The name of Silvia was changed to San Gimignano in 450 AD after Bishop Geminianus, the Saint of Modena, intervened to spare......................................

How much beauty can one country have? In Italy, it seems there is always another medieval town over the next hill, where your camera moves, and time stands still. There is such an elegance to Italy, and you're the guy who continually brings it to the world. Grazie.

One of the most beautiful places in the world. I feel priviledged to have had an opportunity to visit this place many years ago. Thank you for giving everyone a chance to experience a little of San Gimignano's magic through your lovely video. :o)

Couldn't agree more Rugose - it was the 4th time for me (this time for a "professional" reason , the other times with girlfriend and friends) and it's always a pleasure... wanted to give it a more unique look and tried this "sunset" settings. Glad it was enjoyed. Wish you a nice Sunday evening and ciao as always

The Drone intro blow my mind away. Look at the towers even in this medieval town. It's just like any Italian town on a Saturday evening close "to dust". People come out as usual and it's traditional. To see people around just makes a town beautiful, especially this one looking so peaceful. I like the people gathering at the panoramic point just to enjoy the view in the evening. Thanks, Riccardo, for another relaxing town in Tuscany.

Dear Esther, nice to see you back and always glad to know you enjoyed the drone intro. I was thinking of creating a new "drone only" video soon... a collection of the past walks' intro... every once in a while I think it's a nice addition to the walking tours. Lots of people indeed, lovely. I waited for visiting the main church but... tourists weren't allowed in that day; one of the downsides of visiting in full summer I suppose. But I am happy that it's now a mix between little "far away" tiny towns (usually very rarely seen by tourists) and famous ones like San Gimignano

I remember watching the film "Tea With Mussolini" and recognizing San Gimignano, because it was one of our stops on a long trip by car from Madrid Spain, to different towns and cities. That's the best way to see Italy, because has very good highways and roads, rest areas. On the way there and back can also experience the same of the Mediterranean south of France. It's a great drive and adventure, and it's not monotonous in any way, the total contrary. Also done the same with our children, and they weren't yet teenagers, but excited to go with us, and very well behaved, could take them everywhere, all museums, historical places and restaurants. With them Venice Rome and more, all the way down to The Amalfi coast. My youngest daughter still had to have her "blanket", but actually hers were her baby pillows. Blanket was her older sister.

What a beautiful message Anai, thank you and thank you for sharing with me and with all of us here such memories..It's those travels and trips that "shape" us as I always thought. What a travel it must have been from Madrid to Amalfi Coast and what memories it could have shaped as well

Obrigado de qualquer forma e que bom que gostou!

Great tour of San Gigminano. Great view of its towers with the drone. They remind me of the Twin Towers in New York.
Midsummer. Many children. Wide and beautiful streets, geometrically decorated with red bricks.
    Neat and much visited town.
    Nice night lighting.
It is noted that " Vernaccia wine inspired poets". That is why Dante Lighieri must have visited San Gimignano . It is demonstrated by the sonorous declamation that Dante himself makes at 28 minutes and 4 seconds of the video. It is noted that is a very stimulating wine. Produces in Dante a magnificent loud voice that produces an echo that is distributed through the alleys of San Gimignano.
    Beautiful sunset at the end.
The filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli filmed " Fragello Sole, Sorella Luna" in San Gimignano en 1972.
Riccardo of the Tyrrhenian Sea he delights us with is videos in 2022.
    Thank you very much.

