@@JbfMusicGuitar tbh steve vai tapping techniques are better than Buckethead. Buckethead might be faster. Steve Vai is clean when he taps. Sounds really good.
0:45- You could see it as an Am7add11, but the chordal riff underneath suggest D as the Root. 2:05- If you want to skip straight to how to play the lick.
This is outstanding. Thanks for breaking it down so concisely. You know Vai lives off of the Eventide rack-mount harmonizer and the Fernades Sustainer pickup (with pitch shifting on board).
No problem, thanks for leaving the comment to let me know if was useful! Yeah, when I was looking in to the sound I found stuff about the Eventide rack unit (I think it was on the jemsite forum), although I've also found stuff saying he pretty much uses Axe Fx now- at which point I gave up! :D Didn't know the sustainer had a pitch shifter in it! Thought it could just change the harmonics/overtones, wonder if it's anything like Matt Bellamys whammy pot thing?
No you're first assumption was correct. It sustains the fundamental in one mode, a blend of 2nd/3rd harmonics in 'mix' mode, and the 5th harmonic in, well, 'harmonic' mode lol
Best of luck dude, I'm sure you'll nail it. Tonnnes of gain, getting it to be muscle memory and being as light as possible, while still getting a sound were the backbone for getting this under my fingers! Doubt I could nail it without a few weeks or relearning though!
@@JbfMusicGuitar thank a lot man!! I already got the hang of it but the difficult thing is the sequence. The pattern is totally irregular and it's f**king with the muscle memory. The same thing happened when I tried to learn Waves by Guthrie Govan lol.
This is a brilliant and concise lesson for this part. Thank you so much! However, I tend to prefer doing tapping parts while still holding my pick between my index finger and thumb. This particular section seems to pretty much require that I release my pick. If so, where do I put it and how do I get it back?
Thanks Anish, hope it helped get this lick down! Hmmm, I'd probably keep the pick between my teeth. Just checked a live version and this is what Steve seems to do as well - ua-cam.com/video/JcazWH8Pok0/v-deo.html You can see it poking out the corner of his mouth and around 21 seconds is he grab it out. Other than that you could maybe get a pick holder, or something to keep the pick on the guitar's body? Hope that helps dude, let me know how you get on with it!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Hey man, I found the same clip and yes, he is using his mouth to hold the pick. I tried that, and it's not too hard, but I actually find it easy enough to just use my middle finger on the picking hand to tap instead of the three fingers, with my pick still between my index and thumb. Doesn't really seem to affect my speed, so I think I will keep it doing it my way (mainly for hygiene reasons XD). Steve's way is undoubtedly much cooler though! This video was extremely helpful. Thanks a bunch and keep up the great work!
Hey great video this really helps. But can you please let me know what was the track Steve was playing live using the same technique? The one with the blue guitar.
Cheers, glad you liked it! A really cool technique to have under the fingers! Sure, he plays it as the intro and bridge sections to 'Building The Church'. I have a feeling I put in a live clip from one of his solos (sometime in the 80s, maybe?) where he used to play this lick, it might have been during a David Lee Roth or Alcatraz gig. If you timestamp the clip I'll have a look and see if I can jog my memory!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Hey thanks for replying. I found it finally. Its the song Breakin' The Heart Of The City by Alcatrazz. It's the 85 live version. Thanks for introducing me to the band. I never knew everything that Steve does or probably some new kid does is done by him live way before the kids were born... Superb. Although I have been listening to Vai for 18 years now, the deeper I get into guitars, the more respect I have for the man.
@GuinnessandPizza hey thanks for recommending this one. I was always a Vai fan but never heard his stuff with other bands. Turns out he is way more than the word incredible.
You could play it with the left hand in the normal position..muting with the first and second fingers and tapping with the third and fourth..but I guess it wouldn't look as flashy!?
Totally, although I'd wager it would be harder to play it that way. You can get a pretty good attack doing the Vai way, the little finger taps would be pretty tough; for me anyway! I think I tired doing a similar thing, muting with my 1st finger and taping with my 2nd and 3rd, but again the Vai way just rolled better. And, as you quite rightly point out, looks much flashier, haha! XD
I like it but the notes go by so fast the payoff isn't a mind blowing result for me. He put a lot of effort into one small nugget at the beginning. But then come the variations later. Ooh wee. Great song...just dont want to learn it.
Fyi Steve vai is done, idk what happened to him but I really stopped being impressed when he did that 3 neck mutant "guitar " geez that's lame af,then I saw another video of him dancing while playing, smh,,,really,,,,? Besides hes being punked by people like Max Ostro (whose probably the best fusion player to date) that I've heard. Vai is lame af nowadays has been for decades
Hmm, let's see. A legendary player who has nothing left to prove to so he takes chances with strange compositions and gets into his music to such a degree that he occasionally dances vs a guy who, while technically proficient hasn't yet written anything compelling in the melodic sense and plays almost exclusively in his bedroom (and who incidentally would likely tell you that he worships Steve Vai). Yeah, Steve Vai is a weird guy. Have you not noticed this entire time?

This is something meant to be played by ear!
Amazing
It's a seriously cool lick! Can't think of a player other than Vai who would come up with something like it! 🤘

Great! Thanks a lot!
