As a "protestant" who feels very drawn to the Catholic church, I will say that I get the idea that everyone has a different apostalate, and that there should be people who simply focus on the apologetics for Catholicism and not into any of the controversies. That being said, as someone who is on the outside looking in and feels incredibly drawn to the truth of the Catholic faith, the magisterial teaching and tradition, the sacraments, etc, I am also appalled at the problems with the leadership right now, and its people like Matt Fradd who are willing to address those things, and still be unapologetically Catholic, actually make me *more* drawn to the faith, not less. When folks just act like there is no controversy, there are no problems, it turns me off. So thank you, Matt, for finding that great balance of saying, "Im not going to gaslight people; there are problems. But there have *always* been problems because the church is peopled with sinful people and we're still Catholic because it's the church Christ founded". Or, Im paraphrasing there but you know what I mean. :)
Trent is not denying any problems. We all have our focuses. Trent goes to a byzantine catholic church so therefore he is denying the validity of other forms of the mass; this seems to follow the same logic that Trent is denying something just because he doesn't talk about such-and-such topic. Do I think Trent's words on the sinful practices of men inside the hierarchy of the Church could be helpful? Yes, I believe his approach on the matter would be ideal, though I believe it would be best done on another channel so as to not dilute the apologetics channel. Great to see Trent appearing on your site. I liked Trent's idea to stick with apologetics. There are far too many people focussing on Church gossip, disagreement with the Pope's decisions, which is causing division and great confusion and harm to the Faithful. Remember Martin Luther thought he was going to set the Pope right in his day. Look at the result. Approximately 35000 different Protestant splinter groups was the end result and still growing in number. Will these know all Fundamentalists ever learn? John Henry Newman got it. Those very critical Catholics, who sew division and claim, "To Know" must be looked upon with great suspicion. Remember Martin Luther and the disaster he started.
There’s some truth in what you’ve written, but let us remember that a big percentage of the bishops (including the pope) are complicit in covering up huge global child molestation. Most viewers are American, so it’s worth pointing out that the majority of the bishops in the USCCB voted to do nothing as a conference on child molestation (because the pope asked them to vote that way, and it’s obvious some American bishops knew in advance he’d ask that), and then voted against even encouraging the pope to do anything. All basically decent ordinary people know more about whether it’s okay to do nothing than our hierarchy.

