This helped me out a ton. I don't think it is just a cosmetic issue. I am happy to be corrected on this, however, if the NVRAM_CLR setting is enabled (jumper cable on pins 1 & 3), any changes to the BIOS will not be saved. I needed to enable SR-IOV on my server and the it would disable after every server reboot. Placing the jumper cable on pins 3 & 5 solved that problem. Cheers !
They are known as "KMM" for Keyboard-Mouse-Monitor and there are various models from all the major server brands. If you buy them used, be sure they come with a full set of rails. The rails are often impossible to find by themselves, or are prohibitively expensive.

Hi, not had my R710 long, it’s my first server, don’t suppose you fancy doing a how to on how to upgrade the bios, firmware, idrac etc please. Trying to read up on it it’s now not supported by Dell so it’s not as easy to do (for me) Iv installed Proxmox on it and got a few vm’s running but I’m limited to 2tb drives. Any help greatly appreciated! Cheers
I would be happy to do that, except my R710 has been fully updated already! I should have thought to record doing the updates when I was doing it! Maybe next time... That said, all I did was go to dell.com and downloaded all the updates for my server. Since I use Linux, they were a bunch of .bin scripts where are just some self-extracting shell scripts. All i did was run them one after another. If you have particular problem, let me know i can try to help. :-)
Art of Server Thanks. So if I switch to another drive so I’m not booting up Proxmox. Install Ubuntu for instance and give that a go? Or any idea if I can do it in a vm? Must admit my Linux knowledge is limited so any tips appreciated. We have a bank holiday on Monday here in 🇬🇧. Will give it a go then. Cheers
@@shaunwhiteley3544 Proxmox is Debian based Linux, so that *might* work by itself without the need to boot something else, but I haven't tried it. I know most of Dell's scripts are geared towards enterprise linux like RHEL or CentOS, so if you're going to boot something else to run the firmware/bios updates, I would run that to reduce the chances of problems. Dell also provides Windows utilities for updates, so that's another option too ; though I'm not familiar with them.
Yeah it’s serial console settings. I had the same thing. Not a bug but a feature. No need to clear Settings - just F2 and change some console settings.
Hi, thanks for the info, but doing this will affect the RAID configuration or not? I have an existing virtual drive , I'm afraid by doing this will reset or delete the RAID configuration.
Can this fix an issue with it being stuck on configuring memory for days? OK so when I booted from the nvram pin set it seemed to work just fine but when I moved the pins back to default I still have the same problem. Any ideas?
@@ArtofServer It seems another flash and re-seating the RAM seemed to help, It was already placed in the correct order but figured while I was inside looking for anything out of place that I might as well do that. I also changed the sticks of RAM that would have been used in order from the VMs i had just allocated memory to with the sticks that would be the last memory to pull from.(According to R720 documentation I pulled from Dell's website) Just in case there was an issue with one of the sticks as the last change made to the server (besides an update) was adding 2 VMs and allocating 4GB of memory to each.
This trick works, but it's more of an "oopsie" on the Dell BIOS side, the code they get (they don't write the BIOS, they license it, probably from AMI) has the code and functionality to enable/disable showing the logo, they probably forgot to add the option to the BIOS GUI setting part.
Yeah, i think you're right about that. On other brand servers, usually there's an option to have a verbose POST, or a "fancy" one with logo. On the R710, I couldn't find such an option that brought the logo back. So, I'm not even sure how someone got it into the state it was in where it was not showing the logo during POST.

Hey. If we reset the bios using this method then it will reset the idrac password as well? Thx
No, CMOS/BIOS reset is different than iDRAC
what's that keyboard/screen 1U combo called? would be nice to have, i'm sure there are some on ebay :)

Looks like you have disabled "Silent Boot". Turn it on, same noise but it hides the messages and displays the logo.....
I did try poking around at the settings available in the BIOS setup menu, but I couldn't find a setting that brought back the logo after changing it.

Nothing to do with RAID configuration.

A little late to the party, but that can also happen if Serial Console redirect is enabled.
Thanks for the info! I didn't know that... very interesting!
