A little known secret is that women can simply will themselves to turn off emotionally in a relationship that doesn't necessarily have anything wrong with it. I love this song... I see it as a girl who was seen as nothing but an extension of her boyfriend. Eventually she decided to become her own person, to leave the relationship that was stiffling her growth and forcing her to be his silver instead of her own gold.

There's this concept of love and romance, that one should be 'that godsend thing' saving its 'soulmate' from the 'utter shitty world'... but that's not necessarily love, one cannot be relegated to be only a 'bright side' or a mere 'reason' for the other to live, like for example this manic-pixie-dream-girl trope that doesn't allow that character to actually be its own whole individual. That is quite a relevant issue these days.
