I love how you pronounce the Finnish words very slowly. It helps a lot to figure out the correct pronunciation and spelling of the word even if I am not looking at the video. Your videos are really appreciated
She has an extremely clear diction in both English and Finnish. I am listening to her at 1.5 speed and I can get all she says, both in English and Finnish.
I really hope there's no mistakes in this, I spent all day editing this so my brain got a little woozy towards the end xD I've never asked this before, but if you could spare a thumbs up for this video it would be really nice since I don't think I've ever spent this much time researching + filming + editing for a video on this channel before ^-^ EDIT: Ok watching this back I noticed a few typos, but nothing major that takes away from the content. Just a few silly mistakes SORRY
A phenomenal job you've done! I was formerly a Spanish teacher with a little bit of French as well, and in graduate school I took both courses in the history of the Spanish/French language. The two languages of course descended from the Latin or "Vulgar" Latin, and I can remember the "k,p,t ...(?)" phenomenon. Finnish belongs to the Uralic language or Finno-Ugric which is a far cry from the Indo-european languages which also includes (Vulgar) Latin > Spanish, French, etc. Last year was my first experience in Suomi and I got interested in the Finnish language. As soon as the COVID virus is contained, hopefully I'll make another trip in the near future...we'll see! But in the meantime, keep up the awesome job in your videos "Katchat" 😀
I discovered your channel a few days ago and I can’t stop watching 😱. I already have written all your lessons on my notebook so I’m learning a lot. Also, I'm listening to finnish music to familiarize myself with the pronunciation. Kiitos paljon! Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
I decided it is time for me to go all-in on learning Finnish. After finishing the Duolingo course, I found your channel. So with your eight+ years of providing these videos, I started with the oldest three days ago and I’m working my way forward. This is the hardest one yet 😂 Thank you for making it easier to understand and learn ❤ Only some 300+ videos to go 😂 Keep up the amazing work!!!
Hi Kat, I just reached the end of the Duolingo Finnish content (currently at least), so I'm digging to your catalogue of videos and these ones on cases were my first stop. Thanks so much, you make it so clear.
It is so helpful to watch the difference in how you shape the sounds in English and in Finnish, your enunciation in both languages is very clear and quite distinct. For example, when you place a Finnish word in the middle of a sentence in English, you automatically change the way your mouth produces the sounds and it naturally switches back and forth as you move from one language to the other. It really helps those of us new to Finnish hear the difference in how the “same” sound is still pronounced differently in these two languages. Like “hey” vs “hei”. They seem mostly the same but the tones and emphasis make them sound different. I would love to see a discussion about the difference in where you feel like your voice “comes from” in Finnish vs English since you have such natural tones in both. Kiitos paljon!
For sure, Kat, all your work on this complex part of the language has enabled me to get a handle on making plural forms. Good example words, step-by-step instructions. A la Kat!
Hi Kat! I recently started taking up Finnish (mainly because my fascination with Uralic languages came out of nowhere; it just said 'hey, here I am,' a band I'm getting into as an up and coming musician is from Finland, and I heard Tolkien was influenced by Finnish)! From the very little I already understand from another UA-camr's video, Finnish is actually a genius language (in my opinion). This helps tremendously though because you dive deep into the workings of the language, whereas the other person had a basic introductory video! These lessons will be kept in mind so that when I'm confident enough to begin reading Finnish text (albeit with a dictionary in hand lol), I can identify and understand the changes more easily. On top of all this, from the little Finnish I've read and heard, it's incredibly beautiful to read and listen to! Kiitos x1000!! 🇫🇮🤍🇨🇦
I became fascinated with Finnish too! After watching Deadwind on Netflix I found that I loved listening to the language so much so that I did a deep dive into the language and the country. I absolutely love the culture of Finland and I feel more motivated to learn a new language more than ever. I can totally relate to this newfound interest lol
Thanks a lot for this video! It's rare to find resources between "nothing about the exceptions" and "every exception ever", and you found the sweet spot 🙂 I hope that other videos about cases will come!
"I've been learning Finnish with Katchat, and it's been a great experience! Katchat explains everything clearly, is patient, and always encourages me to practice. My Finnish skills have improved a lot, and I feel more confident. Highly recommend Katchat to anyone learning Finnish!"
I have YKI test today and while getting ready for it, I just wanted to hear finnish lessons in the background. I found your videos and now I am in love them. Subscribed instantly, liked. Thank you for the hard work.❤
hopefully, you'll do all 14 cases like this, with plural form. it's very clear and helpful ♥️♥️ thank you! usually, I'm not really into studying by videos, but yours are exception. you're so cute and lovely, and the way you explain every little detail, and pronounce words slowly 🌻☀️
You're so good at teaching. I need to watch more of your videos because lately I've been feeling overwhelmed, I can't catch up on our lessons. So, I need to go back to basics. Kiitos paljon Kat!
Kiitos paljon kaunis opettaja! ❤😊 Mä kirjoitan kaikille sanoit, haha sorry if its wrong😅 still learning how to construct a sentence in a right way😊 Your videos really helped me a lot and I love learning finnish with you opettaja kat, koskea you make learning finnish easy😃😊 Greetings from Philippines🇵🇭

So time to proudly kick off your shoes lean back and have a salmiakki or two! :-) Kiitos paljon! from one of your German students
Thank you for making these videos. I couldn’t findxx videos where the finnish is explained in english. I’m taking a Finnish course in Finland but it’s a challenge since all is explained in Finnish. So I find you very helpful !
Thank you so much for your detailed description! (I've got to admit that I absolutely feel the same way about this 'let's just say what sounds best'-stuff, because I do the same in German as well) - Anyway, I think all these exceptions would have been really confusing, but thanks to your detailed description an explanation they do not even seem to be that hard to understand anymore.😊 THANK YOU!!!

