Thanks for trying these for us.
My 96 yr old mother uses the smallest size for weaving the thin sock yarn ends & loves them.
I use the larger sizes for the variety of yarn thicknesses on my crochet projects, & use the sharp ends for splitting the ply, when weaving in the ends & weave the end in 3 different directions.
I have used these yarn finishing tools for a number of years & are my 1st choice for weaving ends into a project. However, I lay the yarn end over the current row, to overlap the yarn, then leave about 4", to weave in 3 different directions... especially with Granny Squares design.
Thank you! Yes, weaving in well enough to it stays is important! Your 96-year-old mother still does handwork, that is wonderful! 💗💗
Hi Tuula,
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I love the Susan Bates finishing needles. I saw another UA-cam channel use them and I had to buy some myself. So I ordered from Amazon and shipping was free but they lost my package somewhere between USA and Australia, so I ordered it again and received them. I absolutely love them, can’t live without them 😊
Take care and stay safe and well. God’s blessings 🙏🏽💗😻🐶🦋
Thank you, you too! 💗
💜🙏🏽😻🧶
I been using these for about 4 years now and I haven't used a darning needle since.❤
Wonderful!
Thank you I need to buy about 3 pks so I don't have to worry about them being hard to find. I broke one of course it's the one I used daily. They are great for hair dressers who weave in fake hair like myself, so I get lots of use out of mine. Everyone have a great day.
I have had these for almost a year and cannot do without them. They are a joy to use. I mostly use the smaller sizes on baby hats and fine yarn items. It makes weaving in a breeze and so much faster than tapestry needles. Great review.
Thank you! I'm happy I decided to get these!
I received my order from Amazon and immediately tried it out. Wow! I only had a small number of ends on my present project because I tried your recommended joining technique. No needle to thread, These glided through the stitches easily. Such a great find that I ignored for so long. Amazon has some knock offs but I stuck with the Bates product and I am pleased.
Wonderful! 💗💗
Very useful needle 🪡 👌 👍 to hide tail, and finishing of our crochet project , thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you so much 😊
These are my FAVORITE! I found them a few months ago and am absolutely obsessed! So easy!
Great to hear that others like them too!
Thank you so much for doing this review. I have been thinking of getting some of these, so it is good to have the opinion of an experienced crocheter. The thing that really attracts me to them is the ease with which they can weave in short ends.
Great! Yes, the short ends is what they mention in the product description especially but they seem to be good for sewing crochet or knitting in general!
Thanks for trying out the needles. Anything to make life easier🍀🌸😘
Exactly right!🙂
Thank you for reviewing these! I've always thought they were gimicky, but you seemed to have little issue working with them. As with most new things, there's an adjustment for the differences, but you mastered them in a short time.
The next time I'm at the craft store, I know what's going in my basket!
Great, yes, they are surprisingly easy to get used and I know I will actually use them!
Thank you for testing these and for your honest opinion. I'm in the US and I just bought a set but I i haven't used them yet. I can see where the smallest size is useful for the thinner yarn. Now, looking at your sample pieces, I'm inspired to try making a lace bunting for decorating my kitchen windows 😊
Great, yes, make a bunting to decorate your kitchen! 💗
I love these finishing needles. I don't put stress on the needle when pulling yarn threw. I hold both the yarn and needle at the same position and then pull the yarn threw. This protects putting too much stress on the needle, and I've never broken any of my needles. Unfortunately some users use them like metal needles and therefore they break.
I use these too. I love using - no struggling with a needle eye
Thank you, that sounds like the best way to use them - if they break, people may have been too rough with them!
Thank you Tuula for a wonderful video. I can't wait to buy them, I will go to Joann fabric here one of these days. Lately I am so tired after work that I have barely time to crochet. On weekends I make time to crochet as it is relaxing. I started a small blanket and later found out that it was not even so I had to undo everything. I will have to watch your video about the crochet ends straight.
Thank you! Hope youfind the needles and also get time to crochet! 😊
I sometimes used a "Big Eye beading needle" to finish works. They have the same shape - a needle that is just a big eye - but are made of metal, sharp pointed and flexible. And less expensive! You can find them in every shop that sells beads and components for beading. I will try those plastic ones if I can find them cheap, but... 7 dollars for 5 plastic needles? Nah. :D Thank you for the video! ^_^
Are u talking about USA or Europe? There are needles for making smth with glass beads , but they re very thin and i doubt they work for yarn. There re no other kind in Finland. In USA u go to Wallmart and there are all sorts of things. Not in Europe thou
Thank you! I have seen those metal ones in bead shops, I do some bead work. I'll go to ireland for October and I know I can get these needles there.