Hello Matt and Trent. I wouldn't call myself an articulate apologist nor even a courageous evangelist but I do feel that you guys certainly restock my apologetic arsenal if I am ever backed into a corner.
A few weeks ago, I began to share with one of my children, about my conversion to the Catholic Church. It didn't take long when I heard, "But Dad, the priests are all gay!" I appreciate your reluctance to get involved in these things in a public way, but I'd suggest it's darn near impossible to do much in the way of evangelization with all that is going on within the Church.
@@scottforesman7968 well you can say, “Well, u don’t leave Christ because of Judas Iscariot ( got this from another comment) The church, even in the Bible has had troubles , 1 Timothy was literally written because the church in Rome ( present day Catholic Church) had fallen into disrepair People preaching false doctrine , sinning etc And Saint Paul sent Timothy to go straighten it out Bad people will always be in the Church even though sometimes they are able to make themselves invincible if there are enough strong willed Catholics Jesus Christ assured that the gates of hell will not prevail against His church, He didn’t promise the boat wouldn’t get rocky
I'm sorry, I slow cooked some deer meat and vegetables I had harvested myself and threw them on a bed of rice the other night. And I literally was like "God definitely exists!". Ha.
“If you don’t work, you don’t eat”. I love it and I didn’t know that this concept is in the NT. When I think of yesterday’s gospel (“Martha, Martha…”), while I DO understand its spiritual meaning, I also think it’s one of the gospel passages that would have benefited a lot from just a bit more context, because the way it’s written, every time I read it it sounds like Martha is being scolded while she is the only one doing any work. While Mary is doing nothing and being served, and she is praised, Martha has to shut up, make the croissants and coffees and hurry up about it. Again, I know what the passage is about (with its nuances about the role of women and a rabbi) but most homilies I heard about it miss the mark by a mile and go lazily into the “don’t work too much” message, which is not what Jesus meant.
This reminds me of the “Rest on the Sabbath” arguments. In principle, I understand it means taking time out of the week to praise God and let labor fall away for a bit. The issue is those like the Pharisees (or was it the other group) saying NOTHING can be done on the Sabbath, including miracles and pulling one’s ox out of the mud. Resting is good, but not every rest is equal. I like to curl up with a book on Sundays or cook up some meals, while others find Sunday drives or light jogging restful. So long as we allow our bodies rest and focus on God, it is possible to do something on Sundays without overworking ourselves.
@@jendoe9436 Good point, I agree with you. I’m not sure this is easily inferred from the Mary and Martha story. While other concepts brought forward by Jesus are strong and simple (to understand, not to put in practice!), this one about work and spiritual life is naturally more complex so a bit more context or nuance in writing that passage would have helped a lot.
@Paul I hear you and understand. For me between the NO and TLM, I've personally found the number of saints that attended mass in latin, the liturgy, reverence and just a feeling of being connected to a tradition that developed centuries ago something inspiring. The NO is great too and if that's what inspires someone to become a saint, then I'm happy their attending, but more importantly may God bless them greatly on their journey to sainthood!!
So last year when I was dealing with the idea of coming back to Catholicism (a friend of mine converted), Trent along with Jimmy Akin and of course, Matt helped me through that process and objections I had.
Regarding the feeling of not being ready for apologetics, though we all should try to learn, we should remember God's providence in our own lives. The Lord knows best what we are capable of, both by preparation and by a moment of grace. He sets opportunities for love in your path. That includes guiding people to each other who can help each other in various ways. If you can offer little, the Lord will guide you to people who need little. Or He will give you more to offer on His behalf. To paraphrase St Paul, in my weakness the Lord's strength is revealed. When a fool speaks wisdom, people can witness the divine influence.
1:08:08 In regards to Judas and communion, John 13:27 seems to be an example of what St. Paul meant when he wrote that to take communion unworthily is to eat and drink judgement upon oneself. John writes that Satan entered into Judas after Christ gives him the morsel.
So sad but true and prophesized in the Bible. I am currently 54 and my grandmother passed away when she when I was 17. This is part of my prayer everyday... "Lord show me your goodness in this earth for I have only seen exceeding evil since the death of my grandmother" then I pray psalms 123 " To you I have raised my eyes you who are in throned in the Heavens behold as the eyes of the servant looks upon the hands of his master and a female servant looks upon the hands of her mistress so my eyes are upon the Lord my God until he is gracious to me. Be gracious to me Lord be gracious to me for I have had much more than enough of contempt. My soul has had much more than enough of the scoffing of those who are at ease and with the contempt of the proud." 😢💔 Dear God in remembrance of your mercy please have compassion upon your people.
Hi Matt, I only recently started following your show... and I love it. I will admit I was surprised to hear, today, that you believe more in science than in God. I can understand, sort of. Still enjoying your show and learning a lot...and for me, at least, it's helping strengthen my faith.
My “come to Jesus moment” was hugely formed by depression and mental health issues, hopefully in the future we can see a breakthrough of people who are lonely and depressed turning to Jesus and to His Church.

