Montepulciano is a major producer of food and drink. Renowned for its pork, cheese, "pici" pasta, lentils, and honey, it is known worldwide for its wine. Connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile, which should not be confused with varietal wine made from the Montepulciano grape, among Italy's best.
According to legend, it was founded by the Etruscan King Lars Porsena of Chiusi; recent findings prove that a settlement was already in existence in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. In Roman times it was the seat of a garrison guarding the main roads of the area.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it developed as a religious center under the Lombards.
In the 12th century it was repeatedly attacked by the Republic of Siena, which the Poliziani faced with the help of the Perugia and Orvieto, and sometimes Florence, communes. The 14th century was characterized by constant struggles between the local noble families, until the Del Pecora family became rulers of the town.
From 1390, Montepulciano was a loyal ally (and later possession) of Florence and, until the mid-16th century, lived a period of splendour with architects such as Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Baldassarre Peruzzi, Ippolito Scalza and others, building luxurious residences and other edifices here. In 1559, when Siena was conquered by Florence and Montepulciano lost its strategic role, its importance declined.
After the unification of Italy and the drying of the Val di Chiana, the town remained the most important agricultural centre in the area, while the industrial activities moved mostly next to Chiusi, which was nearer to the railroad being built in that period.
A competitive "barrel race through the city" called the "Bravio delle botti" has been held on the last Sunday of August since the 14th Century.

I love the wine from that area.
Montepulciano wine is amazing, I agree with you Anthony
I've been researching Montepulciano since before the pandemic as a second home. This walking tour is thoroughly fantastic! Finally going to see it in 2 weeks and it is much better than I hoped from google maps.
Thank you so much dear Rachel, glad you enjoyed it. Montepulciano is such an iconic town... lucky you to afford a second home there. A kind salute
It's "Volterra" from New Moon! 😂😂😂 You're videos are EVERYTHING. I watch them almost every day and have had the pleasure of your excellent camera work that allows me to get to know Italy up close from the outside, in.
I can only hope to visit while I'm still young enough to enjoy it!
Dear Jo, thank you so much. Very happy to read such words and to know they are appreciated! Truly, Grazie mille as we say. I hope to go back to Tuscany soon too. Wish you a nice Sunday
Excellent. Montepulciano is one of my favorites in Tuscany :)
Thank You Thomas! 🙌 Love the town (and wine I must say) myself too
italia, una opera di arte,,,bellissima.antica,,,,wow,,
🙌🙌
It must be fun for people to see their own doorways and neighborhoods in your videos (I was reading some of the comments).
I was very pleasantly surprised too Sharon)
Lovely... Beautiful shots.
Thanks!
Wow love Italy and love the intro with the drone. I need to get me a drone someday 😆 let's connect🤩
Thank You! Ok 🙌
Luv your stuff. You get a real sense of the place
Thank You!
My airbnb too, up ahead, on the right, same street, house, no apartment! I stayed 15 days there !
Hi Jose, reading comments like these truly is amazing, to recognize places where a person used to live or just tour around in the past. In a video one person even recognized one of his relatives (!)
Thank you! We haven't been able to enjoy our home away from home since Coronavirus and this took the edge off for sure. You even walked right past our apartment, giving us a peek at our overflowing mailbox ;) Thank you again for your commitment to your channel...we enjoy it!
Mike Thank You so much for your kind words. I was amazed to read about the mailbox )) You're lucky - Montepulciano is a dream of a town... I hope we'll be able to travel again soon. I actually hope to visit Tuscany again...it's very very dear to me. Have nice holidays and Happy New Year!
Great job my friend. 😷🙏
Thank You 🙌
Great video, lots of hills hope you had a few glasses of wine after that. 😁
Thanks Mark! Indeed i did! I dined in a small typical place just on the main road and of course took s Montepulciano wine. Amazing day, full Summer
beautiful Toscana
Agreed 100%
@@StillWanderer Umbria is much better ; )
Love Umbria as well! :)
@@ItalianHolidays Maybe but Marche is better than Umbria. in my opinion.
