading sheet music later im gonna practice and learn rhythm and the metronome
This really helped motivate me. Thanks so much. I haven’t had much fun practicing lately and I was often too busy to play so this helped me soo much. I’m also working on a Disney song. I’m working on Reflection from Mulan.😄
Its funny how I came across this video at a time I'm stuck in a rut with guitar I sidelined my guitar to actually accomplish something on piano now that I have I cant find anything that inspires me to learn anything new on guitar. I'm in the middle of learning blackbird on piano because its impossible for me to finger pick it on guitar I think the last song I learned to play on guitar was Elton John's your song. Ya I'm a little ass backwards learning piano songs on guitar and guitar songs on piano. At this time I have no problem finding something that motivates me to learn songs on piano I'm going through all the stuff that physically impossible for me to learn on guitar and applying it to piano like blackbird by the Beatles or fire and rain by James taylor. If only I could think of something to motivate me back to my guitar
Hello. I am not stuck in a rut. I am trying to get to the point to find a rut. I am a beginning beginner... do you have any simple exercises to work on left hand -right hand coordination? (Harmony-Melody)
Hi Lisa. I have learned a lot and follow you every day. I know a lot of theory and all the chords and the inversion. I also play some songs so this technique can be used to play The blessing? By the way what exercises are good to acquire speed in playing songs with both hands. That my dream to continue in my worship room at home (singing/playing the piano) and then have confidence to go out, sit in a piano and bless others hearts. 🎹🎙❤️
Come on Kaitlyn, please don't give up. Your fan base here wants to see you going on. And, as Lisa correctly mentioned in the video, whenever you find yourself in trouble with motivation, then ask yourself about the "WHY". Why did you decide to start piano playing? Probably there was something that you thought you will get as a reward from playing piano. Look, I'm an old man still struggling to keep my both hands synchronized, but nevertheless, I'm practicing every day. Because my "WHY" is that this half hour of working on the 88 keys (as well as playing guitar and bass) disconnects me mentally from all the stress and pressure of the daily life. Its my way to recharge my "batteries" for the next day. I don't want to make a living from piano playing (probably they would rather pay me to stop torturing the piano), but it makes me relaxed and contributes a big part to my "work-life-balance". Maybe you had similar intentions when starting to play the piano, maybe you have other reasons. Whatever it is, don't worry, we all make mistakes and we usually treat them as an opportunity to grow. Best wishes from Germany, please take care and stay safe and healthy.
Hey Lisa I’ve Been following this channel for a long time and it has helped me a lot😊 I wanted to know something. When playing a song with the melody , how do I figure out the chords without trying unnecessary combinations since a note could be the root , a 3rd or a 5th. I also wanted to know in which situations do we use different kinds of chords. I’ve been relying on UA-cam a lot since i cant afford literally any lessons online or face to face ( although I’m really tempted to buy yours but I can’t afford it ). Any amount of free specific advice would be highly appreciated😊😃 if u want u can only answer the 1 st question because that’s what I want to know about. Although u made several videos about chord progressions honestly speaking it didn’t help me😅(sorry). Please do not ignore this comment 🙏🏻 if u do not want to give information for free, I definitely understand 😊 but at least reply.
Hey there! We actually have a video on how to match chords to a melody: ua-cam.com/video/SRSKjJSeVJw/v-deo.html Knowing what key signature the song is in will be a HUGE help - because that will give you a really good idea of what chords to expect. A metronome is simply a tool that keeps perfect time. You can set the tempo and it will click on the beat. It's super useful to use because it helps you develop your sense of rhythm and also helps you build your speed!

It's almost 2 years later and no more new player videos of Kaitlyn. She has, I assume, a free teacher, a beautiful piano, and great encouragement and yet she seems to have given up. What chance does an everyday person have? Maybe these music instruction channels that suggest anyone can play these instruments are not factual. Perhaps piano is not for everybody, nor music. I am an old new pianist and was inspired by these videos, now I am more discouraged than ever.
Life happened! With the pandemic, we weren't able to see each other as often as we would have liked, and Kaitlyn has things going on in her life as well! I'm honestly just so proud that she wants to keep learning and playing. And I hope it's an inspiration and encouragement to others who have stopped playing, for whatever reason.