Trent, that was a great measured response about the SSPX. I don't go there. I don't agree with their stance of not attending the NO if that's what you have. But I agree that basically anyone I've known personally who attends there, they just want a TLM and often that is the only one offered. I know in my diocese, it's the only option especially since the bishop took away the ONE TLM in the entire diocese which covers half the state. 😮💨 It's a hard spot to be in.
Regarding the trads and their desire to say "withdraw. " I think they are principally right in that they are focusing on removing the plank in their own eye first. And I think that a religious life that is focused pursuing Christ first in a personal way, and reflecting that love in charity (if you look at the trad and orthodox communities in America their charity is off the charts) Charity is the best evangelization IMHO. It moves the heart of someone who sees charity and the hearts of those who receive it while the giver of the charity made closer to Christ.
I'd like to hear Trent talk more about capitalism and the problem of usery. I'm not super opposed to capitalism but that feels like the biggest hurdle it has to get over, because the church does condemn usery specifically and that can't be ignored.
Usury is lending money with sinfully high interest rates. Capitalism is a person using his own money to buy equipment and hiring people with his own money to use the equipment to make products for sale. Usury is clearly by definition sinful at all times. Capitalism is neither good or evil. The question is when people do immoral things within the capitalist system. But the same is true for all economic systems. Communism by its own definition is antithetical to Christianity because it explicitly forbids ownership of personal property. The Catholic Church officially promotes increased ownership of property/real estate as a founding principle of human dignity and justice.
@@specialteams28 where do you get the definition of usery only including sinfully high interest rates and what would decide what that rate would be? The reason I'd like to see it hashed out more is to really get to the heart of that and to really face the problem that our current capitalist economy is completely dependent on loans and interest, and couldn't really function without them. Even if they were allowable if the rates were low, I still can't imagine that its ok for our system to be largely based on debt. I say this as someone that believes in a free market.
Hi there I am slowly looking at the Catholic faith and feeling called to convert from Protestant. Where could I find Trent’s book where he can get the profit from me purchasing it? Thank you so much from a young, questioning mind.
QUESTION ALERT/HOPING FOR A RESPONSE: Hi sisters and brothers!! So this is random but I’m really hoping someone might have the answer. I listened to a talk Matt had with someone (idk remember who but I have a feeling it might have been w/ Trent) Matt mentions a website he collaborated with other people on about faith to help guide/inform atheists/agnostics. Does anyone know that website and/or link?
"Because it's true" can't be a reason to make something a dogma. Matthew 11 speaks of the easy yoke and light burden, but demanding belief after belief on matters that aren't material to the gospel weigh that yoke down.
Disappointed to see how both yourself and Trent, who was so open to dialogue with various groups, came down so heavily on the SSPX. So here is my challenge for you. Interview with an SSPX priest such as Fr Robinson to discuss some of the accusations thrown at them, such as schism.
My thought exactly! And taking one clip of a video completely out of context and making a general condemnation on the ground! Not very to Thomistic. Matt brings up one clip he saw in one video of 50 episodes speaking on the crisis in the church, of course he’s going to misunderstand if he is not even going to try and understand the context! No “get to see where the other person is coming from first” there.
So the Church hasn't actually defined how bad exactly a lie is... That explains why it feels like there are as many opinions on this question among priests as there are priests (exaggerating of course).
Trent-I know I’m two years too late, but have you really addressed Chesterton and Belloc and Rerum Novarum on free markets? It puts a lot more sophistication on what you’re offering here.
15:06 Jordan Peterson was the first step to me warming up to Christianity. Took a few more years to actually find evidence to believe it literally and not as "metaphorical wisdom" or something like that that considered it, but it was the first step. I think he should get more credit for that. I'm sure a lot more people than just me had that journey due to his reach.
Hello Matt, I hope you can answer before you go on your "month-without-internet". What's the name of the nun on the shelve? Is that Saint Angela of the Cross? I usually go to mass where nuns devoted to saint Angela of the Cross (of course first devoted to God) live. She was born in Seville (Spain), just 1 hour from where I live. These nuns are amazing and are doing a great job in my hometown. (Maybe it turns out that the nun from that picture is not Saint Angela... 🤣, but well...) Thanks in advance. Sincerely in Christ.
As soon as the priest walk by... I've been to Greece a view times and I've been to Eastern orthodox churches there (partially because it's hard to find a catholic church). So anyway, I noticed that the priests there tend to have these piercing looks in their eyes - almost as if they were looking straight into your soul... A bit creepy actually
