I was recently watching a documentary about the phenomenon known as Gama Ray bursts and was wondering should we be worried about the potential of the earth being hit by a deadly gamma ray burst from the birth of a blackhole when a super dense star goes hypernova.
I know of the prospect of WR-104 going hypernova might cause this, however given that there's evidence of Gama Ray bursts in the earth's past or gelogocal history causing mass extinctions should we be worried that there's are other stars and much more powerful and larger objects out there in the cosmos that could do the same thing.
And if such an event was headed our way could we do anything to protect ourselves such as going deep underground or under the oceans to avoid the worst of the deadly radiation from such a mega disaster.

I know he said our satellites would pick up the bursts ahead of time, but I don’t really see how if they are travelling at nearly the speed of light.
I feel like we wouldn’t know about it until it blasted us. So we’d have no chance to react.
You can't prevent gamma ray burst impact. Gamma ray burst velocity=light velocity=maximum speed of information. If a gamma ray is directed towards us, we can know only when it hit us.
Yes, satellite can "see" the ray in advance, but the information travels from satellite to us at ray speed, then you can't prevent in this case too. Rip
We can only protect ourselves maybe with a shield of something, but we can't know when a ray will hit us, then this protection must always be active...

It just happened 2.4 billion years ago in 2022. A star that was 40x our sun just gave birth to a new black hole in a one-in -a-lifetime event. NASA sais its a supernova with gamma rays which is rated as the most powerful explosion in the universe. I don't know if the gamma rays are coming towards us or what but God willing it's not.

@@NotKiiro Yes it does exist or else nothing would happen and you would be completely still. But time can be really slow in different volumes in space. Like when you are in space you will not age as fast as compared to on Earth. Also near a black hole time slows down a lot the closer you get.

Such events are really, really rare, it’s estimated that earth will get a strike once every 1.7 billion years. And even a nearby star go off in the few thousand years, we might already have the technology (like a planetary energy shield) to defend against GRBs.
