Thank you, a very informative presentation.
I'm here learning about lintels after discovering a missing lintel in our house, missing over a large window in the kitchen.
I discovered it just before beginning to replaster the walls following a rewire. I couldn't believe it when I began taking the old plaster off! All that is holding up the roof trusses over a window is what must be a "wood lintel".
The bungalow isn't that old - around 40 years old. The previous owner must have altered the kitchen from the original structure. I don't know who did the work when the windows were fitted.
I have no idea what a job like that would cost to fix as I only discovered it yesterday. The window is around 2.5m wide and its a cavity wall - breeze block internal - brick external skin.
I'm more anxious than usual because every time we get a tradesperson in to do any work here, they invariably leave a mess or serious faults which we end up having to rectify ourselves in the end. The rewire was the same, even though a NICEIC registered electrician did the rewire.
The thought of finding a builder to carry out structural work fills me with dread based on previous experiences with everything else. Moreover, I don't know how much this type of structural repair would cost too.
Anyway, thank you again for your presentation. It helped me better understand the process.

Excellent bricklaying skills, but the lintel isn't right for the job; too weak for a 2 story building, it'd be transferring some load to the door frame below. It's really for a single story single leaf garage or simialr. Still, you made the best of a bad situation, you filled the mortar in properly, most other bricklayers I've seen would skimp it, so well done to you.