Would you please interview Fr. Darragh Connolly from The Soul Sanctuary in Ireland? You can find him streaming daily mass on the Direction for Our Times UA-cam.
Where could I have an extended conversation addressing certain questions and concerns I have? I have sent in questions to Catholic Answers before, and I don't blame them because of the way things are structured, but they often miss the point and have to move on. I need to like sit down with someone, and I'm not sure an average priest would be the most adequate apologist for what I'll be asking.
Sit down with your local Catholic priests anyway. Let him know what your concerns and questions are, and ask if he can recommend somebody if he cannot answer your questions satisfactorily.
I was raised Catholic. My grandmother worked for Gonzaga University specifically with men studying to be priests. We both agree catholic priests should be allowed to marry.
I am a southern baptist who is inevitably converting to Catholicism. One thing i am having a hard time wrapping my head around is why the emphasis on Mary. I confess she is the mother of God but i dont really get why there is such an emphasis of her. Why is that?
Also, as a simple layperson, I’d say you have to look at the Old Testament a lot to see the reason for the emphasis on Mary- the role of the Queen Mother, Eve, The Ark of the Covenant are just some of the roles that come into play when it comes to Mary.
I think you may find Dr Brant Pitre’s talks on Mary to be helpful! I converted to Catholicism from atheism and had the same question. Typology is super interesting.
I will just add, she is the ultimate and best Jewish awaiter of the Messiah, and the best and prototypical (first) disciple of the Messiah. Meditating on the way Christ united Himself to her nature, reveals how He wishes to be United to ours; while no two humans are the same, her destiny and glory are ours in a way.
Because numerous marian apparitions took place all over the world. So the church created the marian dogma that Mary is keeping an eye on the church she is protecting the church.....
A lot or quite a few people could talk about church controversy but Trent has fascinating learning to share. I'm not Catholic or even religious but love the arguments and history and thinking. Forgive me, but he would be wasted on that gossipy stuff. Mind you, your present Pope drives me nuts at times! As a person of traditional values I really wish he'd be a bit more, er, Catholic at times, so I appreciate the debate on that side too. I just think Trent is more valuable for you and for us all (because Catholicism is potentially a bulwark for Western civilisation) doing as he does.
I was thinking of going door to door too! But yesterday on Catholic Radio someone said Mass and Communion is not how to introduce people to the Catholic faith. They can't participate in Communion and during Mass you really can't explain or talk or answer questions while in situ. Where do you take people.
I don't go to TLM for silence. 80% of the congregation is younger than 16, and most of those are below 10. Glad you appreciate the Eastern Rite, though
Standard Oil and AT&T didnt stop being monopolies because of the free market but because they were broken up by the government. Not sure if trent doesnt know that or if it was a slip of the tongue
Saying that the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus were step siblings from a previous marriage of Joseph is just wrong. That would mean then that Joseph wasn't "most chaste" as we refer to him and it also implies that Mary would've had to act as mother to other children aside from Jesus, which would then demean her stature as Queen of Heaven and having a unique connection to Jesus. Plus, in the passage where Jesus is 12 and stays at the temple the author mentions nothing about siblings, just saying Joseph and Mary were travelling with family and friends and the two of them went back to look for Jesus. It is the most likely case that the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus were cousins, like John the Baptist was. It is also a very likely possibility that it simply means spiritual brothers and sisters, which is to say disciples and close friends. Both of those possibilities are far more likely and more fitting to Scripture and teaching than Jesus having step siblings.
the 'sensational side' are not the Critics (I'd guess you're talking about Church Militant, Lifesite, Timothy Gordon, etc) but are in fact those in leadership of the Church. THEY are causing division and scandal. I thank God for these godly critics. It takes courage to stand up and speak the truth. And there's almost always a price for doing so. (I spent 30 years in ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. I fought against liberalism in that communion most of that time. The price was quite high. Stress, anxiety, people in the parish gathering together in secret meetings planning to oust you, Bishops who would stand with them and NOT you, etc etc). There is a place for apologetics. But right now we have very corrupt leadership, Satan's minions, who are hell-bent on destroying the Church. That is where the 'front' is.
Priests can’t deny communion to someone in private sin, only public sin. But neither an individual in personal or private sin should take communion. This is why Judas received communion despite his private sin and why that was wrong of him to do so

