On the Aces High server we had three 90+ year old fighter pilots from the war. One served in JG 52; the other 2 were USN aviators who flew F4Us. One of them shot me down; I felt honored. After he shot down another one of us 'Kids' (18 to 60 yrs. old) came what he called the Hard Part... the Carrier landing. He nailed it; w/ the comment, "Just like riding a bicycle." Sweet. Baa Baa Black Sheep...read the book.
Been listening to this on a loop in the background while playing War Thunder. Perfect music for air combat. TY, to all the airmen who fought in WWII, including my grandpa.
I had an apartment in grad school that had a shitty AC that sounded like a Corsair firing up when it started... had a dream one morning that I was about to scramble with the 214!!!
As a kid growing up I knew a fifty year old Corsair pilot. Interesting story came of his Corsair after the war-it ended up on Taiwan and became part of the early Taiwanese air force.
My father being a Vietnam era marine and me growing up in the 80s. This was the only show we watched together. The rest of the shows were to bugs bunny for him. Except dukes of hazard. That made him laugh. Even black sheep show was exaggerated. He would remark how some of that crap was what pappy pulled. Like the presidents aid, posing few times as a general or admiral. He loved the Corsairs and island scenes. He would talk about the training and hang outs his unit went to and of course the fun he could talk to a kid about. The adult stuff later.
Calling it "historical" is a bit of a stretch. More like a TV show built around a historical time and place, emphasis on "TV show". I loved the show, of course, but I would have liked to have seen a lot more flying scenes and historical accuracy. "Band of Brothers", "The Pacific", "Flags of Our Fathers/Sands of Iwo Jima", etc. were much more focussed on historical accuracy.
No one ever made that claim. Read the video's description. It was just made for fun. An attempt to be "better" than anything or anyone was never made or intended. You didn't like it? That's okay. Some other people did and that makes me happy. Like the late, great Pancho Barnes said, "If you have a choice, choose happy."

Its probably out of print now but your local library may have it. The title is "Once They Were Eagles" and it was written by Maj Frank Walton who was the Intelligence Officer of VMF 214 and was there from the beginning and even helped select the Black Sheep name. He tells the true story of the squadron and not the version the Nothing But Crap network aired in the 70s. The tv show was absolute bullshit. If you can find the book its an interesting read.
LOL, that was asked 2 years ago. It's the only WW2 airfield that I had suitable for making a video. Let's say the backstory is that they were about to be overrun and he was destroying everything to prevent it from getting into enemy hands. Or something like that, I guess. Or just don't overthink it.
Also nice touch showing the plane bounce a little upon landing. The Corsair was suppose to be assigned to carrier operations but because it had a bad tendency to bounce upon landing the Navy decided it didn’t want it until the issue could be resolved so the Marines were equipped with it but eventually the problem was corrected and it went into service aboard U.S. Navy carriers.

My favorite WW2 airplane. I never missed an episode of Black Sheep when I was a kid.
I was a BIG fan of the show and watch it on my local TV channel as much as I can. RIP MR. Conrad
Sorry but Robert Conrad is NOT resting in peace. He’s probably drinking, brawling and just plain raising hell with the real pappy Boyington. 🤣😂😅

Wouldn't that be awesome?!?
Why not look for a DVD box set of the series?
The black sheep are back on H&I I’ve recorded all shows so far
I just mentioned that to someone in the comments before I saw yours. 😉

Of course it was bullshit, it was a TV show, but it was a fun TV show, and even Pappy endorsed it by making a few cameos.
Of course it was Hollywood. Other members of the 214 were not happy with the portrayal.
I had a neighbor who was the executive officer of this unit.

Wonderful music
Salute all black sheep
Thank you Pappy Boyington and I named a hero and you never proved that he was a bum
Oh yes I use to love watching the Black sheep in black and white
I did 2,I had a 135 scale model Corsair and took to liveing room and sat in front of TV mom knew what I was up to Tues night at 7pm.
Why are you strafing your own airfield?
cuz I was drunk, done with the war, and wanted to get court-marshaled ;-)
Well the JAG will see it exactly that way ... ;D

Uniquely American- the Corsair was John Wayne to the Spitfire's David Niven.

Can't use a birdcage Corsair?
Not without that model for the simulator, no, afraid not. Besides, Pappy's Corsair was a later model.