Yes, it varies a lot what you can get in different countries. Many Americans have been surprised that in Finland you can get a range of crochet hooks in any supermarket but then other things you don't get!
@@bambinaforever1402 I live in Italy. I bought my big eye needles online, some years ago, and I remember there were different sizes, at least two. Yes, they are thin, but you can open them for the entire lenght and insert your yarn, even if it is chunck. And maybe the yarn tends less to slip out, compared to the plastic ones.
Tuula, I brought these needles a few years back and forgot about them. Now that I have seen your demonstration results, I will be trying them out. Thanks!!!
Wonderful!
Thank you for this review! I'm going to look for these needles the next time I'm near a shop that sells them.
Great!c😊
These are a great idea. I especially like that they're good for short ends, because the metal needles with the hole at the top only, has its limits
If you have a short end, weave the needle first and leave it woven in. Then thread your needle and pull the yarn through.
Yes, I was happy to try these and will definitely use them!
True - I actually had that on the original video but cut it off, thinking it was getting too long!
I have brought them awhile ago but never got around using them until I saw your this video. After trying them out to weave in ends (especially ends with not much yarn) - I love it over a metal needle. I appreciate you, Tuula for your wonderful video!
Oh yes, these are what I referred to in my other answer, I'm going over comments starting from newer ones 😊 Thank you!
I bought these and when I went to use them, I thought what the heck ! LOL. THANKS for the demo. Now I know how to use them.
Oh great, yes they are easy to use!
If your end is very short, I thread the needle through the yarn first and then thread the needle. Easy peasy!
Yes, that's what I do too, I actually had that mentioned on the video but then I thought that it wasn't important so i cut it out!
@@TuulaMaaria You might consider adding it to a new video that you do. I found it to be a lifesaver!
Hello Miss Tuulaa.
IDAHO USA here.
I got some hard plastic knives and my wood burner and made my own right after I saw your video. Works GREAT!!
Think outside the box.
Thank you so much for showing them to me and giving me the idea on how to fabricate them!!
I hope others will use their imagination and not pay for these wonderful things. Take care. I hope people let you know how they made theirs. IDAHO USA
That is awesome! I would never have thought of making those myself!
My mind works in mysterious ways. LOL. IDAHO USA
Many thanks, a good review. Pennies are tight and good to know of a quality product.
Great! 😊
Thank you AGAIN Charming Tuula Maaria
for your insight and demonstration of this new helpful crochet tool that helps weave in the yarn ends. Wow❗️
I really am impressed, and I will be ordering these.
Thank you so much! Definitely, order some!
Hi, Tuula. Greetings from Brazil.
I watched your video and I went straight to Amazon Brazil to look for them. I got them with a discount, so I paid less than 7 dollars (the normal price is 8 dollars, as you said). And the delivery is free because I have Amazon Prime, I will receive them on 31/8 or 1/9.
I'm very happy about this tip!
Thank you so much ! ❤
Happy to hear, and great you are getting them for such a good price! 🙂
Thank you for demonstrating these needles for us! I've always ignored these, thinking they look fragile and cheap. I saw a tip a few years ago - dental floss threaders are a stronger version of the flimsy needle threaders. They are great for thread crochet & thin yarns - I have a lifetime supply. Then I saw wool needles - the metal needle with a plastic loop for the eye! Love these for dk & worsted weight yarns, but the needle part is bulky and the needles aren't very sharp. The loop on the small one broke several months ago! I will definitely be getting myself a pack of Susan Bates finishing needles - thanks to you!💕
Great! That tip about dental floss actually is great - you are right, it doesn't break!
Thank you for demonstrating these needles. I’m making a granny square afghan now, and even though I am using a method to weave in the ends of rows as I go, there are still two ends that need separate weaving in. I will definitely buy these!
Great! 🙂
I was taught to fold the yarn and the squeeze the folded end and it will go into the eye without splitting the yarn. N ever have a problem. However if using chunky yarn, these needles will come in handy.
Yes, that works with some yarns but it is still hard!
I am excited about these! what I really liked was the wonderful way to weave in the short ones❤
Yes, they are handy for that!
I have those, I love them, I use them all the time.
Great! 🙂
Oh my gosh I have a small end on my current project and I was so scared I couldn't weave it in I'm gonna search hobby lobby for these! Great review 👍
Thank you, hope you find some!
That looked so practical, I actually ordered a package of these, too. Thanks!
Oh great, hope you will like them too!
Thank you for this review. I am a beginning crocheter and learned so much watching you weave in ends!
Lovely!
Not seen these before, I’m impressed, lovely review. Thank you x
Not long since I first saw these!
