I have seen several videos by others of the Platte River weir. It’s amazing to see so many fish backed up like that. I grew up in Michigan and have fished for kings and cohos since their first run back up into the rivers. I’m trying to time my trip this fall to see this spectacle. GM sent me out of Michigan on the world tour as plants close and or relocate the work. Currently in southern Indiana, I’m planning my fall trip and staying at the Platte River campground. Do you remember the date when you filmed this? Would be awesome to see this. C’mon down and fish Giant cats with us sometime. We get fish up to 100 pounds.
I have always wanted to go south a bit for some cats. Y’all get some gar that we don’t have too I think. That video was a few years ago, but I believe it was September when we were there.
Just make sure the hook on your spinner is the legal size. No treble hooks allowed on this river so you have to replace the hook with a small single hook.
So the fish can’t pass that weir? Don’t they let them through so they can collect their spawn? I think they stock the most in the platte so they have the most return to collect eggs for re-planting right? Geez I have so many questions 😂😳 lol
NickAndCaroline lol yea so they randomly let x amount through on a weekly basis but some are harvested for dog food or something as well. Some are let through to the upper river some are harvested for eggs. But the weir is basically purgatory for coho lol
Zayne Crank study the salmon run and learn to track it so you can time your trips well. Watch my videos as at least the next 3 are all salmon videos with tips and tricks. I’m still learning a lot and this year has been my most successful yet and the run isn’t over yet! They are a tricky fish at first. What area do you live in? I may be able to point you in the right direction.
Wow! What day was this? I'm thinking of going salmon fishing tomorrow somewhere between grand rapids and ludington-- any tips/locations that are hitting well?
acronkright this was 2 weeks ago. Your best bet is the betsie river for kings. For cohos the rogue or the platte should be productive. Or the grand at 6th street
Mid September is a really good Time to hit that river up. Fish as close to the weir as possible. The fish will school up and move back down river. They hold tight along the brush line on the other side. Use Black flies, spawn sacs, rubber egged and Beads. You’ll see the fish moving with the wake they make. I caught 3 from that river this year. Pretty cool stuff. Good Video. Fish On !!!! And good luck🐟🎣🐟🎣🐟🎣🎣
Daniel Mckinney thanks! That was basically what we did but still no luck. You’re exactly right though it’s cool to see that wake and know that there’s a bunch of fish right under the water.
Reel Michigan Anglers. Once you see the wake coming, cast just right in front of the school, you’ll see your line jump. Set the hook. Chances are you’ll hook up. We’ll be hitting the Grand today in Grand Rapids, then hitting the Betsie 1 more time next weekend, I heard there are a lot of fish there. In November we’ll go up to Lexington and Port Sanilac and try for Atlantic’s, I never caught one but hooked up last year and it burned my reel. Lol.
Daniel Mckinney Atlantic‘s and pinks are going to be at the top of my list of fish to target soon. Aside from them I really need to get my first musky and my first sturgeon.
Corby Walsh nope but it has to have legal size single hooks. So most common lures would need hook swaps. That’s what we did I swapped hooks on the ride up.

North East Angler that’s funny small world! I ran into somebody that recognized me from my videos up north this weekend while Fishing the Betsy lol.

I don't like that , they should take what they need and let all other fish head upstream . In the old days they would let them go father upstream.
My understanding is that some of what they harvest is used for restocking which is a good thing. But I agree otherwise.

I could be wrong but using spinners and lures is illegal on that river

It’s definitely illegal to use spinners
Is not Platte is not a fly's only River fished it for over 43 yrs.
No weighted hooks
