"Going hard to port?" No...the ship went hard starboard! Why? But for that hard right it does not hit the pylon. Moreover, where were the dolphins or barriers that buffer the impact? After 1980 and the incident in Tampa where the Sunshine Skyways bridge was brought down by a large tanker ship, bridges everywhere started retroactively placing these buffer columns called "dolphins" around the actual support pylons of the bridge. What has the harbor authority been doing in Baltimore?

The ship lost power and once back up power came on the rudder was locked and the propulsion caused it to veer to the side. Then seconds later the ship started smoking and power went out again so they had no way to counter steer. So they ended up hitting the bridge with no control going at 9 knots.

Hind sight is always 20/20. If the harbor protocol were to keep the 2 tugs assigned to “undock” the Dali engaged until South of the FSK Bridge, there would have been no loss of the bridge. I suspect once the new bridge is built, that will become the new protocol.
I watched an operating ship engineer explain the prop effect from starting a single prop ship engine in reverse. In this instance which according to him that me be the case because of the dark smoke exiting the stack after electrical power loss. Upon start in reverse the prop turns counter clockwise (looking forward from astern the ship) which drives the bow to starboard turning the ship in this case directly into the lone South vertical support member.
In this case reversing the engines and deploying the port forward anchor with little distance between the ship and that major vertical support member was the wrong call. At this point until more information which may be contrary to this operating engineer’s view emerges, I believe this is the best explanation of what happened.

In the scheme of the ocean they were very much near a port, well within land and certainly not in open ocean. My first thought was the same as the original poster, "why weren't they under tug until clear of obstructions?" Like the bridge. I fish for a living. I've had this very ship right next to me. Its enormous and certainly not easily maneuverable.

“The Key Bridge was an attack folks. Don’t listen to the lies being told it wasn’t. I’m former intel. Lived near the bridge when I worked at Fort Meade. After that, 32 years in cybersecurity. Now retired. This was a cyber attack through the ships navigation system. The ship didn’t lose power. The crew shutdown power frantically, twice, to reset the systems to try to thwart the attack. Obviously, that didn’t work. I can’t imagine ship navigation systems are any more secure than the notoriously unsecure ADS-B navigation system used by aircraft. Easy to hack.”

@@ssark9187 maintenance to the ship, nothing to do with the bridge, in the maritime sector shipping companies tend to cut costs including delaying parts and not doing maintenace properly, clearly the ship had blackouts by what was said in the news.

That ship turned to purposefully hit that bridge support. It would have been fine if it carried on in its initial direction. This whole thing stinks.

Engines fire up at 1.26 as evidenced by the funnel smoke, at that point the ship veers towards the support, while the engine is running, don’t see the funnel smoke stop up to the point of contact which suggests the engine was still running and it was a deliberate collision.

shoddy American infrastructure to blame it would seem. As the expert said proper support around the bridge would have avoided this.
Maybe if 🇺🇸 spent less spending billions and billions to 🇺🇦 and 🇮🇱 for war and more on its crumbling infrastructure then this wouldn't have happened!!

As if we don’t have enough clout in the air with the things going in the world I hope no one is seriously injured and thoughts and love with the families that has been affected ❤😢 titanic all over again

The ship lost power and had put out a distress signal. This allowed the bridge to be closed to traffic. Unfortunately there was not enough time to get the maintenance crew off the bridge.