Thanks for giving these a “test drive” for us. Now aI know this is a product I’d like to try. And I won’t have to pay shipping. Hope these become available in Finland soon!
Thank you! Yes, I really should tip one of the larger crafts stores about these!
Thank you. This was quite helpful! Enjoyed watching the sample work you did to show how they worked. ❤
Lovely, thank you!
I’ve used these for years they’re my favorite
That's good, so they do work on the long run!
Really good review. Thank yo for sharing it. I usually thread my needles by using a small piece of stiff paper folded in half. I place the yarn end in the folded end of the paper and pop the unfolded ends through the needle eye and pull. Hey presto, needle is threaded !
Thank you, I need to try that! 🙂
I have some of these, to use when i have short tails.
Have you tried the Clover brand yarn threader, to help thread yarn onto needles? They are much sturdier than yarn threaders meant for sewing thread. They work great. I’m in US and happy to mail one to you, if you wanted to try but had the ridiculous shipping again.
Thank you for the tip, I don't think I have seen threader like that. But Clover is widely sold here so i can check. Thank you so much that you could mail one to me!
I like to use susan bates crooked needles to sew in my ends for my amigurumi. I might break plastic needles as my stitches are tight.
I saw those crooked needles when i was looking for these!
Thank you very much for this review Tuula! I went ahead and bought these from Amazon. Can't wait to use them now! 😊
Great you got them, hope you will enoy using them!
I have these in my Amazon cart so I’m so glad you tried them out for us! I will now purchase them! Thank you!
That's great! 🙂
I'm in the US and they are easy to obtain but I thought them a useless gimmick. However, I like the way they handled the fingering yarn. Thanks for the demonstration.
Thank you! They would seem to be a good idea!
This is interesting. I had not seen those needle type before. Awesome for short ends! Thanks for sharing 🎉❤
Yes, they are handy 🙂
Thanks. I can possibly use them for other projects too! Thanks for showing this.
Wonderful!
There are also some yarn needles shaped like a small knitting needle with a plastic loop on the end which makes threading them so easy, but wouldn’t work any better than a tapestry needle for short ends. I use all 3 methods depending on what I am doing. I really enjoy your channel, I have been crocheting over 40 years & still love to find new gadgets & learning new ways of doing things. ❤️❤️👏👏🇬🇧
Thank you! I haven't heard of that kind of things to use for threading!Good there are many choices as to what to use! I also find that there is always new to learn. 😊
I’m going to look for these. Weaving is always a problem for me, I hope this will help. ❤
Great, hope you find some!
I've seen these before but have yet to try them. I often had issues with needles where the eye was so much larger than the diameter of the needle, and then I found wool needles. They are metal with a flexible nylon loop for the eye. They work very well because the loop makes it easy to thread but squishes down to get through the stitches.
Those sound very practical too!
Ouch the shipping is crazy.
I know, it has changed internationally a lot, there is so much talk about that in Etsy seller groups. Many Americans have stopped shipping abroad, and us Europeans no longer order anything from outside the EU unless it is absolutely necessary!
Shipping from America has always been ridiculous! Sometimes an article is way less than even 1/2 the price of their shipping. Then take into consideration the exchange rate! I did find a place in America that accepts articles & then ships internationally for a reasonable price. This was worth it when the article was rather pricey OR if the seller would not ship internationally.
So glad you demonstrated these, I just bought them and hadn’t used them yet. Love your channel!
Thank you so much! 💗
Thank you again for another helpful, informative video. I wouldn't have thought the needles would work well, but you've made it obvious that they do. Thank you! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Just ordered these… thank you so much for testing them so we can confidently ordered them! ❤
Oh great, hope to get them soon!
Thank you for showing these to us. ❤
Thank you!
I saw your video a while ago...and immediately ordered a set of these needles from Amazon. Thanks for such a comprehensive review! I love these needles! Weird but very effective. They split the yarn so easily ,I'm sure the ends are locked in place! Your videos are so easy to understand and so Real! Thanks again from Newfoundland!
Wonderful, thank you so much, glad you find them food too!
I've looked at those but the postage was a killer for us too. I bought a needle threader called a Lohran. It threads bulky yarns one end and finer threads the other although. My husband glued two small buttons either side of the threader as they are made of thin metal and hard to pick up if on a table. The glued buttons make things easier. If the ones you demonstrated come to our shores I just might get some. It's good to have a variety for all the different yarns and jobs.
That needle threader sounds good - I have used ones meant for the sewing machine and they break right away. Hope you can get these ones I have on the video, in your local shops!
I have thought of trying those. Thank you for the demo.