Then you are building a human relationship and putting generosity, kindness, patience, love in practice. Then you are demonstrating what it is to _be_ a Christian in the world.
Hello Matt and Trent. I wouldn't call myself an articulate apologist nor even a courageous evangelist but I do feel that you guys certainly restock my apologetic arsenal if I am ever backed into a corner.
Back and forth role play was brilliant.
Thank you for continuing to do great interviews. They are so good. I would love it if you could interview Benjamin Wiker. He is a favorite of mine.
How did you respond?
@@claymcdermott718 I stopped talking
Impossible for us maybe, but we're not the ones who really evangelise....

The church, even in the Bible has had troubles , 1 Timothy was literally written because the church in Rome ( present day Catholic Church) had fallen into disrepair
People preaching false doctrine , sinning etc
And Saint Paul sent Timothy to go straighten it out
Bad people will always be in the Church even though sometimes they are able to make themselves invincible if there are enough strong willed Catholics
Jesus Christ assured that the gates of hell will not prevail against His church, He didn’t promise the boat wouldn’t get rocky
I'm sorry, I slow cooked some deer meat and vegetables I had harvested myself and threw them on a bed of rice the other night. And I literally was like "God definitely exists!". Ha.
What a wonderful podcast!

"No work, no eat" is a concept from Mahayana Buddhism.
I desire a video with Bishop Barron, Fr Casey, Trent Horn, and Matt Fradd.
Yes!!
It's a shame Matt never did anything with Fr. Casey when they were both in Georgia.
1:38 "this is A grade content, for sure" immediately followed by the most out of focus shot I've ever seen 😂
Next up, Dr. Taylor Marshall reunites with Tim Gordon, politely discussing their differences and hug it out at the end.
I actually lulled
@Paul Could you explain to me why that’s the case? I’ve never watched any of Dr. Marshall’s videos, but I’ve always found his headlines off-putting.
@Paul And yours is the attitude that gives me hope in traditionals. ;)
Love the Latin Mass but often feel off put by the attitude of some radtrads.
I wish this would happen. 👍
So last year when I was dealing with the idea of coming back to Catholicism (a friend of mine converted), Trent along with Jimmy Akin and of course, Matt helped me through that process and objections I had.
The role play thing was really a trip. I was thinking someone would overhear me watching and think Matt went full atheist on us.

In regards to Judas and communion, John 13:27 seems to be an example of what St.
That track at the end really makes me bob my head! It's tight/dope/wicked I don't know what kids nowadays say!
Hi Matt, I only recently started following your show... and I love it. I will admit I was surprised to hear, today, that you believe more in science than in God. I can understand, sort of. I guess because of the guests I've seen on your show and your conversations with them I was taken aback by the comment. Still enjoying your show and learning a lot...and for me, at least, it's helping strengthen my faith.
Debbie, just wanted to make sure you knew Matt was pretending to be an atheist and just role playing. He is a devout Christian.

I think they are principally right in that they are focusing on removing the plank in their own eye first.

Well, I thought I was going to get something done this evening....
"There are people in your neighborhood who don't know Jesus." love that attitude of staying away from church drama and sticking to the basics
Thanks much for this video..Trent Horn is special..

I listened to a talk Matt had with someone (idk remember who but I have a feeling it might have been w/ Trent)

"Because it's true" can't be a reason to make something a dogma. Matthew 11 speaks of the easy yoke and light burden, but demanding belief after belief on matters that aren't material to the gospel weigh that yoke down.
I'd like to see some of the guys at The Meaning of Catholic on the show or maybe some protestants like Paul Vander Klay or Sean McDowell
Thought I forgot my glasses at 3:46 and I don't wear glasses.
You said "g'day"...now I believe you're an Aussie!!!! :-) Well, I believed you but now you've proved it. :-)
I'm SO JEALOUS that my parents get to see y'all this weekend, but they're getting (totally non-creepy) pictures for me ;)
What is the Truth, if not speaking in Love.

🤣, but well...)
Thanks in advance.

@pintswithaquinas please have Marcus Peter on your show! He was on the Journey Home and is electrifying!
How can I reach Trent Horn? I tried to send an email through his website and it seemingly never reached him.
I guess it's easier to talk to Mom.
More churches should have Young adults groups. Just spend time being their friends & conversing with them will go a long way.
Controversial opinion: Separation of Business and State is more important than the separation of Church and State.
I don't go to TLM for silence. 80% of the congregation is younger than 16, and most of those are below 10. Glad you appreciate the Eastern Rite, though

Hey I'm from new Zealand, capital of global wokeism
the 'sensational side' are not the Critics (I'd guess you're talking about Church Militant, Lifesite, Timothy Gordon, etc) but are in fact those in leadership of the Church.
This is why Judas received communion despite his private sin and why that was wrong of him to do so
There is no need for " Salvation "!
