Welcome back! Moldy and rusty rods--this is a REAL welding channel!!! And older self-taught welder I knew (he made log splitters (fabbed up from mostly junkyard parts) and did tractor/farm implement repairs in his retirement used whatever he could make work. He didn't know squat about rod numbers but what he sorted out by trying them. I saw all sorts of odd rods in his "rod locker" (steel shelving in an uninsulated building). I'd ask about them, he'd tell me he found them. He was a pretty good welder and also did a lot of grinding and paint. He left school in the 8th grade and built houses (even my house) in his earlier days. I know he welded with some old nasty rods, and got the work done.
"Smelling what i'm stepping in" - man oh man. You helped me so damn much with your technique. I went and bought myself a new MIG machine in pure frustration. However, I see there's benefits for both now so I do not regret it. Thanks alot!
Im new to welding at 54yrs.old ! Iv taking a few classes and practice at home when i can. Your videos are fantastic! An really helpful and you keep it light and humorous. Glad your back ! Thanks again!
Thanks! I'm 73 and hated that I never learned to work metal. I bought a multi welder mig/stick/tight and a plasma cutter this Feb (birthday to myself). I can do some ugly work., but was pretty frustrated cause my stick kept getting stuck. I watched your flick thing, went outside and flicked away. Now I can start 6011, 7014 and probably all of them OK. Thanks again, great info. Love the channel. "Stickit"!!
Thank you, Mr. Paul! 73 and still going wide open, that’s pretty awesome! Let me know if you come up with any good video ideas. And keep me posted on your progress.
Hi Chris. Ive been retired a few years now and miss it like you would not believe. Im lovin your videos, they chill me out. Keep tellin it like it is. Thank you have an awesome awesome day
Love the channel!!! Been in the trades for 25 years and welding off and on for 16 years( more on than off lol). I had a couple of guys show me the ropes and am indebted to them. I wish there were videos like this when I started. You especially can explain the tips and tricks in a was to understand manner that a lot of guys can’t. Keep up the great videos brother and God Bless.
@@TaylorWelding oh wow. Our son and his family lost power just north of Nacogdoches for about 4 days. He said lots of trees down. They are good again. Best regards.
This is the kinda stuff us young guys need, I’ve been practicing just as you said but my issue is my arc just does not wanna stay lit. I’ll throw down a nasty slug but somewhere down the line it almost feels like my arc starts getting smaller and smaller until I stick it. Also I had no clue they made stingers like that, my class has stingers that look like a cows upper mouth from how worn they are.
Could be a bad batch of rods; or you’re using one of those Chinese inverter machines from Amazon. If you’re using a cheap Chinese inverter machine; buy one more, and connect them in series. Set them both at about the same setting, no need to be precise, this set up will give you enough open circuit voltage (OCV) to burn any rod out there, bad batch or not.
Thanks so much for the videos and tips. Being 70 and welding since I was 16 I always learn something new. Started out with stick in FFA High School Shop and being going ever since with stick. Not a professional as yourself but Im learning each time I watch you videos. Really like the ones on the saddles. Keep it up, even us old dogs learn new tricks from you. When can I get a Stubby rod holder? Been needing that for many years. Thanks again.
70 years old. That’s really cool. Most people quit. stubbyrodsaver.com should be up and running in a week, but I’ve been hearing the same thing for several weeks lol. We’re waiting on the website guy.
I think i just finished watching ALL of your videos, so much to learn out of all of them i might need to watch them again. Thanks for sharing, awesome content, cant wait for more. Also where do I get my hands on one of those stubbys. Mahalo!
The bare tip of the Stick is what makes it stick, Keep the stick at an angle and just slide it across the basemetal. Yes the Motion is like striking a match but the difference is that you dont apply pressure like striking a match.
So glad you’re back! Quick question, which video were you talking about what you eat for fitness? Thx again for sharing your knowledge and experience. Much appreciated.
How are you doing I have a test coming up and it’s a No Grind test on my 5g and branch could you do a video of how to burn out the slag/trash im already burning really hot and keeping it tight but still got wagon trails when I break my nick straps im on 4th gear and 75 running a classic 3 super hot
I am new to welding and I can use 2.5mm rods no problem and rarely stick but when I try 3.5mm rods I rarely don’t stick and just can’t seem to strike an arc! Going to try some new rods as both sizes will doubtless be a bit damp, though no issues with the 2.5’s. Are the larger ones more adversely affected by damp!?
I was always trying to use every inch of the rod, but at some point I just got frustrated and throw rods that messing with me. Better for the confident, because stickwelding (sporadically) is already hard enough. New rod, fresh start! the 13cts a rod is nothing.
Hey I had a thought, I don't get them often lol, but I wonder if that arcaptain would do better with a different brand of 6010. I used to hate 6013 till a friend in the UK told me about Esab brand Sureweld 6013. They do code pipe with 6013 over there. He said that's all they use is the Esab 6013. I tried some ordered from Amazon. He was right even uphill and overhead they run like butter on toast man almost as nice as Excalibur 7018. Man I couldn't believe it. So just a thought. God bless brother. Have a good'un.😃
Great show man ! You remind me of Billy Bob Thornton , similar features. Maybe your daddy met up with Billy-Bob's mom and they got drunk and had a wild night. L0L. Well , compliments from South Africa.
They call the tombstones buzz boxes up here. When I was new I once left it stuck so long the whole rod was red hot and soft like cooked spaghetti. Dont be like me folks.
The stubby is holding up great
I'm 69 years old and I've been welding on and off since High School on projects. I have still learned things from watching your videos. Thanks!!