Yes, worth trying! 🙂
I’ve been meaning to buy these for a while. Now I’ve seen your review, I will definitely get them. I’m in the UK so won’t have a problem. So sorry you had to pay so much for yours. I’m sure if you asked your subscribers for help someone will send you the things that are difficult to find in Finland.
That's true, could ask! I will be in Belfast all of October so I can probably get more there.
I bought some a while ago. I haven't used them. Your tutorial helped me on how to use them. I will use mine soon.❤
Definitely, give them a go!
Just ordered these on Amazon. What a find! Thank you.
That's great! 😊
They are in my Amazon shopping cart. Thanks for the review
Lovely!
So glad you showed us you get the same needles if you do bead work but it is steel and it is flimsy easy to break😊
That's true, they are similar, I have seen them in beadwork but haven't tried them!
I love them for short yarn!
Great! 😊
I have been wanting to try those. Thank you for the video.
Great!
Have used these for a long time. I love them! Have never broke the tiny one. Have lost it and replaced many times!
Great! I need to find a place to keep them so I won't lose them!
Tuula, thank you so much!!! I had no idea those existed & they look great!!! Since I live in the states the shipping should be less, otherwise I’ll have to save and get them in October or November. Thank you for your videos, I just love them, you’re always teaching me something new. Take care💞💞💞
Thank you! Yes, the shipping wouldn't be much in the States or several people on this thread have commented palces where you can get them, without having to order. Hope you find some, all the best!
Glad you got a chance to try out these needles! I picked up a set quite a few years ago and while they are great for weaving in short ends, what you have heard is correct: the smallest ones break very easily (I've lost two, I believe) and great care must be taken with them.
Enjoying your videos!
Thank you! 🙂 Yes,need to be careful!
These are the only needles I use for crochet. I have used them exclusively for 10 years, I crochet a lot and I've never broken one so I disagree with the person who said they break easily. If you size the yarn to the needle you won't break it. Loosing them is pretty easy though, especially the tiny yellow one.
Great to hear they don’t break easily! I need to get some.sort of a.tiny glass container for them so I won't lose them!
@TuulaMaaria I use old prescription bottles. You can see what is inside.
I love them ++++++! You do have to be careful working with them. I've broken a few. I would recommend everyone try them &, they are fantastic when used with mohair yarn.
That's good to know about mohair!
These have been around in the United States for many years. I've had mine at least 6 years. They work great! For short ends, you can insert the needle in your project before picking up the short end to weave through.
Great, maybe they start selling them in Finland - or they may somewhere but I didn't know what words to search as the name would be translated! Yes, I should have done one more on the video, very short by inserting the needle first!
I saw these a few years ago, and could not get them here in the UK and then forgot about it till I saw your vid. I've promptly bought them. Thanks for the reminder
Great, hope you will enjoy using them!
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll try these for myself ;) x
Great! 🙂
I am going to buy them and give them a try. Thanks for sharing.
Great, worth trying!
Those seem quite nice! Th for showing. I never have much trouble getting my yarn through metal needles. Many years ago I did a crewel embroidery and it gave a wonderful tip for threading yarn which I always use. Very light cardboard or heavy paper is the trick. Cut strips a little smaller than needle opening. And long enough to double. Double the paper and put in yarn. Thread it! I keep strips of heavy paper with my needles always.
That could work, haven't heard of that before!
Love these!
😊
I gifted these to my mother because of your video ❤️
I wish I knew about these while I was still living in England. I remember seeing them in Amazon but I didn't know what they were and how to use them.
Hope you can get them, they are handy!
I just went to Google and found a shop in Germany selling these needles for less than 7 euros. As I’m going to Munich in October I’ll get them! Never knew that they existed and without your video I wouldn’t even think they could be useful. Thanks a million for your review!
That's great! Yes, Germany sells them but i couldn't find a place that would ship to Finland!
I have had these for a lil while now. I like them! Got mine at Joann Crafts!!!
Good, there are several brands of similar ones I'm sure!
I love these needles, especially when you are weaving short-end yarn. The only bad thing is since they are plastic they break easily, especially the smaller ones. It will be great if they use a stronger material.
True, the same shape in metal would be more durable!
I have these and love them !
Great!
thank you for this video
🙂
Thanks! I can see how a set of these would make life easier.
Yes, I'm happy I discovered these 🙂
I usually use just a needle with big ear (kanavaneula), and if a yarn is too thick i first insert a thin thread, make a loop and put a thick yarn with that. This seemed to be too large for fine products like a sweater or a toop
Yes, that is what I have done sometimes, depends so much on what you are sewing or finishing. That's why I'm really happy about these new type of needles!
