Most of her life she was abused by people, yet she quietly still cared and forgave them!...We too had marriage struggles but worked them out. We loved each other desperately. We had our daughter in 10/25/ 99 but by Jan.12, 2001 Mary died from bone cancer... I love this song... I see it as a girl who was seen as nothing but an extension of her boyfriend. Eventually she decided to become her own person, to leave the relationship that was stiffling her growth and forcing her to be his silver instead of her own gold.

There's this concept of love and romance, that one should be 'that godsend thing' saving its 'soulmate' from the 'utter shitty world'... but that's not necessarily love, one cannot be relegated to be only a 'bright side' or a mere 'reason' for the other to live, like for example this manic-pixie-dream-girl trope that doesn't allow that character to actually be its own whole individual.
