I found it very difficult to make patch pockets that are perfectly shaped until I started cutting the pocket finished size out of lightweight cardboard. I use the temples as an ironing aid and pressed the fabric around the cardboard to form pockets that are exactly matched. So rewarding!u
Totally agree that Sussex Seamstress makes lovely patterns. I have 3 in my cart, including the Bramber pants right now. I also purchased the Maison Fauve Zenith pattern - so dreamy. Thank you for sharing such wonderful patterns.
Your videos are great! I love how you describe the different patterns and their unique features, plus pros and cons. I agree with you about the Pattern Emporium designer. She really inspires me to want to make her designs!
I usually make shorts and obtain good results with the fit. I have bought some lovely stretch twill fabric for cropped trousers. Cara, thanks for a great roundup of trouser patterns and as always-happy sewing! x
Some great recommendations thank you Cara. I also love the Pattern Emporium Urban pants in cropped or full length which I recently made in the wide leg version and they are now my secret pyjama trousers. Your Esti sets look great for Summer, i might give that a try next Summer because I like the look of a jumpsuit but can't stand continually getting in and out of them. The cargo styles look great as well.❤
I’m with you totally on the jumpsuit issue! I love a jumpsuit but they’re not without their issues 😅 I’ll definitely check those urban pants out, thank you
Love your videos, so detailed, thank you! I actually have quite a few Pattern Emporium patterns, you are right, the designer is Kate and her instructions are phenomenal, I would recommend them to anyone.
Pants making is my sewing goal this year. I've tried the Pattern Emporium Urban pants so far and am very happy with the fit. Style Arc Barry are also worth a try. I have made these in Tencel. Loved seeing your pattern recommendations Cara. So good to find patterns worth making more than once. 😍 🙋♀️Leanne
Thank you for all the information on trousers, Cara. I"m looking for a trousers pattern at the moment, and this vlog has been a great help. So looking forward to your next vlog on blouses.
I think you could, but with the level of detail in the pockets and pleats this would be lost with the natural crease that linen has, best to choose something that will be a bit more stable
Pattern matching is easier than it looks. Before I went away to college, I made a plaid wool wardrobe of a cape, beret, jumper, blazer, pants, and a pleated skirt with 27 pieces! For matching pockets, etc, lay the pocket pattern over the pants back piece where the pocket placement is marked then trace the lines on the pattern paper and move it to the new fabric to cut out by putting the lines right over the new fabric lines.
My favorite pants pattern was from the ‘80s or ‘90s. The slack’s waist was formed using folds and folding over the fabric at the waist. It was the perfect way to fit the waist. Either make fold which made pleats deeper or shallower to exactly fit your waist, then fold it over at your exact waist height. No worries about cutting and sewing side seams, waistbands, or having the crotch depth wrong.
I have a Style Arc pattern that I really like. I think it is called Barry or something like that. It is such a simple pattern, tapered legs, shaped pockets and elasticated waist. I have made this various times in linen for the summer and they are ridiculously comfortable. Recently, just for a change, I made the Papercut Palisade trousers. I was a bit worried because the pockets looked amazing but complicated. However, I followed the instructions to the letter and they worked a treat. I am just about to buy some soft pink linen and make them again.
I am loving this top 5 series Cara, loved all the blouses and now the same with trousers. Although trousers are my nemesis, I really struggle with fitting, especially the waist, but you have convinced me on the Aina trousers, love that little elastication at the waist. Thank you Cara, you are always such an inspiration 😊
That was a very enjoyable video, glad I found your channel, just newly back to sewing and I have made 2 skirts, both a bit too small and a blouse that was way too big! Time to start learning how to properly fit and size my garments before I put in all the effort.
Hi so lovely to hear from you! The great part about sewing is that you’re learning with every stitch, so enjoy the process and try not to be too frustrated, good luck
Thanks for another fab vlog Cara. I'm a mad Maison Fauve fan, and I love the cargo trousers. I would go for elastic free hems too. I've gern searching the high street for cargo without elastic hems. All your trousers 👖 look fabulous. So nicely finished ✅️ 👌 x
Great video - 2 pairs I hadn’t been aware of - which I am now investigating!!! lol And you have given me yet another nudge to get in and make the Thea’s ! ❤
Making trousers used to be a doddle but this time around I'm finding it challenging. Your Bellini blouse looks gorgeous. Can't wait for the tweed run! I'm currently making the Thea trousers - I'll let you know how it goes...
Totally agree about the Walk Boldly trousers by Pattern Emporium, secret pyjamas with pizazz!! Love the ones I made last tyear and like you, will definitely be making more pairs.
Thank you, I don’t, I must be lucky, but in all honesty you just don’t know until you try. The Tilly and the buttons patterns and closet core patterns both have excellent fit adjustment advice as does the pattern emporium site too, start with patterns from these companies and take it from there
Great vlog thank you for sharing. I’m really keen to make an Esti set. I’ve only made the Tilly Safyia trousers from her make in simple book and I wonder how do they differ to the Esti trousers please?
They are both quite similar and very easy, the key difference is the Safyia trousers have an integrated waistband but the Esti has a separate one, they are also wider and longer, u also have pockets in safyia but not esti
I saw a picture of the tweed run in the paper but, sadly, you weren't on it, Cara. It looked like a great event. Like you and your Esti pants, I've made five pairs of the True Bias Lander pants. I'm wearing my denim pair right now. I've also made the shorts. I have to use the waistband from a different pattern though. The Lander waistband is rectangular and it gapes at the back on me. I use a curved one. Other than that, it's an excellent pattern and fits me really well.
Thank you for looking out for me that’s very kind we had the best day ever. Do you know I need to try the lander pants the pattern that I have, but I’ve never tried but I love the idea of a curved waistband because I think I did have an issue with the waistband on that so thank you for the top tip and it’s lovely to hear from you.
Great video, thanks very much , very helpful. The Bramber trousers took me through most of the winter in corduroy. It's the zip fly that puts me off anything more complicated, but I think I'm going to have to try!😅
Please do the sense of accomplishment is really brilliant. I’d honestly recommend the Tilly and the buttons, Thea trousers for amazing zip construction and instructions.
Well! Just finished my second pair of Thea trousers in red linen. You're right, the Thea pattern is straightforward and Tilly's zip sewalong video is wonderful! Thanks for the encouragement!❤
I’m so nervous of making trousers….I’ve heard so many people say about the fitting is difficult. What fabrics and where from please? I’m housebound so I have to rely on shopping online and then disappointed when it arrives. I’m in the UK. I’d love to make my own trousers 👖 as I need comfort and weight keeps fluctuating. 😢😂😊❤
Hi there, it’s lovely to hear from you in the video. I do talk about the different weights of fabric trouser weight fabric anything from 180 to 300 g/m² is really good trouser weight so a linen or a denim or a stretch denim or a cotton twill. These are all great fabrics. Lots of independent fabric shops for example, beyond the pink door fabric, godmother, would be more than happy to help and decide which fabric would be best good luck with your search and trouser making
I enjoyed your video… now I am thinking of making some pants. I was wondering about the fabric you are using for the styles that do not have a fitted waist. I think you mentioned one fabric has a it of stretch. Do most fabrics you use for pants tend to have a bit of spandex in them? If you use a twill, does the twill have spandex?
Hi, twill doesn’t tend to have spandex in it and most trousers don’t have any stretch. But a stretch denim a low percentage stretch in it just gives a little wearing ease which is usually very comfortable
Thank you so much for your beautiful kind words about our Walk Boldly Pants pattern! - Kate
You’re more than welcome I love them and your patterns x
I found it very difficult to make patch pockets that are perfectly shaped until I started cutting the pocket finished size out of lightweight cardboard. I use the temples as an ironing aid and pressed the fabric around the cardboard to form pockets that are exactly matched. So rewarding!u
Ah yes that’s a great plan, I believe that’s what I did for the tremplin trousers, its lovely to hear from you
Your sewing and finishing skills are an inspiration. I can see the happiness sewing gives you and it’s contagious ❤.
Thank you, I hope it rubs off on everyone, I’m so glad you enjoy watching x
This is so helpful Cara. This is the season of trousers for me. Have a great week-Claudia
Thank you Claudia, you too
Omg that pattern matching on the Tweed thea pants divine !!