I was also here .... Amazing trip 🔥🔥🔥
Thank You Bong! Montepulciano Is Amazing. Glad you liked it!
Muito bom seu trabalho♥obrigado♥
Obrigado Irene!!
A very beautiful city!
Agreed 🙌
Hermoso!!!
Grazie Maria ✌️
Cidade linda..
Adorei 🥰
Gracias Zulma ❤️🙌
I love your walking tour of my adopted hometown of Montepulciano! I just wish that I could turn the camera towards the shops and trattorias to see what my friends are up to! The door to my apartment is at 17:30.
Wow Mark, glad you enjoyed! And ...envy you for living there. Such a beautiful town Montepulciano Is.... stunning place
Wonderful walk thru Montepulciano. We have been there twice and was there in 2018 for 5 days. I have walked many of those streets and alleys so it was fantastic to revisit them through this video. Molte Grazie :)
Prego Howie! Very glad to read your message! I'm from the area around Rome, but I must say that Tuscany is one of my (still haven't understood yet if *THE* though...) favourite region in Italy. Reasons are several. I hope to post more !
@@StillWanderer Hi - seeing you love Tuscany, please do a walk through Cortona especially up the top of the town in the Poggio region. Ciao Howie
Howie good suggestion actually! I have Cortona on my to-do-list and I'll definitely go there one day. Tuscany is at the moment in full lockdown so I'm concentrating here in Lazio. But I'll visit it for sure. Have a nice week!
grazie,,,,meraviglioso,,,,bellissimo....wow
Grazie Carmina!
Love the video, but I wish you would tell something about the places you are going by, if it's not too much to ask. A bit of history. I was plannning to study Italian in Montapulciano, but after 2015 things changed...I'd love to visit M. Italy is so beautiful. Took a 2 week Trafalgar tour in '89. Not enough. Ciao, mia bella Italia!!
Hi Thereza, Thank You for your comment and glad you enjoyed the video!
If you click "Subtitles ON" you can read some info about the town and the main locations in the video!
I thought about maybe adding also a voice-over narrated story for these towns, but I am still a little bit uncertain how that woule end up.
What do you think?
Montepulciano is indeed stunning... I'll try to visit lesser-known towns in Tuscany again soon, even though now I'm concentrating on Lazio region, where I live. Who knows... if the channels will grow up, I'll be able to afford to travel more.
Thank you for checking up and I hope you enjoy the other walks too. Wish you a nice weekend!
Buona serata e buona settimana!
Was this 'route' pre-planned, or did you just drift around? In other words: would you recommend we exactly we-tract your steps? Will be there in two weeks.
I pre planned the route 🤞 usually I try to study beforehand the path as to not pass through the same paths twice. Montepulciano Is just stunning.... Let me know when there as I can suggest some unique places
@@StillWanderer I'll be there on June 18th, from 9.45 to 12.45, including lunch :-P
I think I'll mostly follow your route, maybe with a few less loops. Still looking for a lunch spot with a great view - do you have an opinion on Osteria Del Borgo's terrace?
I was planning to come to Tuscany too, I need to check!
About the osteria, i didn't personally go there unfortunately, but I ate there at the osteria La Briciola and it was quite great , quality-price was good. But the view there ...nope :/
Are you able to go inside the Piazza Grande? :)
There were some works there but during summer walking in piazza Grande was spectacular!
they say the surname "senna ou sena" is of Italian origin, is this true or not? are there Italians with that surname?
Henrique I personally don't know but surely it sounds Italian, so could be ! Some last names are quite close to that , like Sanna (i know one), so it definitely could be
Monte Cristo
I wish to visit the island of Montecristo one day...
When does the drinking start????
Indeed Charles , after I finished filming I just stopped there near that main square and tasted a Montepulciano just from there.... stunning experience
@@StillWanderer the Trader Joe's in my area has had the wine from Montepulciano/Abruzzo.... I have been enjoying it dreaming about Italy
Watch out Charles, the "Abbruzzo" ones are made in Abruzzo region and not there in Tuscany 😊 Both excellent anyway!
