caffeine doesn't actually wake you up, it suppresses the chemical in your brain that makes you feel tired/drowsy (adenosine).
The body tends to want chemicals to be balanced, so when you consume more and more caffeine, your body will produce enough adenosine to balance it, but the adenosine lasts longer in your body which is why you can feel super tired/groggy all day despite drinking tons of beverages with caffeine.
It's better for you to limit caffeine consumption to only a few times every couple weeks in order to give yourself the most effect of of the caffeine without artificially increasing your sleepy neurotransmitters.
This makes so much sense. I always tell people how coffee doesn't really give me more energy it just makes me stay awake longer, no wonder lol.