It's great to know that they work well. I think I have one or two somewhere in my craft room. I never tried them, though. I'll have to dig them out and give them a go. I feel your hip pocket pain. I live in Australia and postage from overseas to here can be a big shock.
Good, try your out! Yes, postage has gone up and also customs since EU changed the rules! The needles were so cheap that there wasn't customs added. I normally don't order anything from outside the EU now unless I need something that I can't get otherwise.
I found them recently and really like them too.
Great to know!
Tuula, I am a South African married to a Finnish man. He loves his socks. Will you please make a video or more than one, showing me how to crochet, or knit, the indoor socks? I don't know the techniques. Mother-in-law showed me once but there was a huge langue barrier. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Oh yes, so many Finnish people can’t do without woolen socks, myself included! I have a video of the very basic kind of knitted socks here ua-cam.com/video/UkkesSIVu9A/v-deo.htmlsi=_hJKpZuYIa7__P1K
I crochet over my yarn ends whenever possible.
Yes, definitely, that's what I normally do too. Still often situations where that isn't possible or isn't secure enough.
I’ve used for a long time. I have never had one to break. I do tend to loose them though 😀
I keep mine in an old prescription bottle with my hooks. You can see what they are in the bottle. I love them!
That's a good tip for keeping them!
I have a set with my crochet hooks & use a leftover yarn, thread all of them on 1 "string" made into a circle (knotted together) to keep them together. Certainly helps find them, when they are together.
I cut my yarn at an angle, makes it easy to thread through the eye of the needle. Great review just the same
That used to work for me but lo longer!
I use it too 😊
Good to hear!
Yes ouch for your cost. But thank you so much for this review. God bless have a great day.
Thank you, you too!
Will have a look at these Im in UK
You should get them there no problem.
38$ for those? Wow! There is another way: i believe its called a yarn threader. Another way is to use thread in the yarn needle, then use the thread to pull the yarn thru the needle. But i'am impressed with these needles you demonstrated. Especially for short yarn ends!
I tried yarn threaders when I was working on the thrifted curtain I posted a short time ago but they broke after just one use! These are better!
@@TuulaMaaria , i have one but the part that pulls the yarn thru the needle is metal. I usually forget i have it, lol. Im liking these ones you demonstrated. I'll be looking to get these!
Thank you for the review, the postage is insane
Oh I know! I'll be in Belfast, Ireland in October and will get more of there there. 🙂
Thank you very much for the review... I just ordered a set from Amazon. I am in Canada and here they are about $15 before delivery. I have Prime so it is free....thanks again.
A tip for getting yarn through the eye of a needle. Place your yarn over the needle, wrapped tightly around it. Pinch that point very tightly with your nondominant hand. Now, pull out the needle....and then using the eye of the needle, slip it over the fold that is held tightly still between your other hand. Just open enough to see the folded yarn, just so you can see it... your fingers hold it closed and tight and the eye just slips over it.. then pull it through easily with your fingers once you release it. Much harder to describe than to show, but this tip is awesome and have been using it for years. It is much easier to put the yarn through when it is all together instead of trying to get all the ends through.
Good luck!! :)
Great you ordered some!
That sounds like a good tip to try, thank you! 💗
@@TuulaMaaria
Yes... they arrived yesterday!! :) Yes, it is a good tip... learned it when I was being taught how to do bargello embroidery using thick yarns so lots of switching colours in canvas needle eyes... a life saving tip... hahaha...
Thanks again for all your videos!! Very informative and helpful! :)
💌
I've had these before, in UK. They are really handy and work well but unfortunately fragile ❤ need a nice little tin to put them in now! I wish they sold them in a packet too !
Great, I will get more of these, I will be in Belfast for most of October.
I had no idea these existed!!
There are just so many gadgets of all types!!
I have always wondered about these, I will have to get some now! By the way do you have a pattern for that amazing crochet garland hanging behind you?? It's gorgeous 😍
Great! The garland is my design that was published in Simply Crochet Magazine a couple of years ago and is now both in my ravelry and Etsy shops, possibly the magazine still sells it as well.
www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/frills-party-garland

Wool needles are my favorite
😊
After watching this, i also ordered a set, but they aren't available in Australia either, so mine are also coming from USA...$30 AU. Oh well if they make it easier like you demonstrated, I'm happy. Thanks.
Oh, you also needed to order from far away! Hope they will be useful once they arrive!
i thought maybe someone with a 3D printer could make these for pennies?
@@diamondringirl Don’t know if it can make durable ones! But the price of the needles is ok, it's the postage that is a lot!
I use a thinner crochet hook to fasten my ends because my yarn are thin (size 80 to size 10).
Great, that works too!