Dear Juan, I believe everything you wrote I could actually put in the description of this walk...I wanted to capture the "dusk" setting but starting much earlier... in full daylight and turning into the nighttime, compared to other videos. It's a famous town this, and I thougth of adding this little difference. Glad it turned out ok. Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna is an astonishing film... my mother showed it to us (me and my brother) many years ago.. Zeffirelli , a true Toscan... so... Filmed some more nearby Juan, also near Thyrrenian.. But a small sneak peak... search for teh tiny town of "Monticchiello"... I will upload one day... it was AMAZING... an amazing discovery

Thanks for another wonderful walking tour video. Nobody does it better and with style the way you do. ..
Ahh yes.... Good ol' San Gimignano... For years I wanted to see this place and finally I did. In my situation it turned out to be a mixed bag. Now please understand Riccardo, this is not some angry venting. Looking back on it now I can smile about it in amusement...well... sort of.😆
My 'bag' is photography. It's the main motivator for my travelling. I just love going to far away places with strange sounding names and, figuratively speaking, shoot them to pieces with my trusty Canon 5D Mk II. 📷Such shooting hurts no one, and years later I am still enjoying the photos and the memories made in their creation.
So at long last I am in San Gimi, and knowing how mobbed with tourists it can be, I wanted to get up as early as possible and hit the streets while everyone else is either still sleeping or munching on their little Continental breakfast. I had only one day in this hallowed place, unique in all of Tuscany, and I was not about to have my pictures spoiled by guys in cutoffs and their Pittsburgh Steelers jersey. But even this early start would not be enough on this day, of all days. 🙄
So I get to the little piazza seen at the 0:30 point in the video. I had the place all to myself until.... The INSTANT ( And I mean the INSTANT) I raised the camera to my eye I hear this rumbling sound. Before I could click the shutter, into the piazza bursts a mob of polizei on tricycle type motorcycles. Eight, nine, ten of them honking their horns like circus clowns on scooters. They gleefully romped round and round in circles before finally parking their trikes in the way of every possible camera angle.
They jump off and begin group selfies around that little well. My head was about to explode in frustration. 🤯 I would soon find out that the reason they had shown up was that a bicycle 'tour' was passing through that day, and I had unknowingly picked THAT day to be there. I am not sure, but I think it might have been the Giro 'd Italia, of which I had another close encounter on another trip back in 2012. After standing there in exasperation I said to myself 'ENOUGH of this!!', jumped in my car and had a wonderful day in Volterra instead. It seems that in Tuscany there is always an alternative...

Ken, oh happy to see you back... that story was interesting (and funny) also because I experienced something similar there... you see, I didn't want to film it that evening, and I had only a few days in Tuscany... I thought of filming it the morning after, but.... then I realized I could actually even capture the Sunset in San Gimignano and gave it a try... the editing of the night shot was very labour intensive..
Anyway... if you see closely, you see that I filmed inside the church... the morning after (!) as I planned. But, it was the only church I could actually... in the main Duomo they didn't let tourists and cameras in... and in the other churches they were either closed or unaccessible. It's part of the "cons" of famous towns like this... Loved San Gimignano a lot, as it wasn't the first time there anyway... but I feel somehow more attached to the "underdogs", as you well know it... (by they way... do you know Monticchiello?? I filmed it and it was absolutely beautiful... I'll upload one day...)
Anyway, I can "feel" the frustration Ken and at the same time.... as you said, in Tuscany there's really always an alternative indeed.

@@StillWanderer I'm not familiar with Monticchiello, but as one who does like to dig a little deeper for the hidden gems, later in that day I made a brief side trip from Volterra to a little place named Casale di Marittomo. That entire central Italy region is just awash in such places, towns with buildings stacked on a hill like boxes. You really don't need to work hard to unearth them. I remember stopping at a spot that overlooked a rolling valley and counted about eight such towns, some near, some barely visible in the distant haze, and all of them crowned by at least one impressive campanille. I sometimes say that Italy needs to post a sign in all points of entry that reads:: Welcome To Italy. Forget pasta. Hilltop towns are our REAL specialty! 😄

Nice town, but where are the people? Does anybody live in this town or it's just tourists?

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  8 місяців тому

Hi Greg, yup many residents live there as I could see them the day after when it was calmer. Somehow during summer it is "invaded" by tourists and this gives that appearance of a touristic town only, but it's definitely lived by locals
