- Welcome to this special chapter of John Christian’s Studio Sessions.
In this episode John will take us through the process of creating ‘Next Level’. Even though it’s already released, it’s nice to review some parts of the production.
If you’ve watched the previous episodes of John Christian’s Studio Sessions, you’ll definitely recognize some of the tricks he used to make ‘Next Level’. John starts off with just the kick and the bass of the track so you can hear what it’s like, and goes more into depth from there. All the elements are very simple, but by making sounds wider, move things to the back and working with a lot of stereo image, you can create an original sound. He also explains how he made the track easy to mix into a DJ set and why it is so recognizable, even when the previous track is still playing. Last but not least, we get to hear what the track sounds like when it’s not mastered
New episodes of John Christian’s Studio Sessions will be released this fall. If you have any technical question regarding this Studio Sessions, you can place your comments on DJJohnChristian
Still here 2024🔥🔥🔥
Thank you John ! your making my productions go Next Level ;)
That is good to hear!
+John Christian Do you use the logic compressor as a substitute for The Glue, since now with Logic 10 you can do a dry/wet mix of the compressed signal?
Ladies and gentlemen this is what I call making music, for real! Thanks John for sharing your experience with us. Hug from Italy.

You are awsome man..
Please make another record like this.. (y)
Hi John
After watching the episodes on mastering I thought it would be cool for you to do a few chapters on mixing as well. I know this is a very broad topic but maybe you could just go through how you handle common mixing issues you have in your mixes as well as those which other people have asked you about. Cheers!
in the next video i would like to see the studio session of "collage"
Hi John. Could your next studio session be on drum bussing/compression? My production and mixing skills have really grown since I started watching the studio sessions.
Very good video! Thank you for uploading this, its very helpful for producers ! :)
One question, I like your new track, can you make a similar video like this about "Collage"?
Thats would be nice!
I have problems with finding/composing those short fills within a drop or other parts, either by using some drums with synths.
Just try to combine things. It is not about finding the right pre made fill or so, you have to create something. And that is something which really can give you a signature.
hey! thanks for videos. great stuff! can you tell on which mac you run logic? you have so many plugins going on...
Can you make a video showing Collage or WHAT ?
Btw, thanks for this amazing video!
Wooo!! 25 minuten!
more of those tutoirlas please you help me much thank you
14:30 that slow headpeak tho xD
You need to collaborate with KSHMR.
why?
Hey John could you pls explain how you create your reverb bus and how you mix the plugins....eq, tremelo, stereo imager, compressor,...
thx :)
14:30, ayy bruh i see you
Hey John! is it better to eq and compress on a bus or grouped tracks versus eq and compressing each track individually.
tell us please how to tech myself to know how far a sound is in he mix and how to mach the distance in depth with added sounds
Hey John!
Thanks a lot for showing us how to rise our level in producing!
May i ask how you get a good this deep snapy kick?
Avicii have some nice kicks in his productions so are you! it makes such a big difference! :) . Do you know if theres a good producing "schoolbook" to buy and read?
Sorry for my awesome englidsh ;)
14:31 lol
I have an important question John, Reverb is a very importing weapon to use specially on drop leads, in this session, did you add reverb on all the drop lead package (all leads same reverb) or each seperate lead has its own reverb "DRY/WET"?.
Thank you for making this session, next level is still a banger and I never get tired of listening to it!
Greetings from Egypt!
@JohnChristian
Very helpful video . But I still don't really understand how you choose the leads for layering in drops or in breaks . That makes my tracks too cold i think :(
25:00 the SPL TwinTube was turned off.. no wonder why he's slamming the saturation knob all the way to the right without nasty distortion LOL
I have a question about the vocals. how did you automate the pitch in the vocals without the vocal will stretch up?
can you show us what you did in collage
Can you show how to get a mix tight and get rid of phasing?
Please make a video of kick processing.
When is the next one??! :))
Hi John! Could you please elaborate on how you used the MaxxVolume plugin for the Master? You only just briefly touched on it... I don't understand how you're using it for the final plugin in the chain since it doesn't have a Limiter on it? I copied the same settings as you but the Master is clipping way beyond 0 dB.... could use your help on this!
When making supersaw breakdowns where there are multiple layers of supersaw chords, leads and pads all in the upper/high end frequencies ( around 1k - 4k), how should I approach equing all of those separate layers? For example, when listening to your breakdown in Next Level even though there are multiple high frequency components they all seem to find there "space" in the mix. Much appreciated! Hope you get to reading this!
maybe a an envelope increasing the LFO rate/gain, instead of such dificult automation?
HI is there tutorial about vocal?
Im not gay , but I Love You
umm what did nicky romero do?
actually if you listen to john's version it's different than this
which one is actually better? fl studio or logic pro?
If you put a stereo imager on the master channel ( 21:32 and 23:18 ) , does it also effect the sub frequenties ?
It depends, if you use a full range stereo imager it is affecting the full range but you can also use a multiband stereo imager so you can choose. I would advice to use a multiband always so you are in control.
John Christian OK, Thanks ! :D
I have a question! What does it mean 'Nicky Romero Edit' in this case? is the project you show the first thing you sent him or already his edit? Hope you anwer dude, thanks! :)
It feels like when i take the exact settings on my KICK Nicky romero PLUG IN, it doesnt sound the same of your kick.
I don't understand ^^
hi John i have a question, If you push your leads so wide with a stereo imager won't they sound like crap when it is in mono?
You just have to check that once in a while during the production. I always search for the limits in that matter.
Alright John thanks a lot!
can anyone tell me what's the name of the program that he use ?
+Mody Ahmed logic pro 9 :)
thanks ^_^
I actually would like to know: why do you EQ 39hz (D#1) and 51hz (G#1) ?
you don't eq F ?! F1 = 43hz
10:37 this ghost :v
did you know that john is my teacher brother
I as you can guy can see theres not rule in the mix lolzzzz
14:32 :v :v
Why is he letting the tracks distort so much and then just lowering all the frequensies on the master channel, rather than just putting all tracks at a volume so that they wont clip?
Teenage Violence Because he thinks it sounds good that way.
Teenage Violence Easy.... it sounds good to his ears ! It'ts not about what the school of producing says or a book says..his ears tells him it's good and the fact that this it's a song that's been played in clubs..so it has proven it's self in the real world ! that's the lesson here !
There are many ways to cook a meal, if it taste good then it taste good !
The thing with that is that when you have a distorted mix, you can still have a clean master. This is because you mix in a daw instead of a real mixer. So when you lower the volume inside an eq plug-in (or any other) the distortion will dissapear and you can go on with the master chain. The advantage of that is that the mix is pumping the max and that is what i wanted for this track. JC
Okay, I understand. Thanks so much for the tips!
HUGE thanks for this one john! I know you are busy but when you find the time could you please give me your feedback on my new track?? soundcloud.com/daomusic/young