Amazing video:) thanks so much it helped me a lot in my learning process. If you could do more videos on Finnish grammar it would be amazing. Your way of explaining is really good. Thanks!
Wow, this makes me so happy to hear. Thank you so much for your lovely comment and kiitos paljon! Onnea (good luck) with the rest of your Finnish course! :)
I have learned so much! I am going to buy a notebook just for all of this great information. Finnish is making more sense. You are helping me crack the Suomi code! Kiitos!

you kinda made it too complex with the step-by-step explanation but it also makes everything pretty clear but maybe it's just me lol.. so i simplified that to "+t" "-nen -> -set" "kk -> k . k -> _ . pp -> p . p -> v . tt -> t . t -> d" "loan'd words with -i -> +t" "finn words with -i -> -et" "-e -> -et" "-si -> -det". so yeah, thanks a lot for the deep explanation! i happened to download some free finnish taught in russian books a few months ago and was learning it with those: one from 1997, another from early 2000th and both of them only mention something like "you just slap +t at the end to form a plular, but you should substitute -i at the end with an -e ONLY if the word consists of TWO syllables (for ex. nimi, pieni, suuri) and ONLY if that's a real Finnish word, not a loaned one. and there were also the rules of k-p-t. and thats LITERALLY IT. sometimes i think i'd learn the language more correctly with the youtube videos lol.. gonna be checking your channel for more info later on for sure, writing everything down meanwhile listening to you feels pretty good, thanks! uwu but yeah, have you heard about that "2-syllables with real finnish words" rule?
This series is great! I hope you continue making these videos! PS: I'm usually very picky about subscribing, but I subscribed after watching 3 videos...

wow!!! pretty shocking 🤔 🤔 kiitos paljon Kat for explaining all of this in the most clarity possible ! (as well as for the upcoming video lessons as well! 😎 )
Do you think you will cover the rest of the plural case rules? There are still many I do not understand such as why kallis becomes kalliit while roskis become roskikset.
I love your videos. Do you do anything else on Finland, or have another channel? I'd love to see you talk about shopping, daily life, or restaurants, traveling around FInland, hotels, museums, ferries, weather stuff.
Thank you so much! :) I do have another channel, it's a bit more free-style and you're welcome to check it out if you wish: ua-cam.com/users/adamlsidney
The last time I was in Finland was 2006. Hard to think but I am 41 now. Your English is very good but you sound like you learned English from a nonAmerican. Are you going to school in Britain? Be safe, and stay in. I have a beagle too. Aloha from Maine. Your very helpful.
KatChats, thank you for this explanation, which made my Finnish learning easy. However, how do I differentiate between the old and new Finnish words that end in SI ta-vu? Olet paras opettaja ja sinulla on hyvät taidot.🥰
Hey! First of all thanks alot from your very nice and clear videos. My question is: When we change the word (Opettaja) to Plural, we write (Opettajat) or (Opetajat) (Tt=T)?
Those that end on an 'i' that changes into an 'e' have a sort of sub-split in partitiivi. Suuri - suurta - suuret, same as kieli - kielta, meri - mertä, nuori - nuorta, pieni - pientä, saari - saarta, etc. So the partitiivi adds -ta/tä. But nimi - nimeä - nimet, like järvi - järveä, onni, talvi, joki, mäki, etc. So the partitiivi adds just -a/ä. Opiskelen nyt suomea itse ja luen Suomen Mestari oppikirjaa. Sanatyypit selitetään kappaleessa 7 ja oppikirja sanoo "Jos soumalainen sana loppuu -i, et voi nähdä, mikä sanatyyppi se on. Sinun täytyy muistaa, mikä sanatyyppi se on". Sinä sanot videossa että ... it has to do with whether ... sana on vanha tai uusi, mutta vanhat sanat verkkosivustossa loppuvat molemmat -a/ä ja -ta/tä. So it seems the old/new approach isn't applicable in partitiivi. I know it's not exactly the topic of the video but it's still a thing that comes up as partitiivi is everywhere. Up till now everything's been rules, rules, rules. So when the book told me I gotta learn them and remember them, I thought "ooh, no, not like in German!" :D Kiitos videosta!
I love how you pronounce the Finnish words very slowly. It helps a lot to figure out the correct pronunciation and spelling of the word even if I am not looking at the video. Your videos are really appreciated

Thank you so much! :) I do have another channel, it's a bit more free-style and you're welcome to check it out if you wish: ua-cam.com/users/adamlsidney

Thank you
This was very helpful. I bet you have a lot of free time on your hands. Remember to stay home and stay safe.
Thank you, you too! I'm actually doing a Master's degree so we still have our semester, but online. So still quite busy until summer vacation xD
The last time I was in Finland was 2006. Hard to think but I am 41 now. Your English is very good but you sound like you learned English from a nonAmerican. Are you going to school in Britain? Be safe, and stay in. I have a beagle too. Aloha from Maine. Your very helpful.
Thank you very much I swear when I watch your videos I learn A lot of things big thanks 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I'm so happy to hear that seriously, thank you so much!
🌷
KatChats, thank you for this explanation, which made my Finnish learning easy. However, how do I differentiate between the old and new Finnish words that end in SI ta-vu? Olet paras opettaja ja sinulla on hyvät taidot.🥰
Hi can you please make a video about yes-no questions?
When to use onks and oot?
Thank you very much
Hey! First of all thanks alot from your very nice and clear videos.
My question is:
When we change the word (Opettaja) to Plural, we write (Opettajat) or (Opetajat) (Tt=T)?
For this word it would be: opettajat
So when the book told me I gotta learn them and remember them, I thought "ooh, no, not like in German!" :D
Kiitos videosta!
it is kieltä and merta. Do not ask me why.