Great recommendations thank you. Like them all…not sure which one to try. 😁Thanks again.
Excellent. What a lovely problem to have 😅
Absolutely beautiful blouse. I just might need to get that pattern!
Go for it! Enjoy

Thank you so much it’s lovely to hear from you and I wish you all the best in your hunt for the best trouser pattern
Hi Cara, your enthusiasm shines out of the screen, thanks so much for your vlogs, can I just ask, can you make the tremplin trousers from linen?
I think you could, but with the level of detail in the pockets and pleats this would be lost with the natural crease that linen has, best to choose something that will be a bit more stable

You can always use thread to make an X on the back of pants to tell which side goes behind. Love your clothes, classy lady

Great selection there. I think I might have to try the Tremplin trouser , love yours an really like all the pockets for when I’m out and about 😊
Honestly it’s such a lovely pair of trousers, I really do need to make some more, just got some black twill that would be perfect ☺️
Phew, what a list. A few I think that would suit me. Thanks a mill 🎉
You’re welcome I’m glad you’ve found some you like

Lol go for it! As u can see I love them ❤️❤️
I just ordered the Esti set and Thea Trousers after viewing your video. Thank you
Enjoy they really are great patterns
Your makes are just fantastic Cara. I'm going to make the Thea trousers and wondered what type of fabric you used for yours please.
Thank you Linda, the cream pair is a cotton twill a bit like denim the other is a tweed like fabric from pound fabrics
Making trousers used to be a doddle but this time around I'm finding it challenging. Your Bellini blouse looks gorgeous. Can't wait for the tweed run! I'm currently making the Thea trousers - I'll let you know how it goes...
I truly hope your experience with the Thea trousers is a good one, it’s a great pattern, thank you for your kind words

Yay aren’t they great! So lovely to hear from you
What kind of fabric is the tan/grey pair made of? They’re beautiful!
Thank you it’s a heavyweight linen that I brought last year from rainbow fabrics
Fab video!! Love the Tremplin trousers, need to try those in the Autumn ❤️
Thank you Sarah they are such an amazing pattern
You've given lots of trouser possibilities. Now if I can just get a pattern to fit my flat seat...
Ah I can help you there as I too have a completely flat seat, and I haven’t made a single adjustment to any of these ☺️
Some great trouser recommendations Cara 😀
Thank you Clare x
To get back pockets to look perfect, I cut a template out of cardboard then iron the fabric around the template so they match exactly.
I see someone else had the same inspiration. Great minds…..
Oh funny. I watched this before and made the same comment!
Love this thank you ❤️❤️
Great video Cara. Do U have to do any adjustments to your trousers? ie crotch depth or curved? This is the part that puts me off sewing trousers!
Thank you, I don’t, I must be lucky, but in all honesty you just don’t know until you try. The Tilly and the buttons patterns and closet core patterns both have excellent fit adjustment advice as does the pattern emporium site too, start with patterns from these companies and take it from there
