    I agree strongly, Thom Yorke is the greatest living musician (in my opinion). Everything hes done with other artists outside of Radiohead, his solo career and other bands he’s in is fucking incredible.

      Love this channel. I’m no music expert. It’s really interesting to hear how ixi analyses the tracks and the compositions. What I also find stunning is that, oh god I hope I’m correct here - Thom Yorke doesn’t read music - but yet he can create so much that beguiles and fascinates the likes of me ( I know no music theory) up to people like ixi who obviously is completely around everything theoretical and beyond). That is an incredible gift. If that is not enough……. Jonny greenwood is , dare I say it, a more innovative musician/composer. Once in a generation talents in the same band. I didn’t even mention Colin’s bass which every UA-camr absolutely quite rightly lauds).

    I remember when A Moon shaped Pool came out, I had a hard time appreciating it. It felt too quite for some reason. However, it is probably the Radiohead album that has grown the most on me over the years, and songs like Present Tense and Glass Eyes have become some of my favourites.
    Daydreaming takes the top spot though. It's beautiful and sad expression of sorrow, makes me feel like I'm floating on a blank quite lake at night. When the song swells, it lifts me up into the clouds, towards the stars, only to gently put me back into the lake at the end. I'll never forget the time I saw them live in 2017. They opened with Daydreaming, and almost on cue, a silent rain descended on us, which lasted the whole concert.

      First time I listened to it I was like "wow. This is so good." But then I put it away. A year later I came back to it and went all in. It's become one of my top 3 favorite Radiohead albums! Daydreaming feels so incredibly sad to me, that's just the way I connect to it. Concert sounds amazing!

  • @ettuaslumiere
    @ettuaslumiere Рік тому +4

    Love your analyses, subscribed and I hope you do more Radiohead content in the future! Your Airbag video is such a great exploration of a really dense song. I completely agree about the "satisfying-ness" of the snare cross stick.
    On Black Swan, the bass is doing a slide into that high E note both times, and then also sliding out of the second note back down to hit the low D. A bass player would characterize these as a "slide from/to nowhere" -- that is, it's not sliding from one defined note to another, it's sliding from an undefined location below the target note, into the E, and then down from the E to an undefined location (usually roughly a few frets down), which makes a sort of string noisy grace note slur kind of thing. Also, there's some light distortion on the bass which helps to blend the notes together and make you hear more of the slur noise.
    I think on this track, it adds a "struggling to reach" feeling as you described. It also gives me the feeling of an analog machine struggling to start up, like how if you put a needle on a vinyl record and then turn it on, there's that pitch glide while the record gets up to speed.

    The version of Thom singing this solo on the piano is maybe my favorite vocal performance he's ever done - whole new vibe for the song, I ended up preferring/totally hooked on - it brings the gorgeous lyrics to the front as well and is a pure lesson in a true pro singing falsetto at a ludicrously amazing level! Check it out - right with you on Thom (same effect with him on a solo acoustic guitar with "The Clock" and - well so many more) but I have a feeling you may already know!

    Another great video. I do a playlist every year that I call Songs of The Year (not only contemporary but new to me) and Beautiful People went straight on it. It’s looking to be a good year - I’ve already got 8 songs on the playlist.

    Always nice to see someone with musical knowledge dissect songs from Thom Yorke. I think he is truly an artist and the sheer amount of his creativity is sometimes felt overwhelming, the fact that he is now aged more than half century and still creating amazing songs is just mind boggling. His solo projects are all worth listening imo, also got into electronic music because of it. Here are some songs that you may have not heard from Radiohead / Thom Yorke and I think you’ll love it! “Ill Wind” this one is a B-side from AMSP and “YouWouldn’tLikeMeWhenI’mAngry” yes that’s the title. Both I think are just very beautiful and I suggest you hear it alone with headphones. Trust me.
    P.S. Atoms For Peace also very worth checking out if you haven’t. Sorry, just so many good stuff from this dude 😂

    I like how you were early for the Chorus of Suspiria. I always want to jump to that "all is well" a half step early. Not sure why I have so much trouble with that timing. Haha.

    Thanks Ixi, Thom is a genius for sure. Would you be able/willing to help us understand more about “Dawn Chorus”…it’s so achingly beautiful. I know nothing about music theory, but would love to understand how this song is constructed

    5:40 oh my. I was not aware of this album, thank you! I remember singing something like this in the car with friends in the 70s. This is so similar to Achim Reichel's voice on "Die Gruene Reise". Listen to the section starting at 16:00 here: watch?v=1tL6XiCk220
    Suspiria makes me cry every time I listen to it. "Not the News" and Runawayaway are my favorites.
