    *𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆*
    Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of an earlier Ligurian settlement in the 3rd century BC called Luk meaning marsh in which the name Lucca originated) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical centre preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum.
    Lucca was an important city and fortress even in the sixth century, when Narses besieged it for several months in 553. Under the Lombards, it was the seat of a duke who minted his own coins. The Holy Face of Lucca (or Volto Santo), a major relic supposedly carved by Nicodemus, arrived in 742.
    During the 8th-10th centuries Lucca was a center of Jewish life, the community being led by the Kalonymos family (which at some point during this time migrated to Germany to become a major component of proto-Ashkenazic Jewry). Lucca became prosperous through the silk trade that began in the eleventh century, and came to rival the silks of Byzantium.
    During the 10-11th centuries Lucca was the capital of the feudal margraviate of Tuscany, more or less independent but owing nominal allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperor.
    After the death of Matilda of Tuscany, the city began to constitute itself an independent commune with a charter in 1160. For almost 500 years, Lucca remained an independent republic.
    There were many minor provinces in the region between southern Liguria and northern Tuscany dominated by the Malaspina; Tuscany in this time was a part of feudal Europe. Dante’s Divine Comedy includes many references to the great feudal families who had huge jurisdictions with administrative and judicial rights. Dante spent some of his exile in Lucca.
    Lucca had been the second largest Italian city state (after Venice) with a republican constitution ("comune") to remain independent over the centuries.
    In 1805, Lucca was conquered by Napoleon, who installed his sister Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi as "Princess of Lucca".
    Today it is considered one of the most beautiful italian/tuscan city and visited by thousands of tourists every year.

    #1 on my bucket list. I dream this city because my family is from here. I figured out if I use your video and Google Maps Street View, I can walk along with you and have the ability to look around and from above by pausing your video and switching to Street View. It is a blast. My grandparents were both from Via Vecchia Pesciatina, just beyond the Elisa entrance. I pray someday I will be able to afford to go here and smell the smells and hear the voices and meet with my cugini!

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  Рік тому +1

      Dear Vicki, what a nice message you wrote, thank you for sharing it here. Great idea with Google Maps Street View, I never thought of doing that actually; very cool idea! Lucca is just stunning.. it's been a lot of times since I was there, and I always wanted to get back ... then with time, I went around it, and filmed nearby cities and towns.. but still plan to film it again and more in full to show other areas as well. Lucca is just magical. I hope you'll succeed to visit it then and meet with the cugini, and hope that dream could be fullfilled sooner than one expects.
      A big ciao

    Those streets, like the one from the 4:20, the 28:00 or the 1h22:22 mark or so... THIS, to me, is Italy. Calm side streets, that generally lead to some unexpected treasures... these are the places we would talk long walks in when we went to Italy. It makes you feel part of the country, as opposed to being a tourist. And being from Canada, there is ALWAYS something that would catch my eye, simply because it was different from home. A gas counter. A «passo carabile» sign. A great car that doesn't get imported to Canada. A small sandwich shop that would nevertheless have Prosecco on tap (God, I love this country!). An architectural detail. A plaque that I would try to understand. And these covered sidewalks at 10:00 : just like in Padova. This damn pandemic needs to end, so that we can travel and enjoy the world normally again!

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 роки тому

      Dear Hugo, happy you enjoyed this walk. One of my earliest... I maybe had to focus more on the shops and sides! But glad you enjoyed it. But agreed totally with you on the things seen there... it's the little details perhaps which are the most important in a walk... or the "reality" of it.Ohhhh Padova..would love to go there ... one day... if the channel will grow in numbers and I'll be able economically to move more, I'll definitely go. Indeed... we need the situation to be normal again... it's pretty tense over here these last days for many reasons... Wish you a nice week Hugo, and thank you again!

    This town seems to have very little greenery or colorful flowers seen in other places with a few exceptions. Was this simply the area you walked - maybe more of a business area? It has a "big city" vibe -- cement, brick, rock, stucco.
