If you were around for secondlife in 2004-2006 or so, you would know we had more then than we have now, still. The only difference is the hardware limited simultaneous people per zone (60), but crossing zones was seemless. There was no VR. There was a full economy. USD to in game currency and back out. people made millions selling virtual crap. I knew someone that did this with virtual land. YOu could script anything, make games inside the game, and it was not limited like minecraft's blocks. You could twist primitives into meshes of any shapes. Avatars looked better than the ones on VR chat. We missed an opportunity. The company linden labs, the CEO was kind of a dolt. I spoke to him a few times. He didn't understand what he had. If SL didn't become a joke because of bad management, the developers were doing miracles for the time period. SL came out right before the explosion of load balancing cloud systems. They were doing it themselves.

I find your excitement about the "Metaverse" very adorable. The disconnect from reality is dazzling.
In no way, shape or form will theree EVER be a hyper-connected platform which supports a majority of applications and allows you to seamlessly transfer them from one application to the other. Thats because applications are self contained, and there is no universal standard as to how things like items, cosmetics, avatars and so on are handled.
Creating such a platform would be an absolute gong-show of incompatibilities, overhead and disputes over things like item properties.
Its the age old problem of Standards:
*There are 14 different and competing standards for X*

In 1903 a bank refused to lend to Henry Ford saying "The horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty-a fad."
What I find amazing is we are living in the most innovative time in human existence, people over 35-40 can remember having o cell phones, no internet, and then dial-up when it came out where you were limited to how long you could be online each day! Set TV schedules, video cassettes and having to go to cinema or video store to see a film you wanted instead of immediate availability, driverless cars, digital cameras instead of having to send photos away to be developed, etc etc and yet so many seem to still be skeptical about this Metaverse.
One point I'd make is that it's not M'soft vs F'book, it's M'soft AND F'book, and many other companies all working on the same idea.
Think of other industries online like social media sites, games makers, game console makers, cell phone makers, PC makers, operating systems. It's almost never one company owning all the pie so if you think of it that way, it's pretty risky betting against the Meaverse.

The data in games are generated by the game, a server, other players, etc. Nothing new. Even Mixed Reality on Windows allows you to plug in 'smart' meters, televisions and other home appliances, so the television decodes the signal from your provider and feeds the screen output to your computer. Again, nothing new. In business, VR is used to design, develop, build your own workstation just the way you like it without it requiring it buying new furniture or being limited by building size, greatly increasing the production value per person. Again, nothing new (and not something you might want to plug into a metaverse, especially if it's also connected to your actual production machinery or finances). What is new is the implementation of these 3 into 1 virtual environment, both off- and online. The principal has been explored for decades in games (within games within games), movies, books, developer showcases, etc. It's just the implementation that is beginning to take shape, but it is still a LOOOONG way off before we get to that point where most people work with VR, AR or similar / combined technology. Just think about, during the CoVID pandemic, how many businesses allow and implement working from home. That alone already is a huge issue, talking to others with a webcam that not everybody has, through a microphone that not everybody has, over a stable internet connection that not everybody has (especially the US, or so I hear 😁). This is not going to happen anytime soon 😉

If you think of Ready Player One, the appeal is being something else for a few hours. That does happen with games, but the main character is you now, more than ever. If they figure out VR properly we will have completely immersing worlds in a matter of decades. I have hundreds of games and am just bored when I scroll through my library, even with the many that I haven't even touched. It's too separate from me. I'm at a point where I want to BE those things. I think that idea will be appealing to many. Doesn't make it right or wrong, just a possibility that is perhaps more enticing than another. Why is D&D more appealing than a video game? Even the ones without any visuals? To many It's because of the immersion.

Exactly, I keep telling people that barely anyone solely plays one game for long periods. They move from game to game, so if there are constantly games that allow you to play to earn then they will skip to the next best thing. Play to earn is the only reason people may stay in a game when they dont want to really play it but it pays, however if a new one turns up that is better but pays slightly less they will go where the fun is. Also people have been talking about "life like" graphics for years and we still arent anywhere close to real life. For what reason sitting with a VR headset on for long periods is an awful experience. I had a PSVR and after the intial fun I had which lasted for only about half a day, I couldnt play it because the combination of unclear graphics and motion which isnt normal for the mind to experience made me not want to play it. I think we are a at least 20 years away from really life like graphics but I may be wrong. Ever new gaming upgrade is better but its just slightly better compared to what came before, there is never a massive jump in graphics.

So a vr Social network or chat is actually a lot more personal and "physical" than what we have now that is basically text, voice or video.
This is due to the parts of your brains that are in charge of social interaction working better in a space the brain mistakes to be physicial even if it isnt than when seeing a flat screen, that a big part of your social system doesnt work correctly.

MS has a lot of software presence. Meta said they would support domain servers, but MS certainly has more experience in this area and is in a better position to ensure better integration and that is less work for IT who makes recommendations.
Remote employees are not going to be clambering for virtual meetings that they would rather be emails. However management wants to manage and VR can help. The employee wants higher freedom, higher pay and lower workloads, but management wants the opposite, and they make the decisions. It's a lot easier to manage when you can go into a person's space. Email tag and zoom is like cat wrangling.
We will see who offers the better value proposition for remote management, remote team building, and ecosystem. The last one favors MS big time. I do hear that there is indecisiveness at MS on basic things like will they be putting out the hardware or just the software.

Facebook strategy is not even game creation or new software, Facebook strategy is to be the gate keeper and entrance into the metaverse, most definitely, there will de endless creator community and Facebook can’t at this point compete with that so instead of competing with something I don’t dominate or cant realistically dominate, why don’t i compete with what I actually have and I can realistically own…and since Facebook already dominates the social media space, why not just migrate it from web 2 to web 3 and make people spend twice the amount they already are spending and enter the metaverse using the best vr gadget which would be owned and probably even trademarked by Facebook???

How does it improve this or make a similar metric better?

I think a good example would be teleportation. Imagine a digital copy of the world where you can jump around easily/instantly, not just page to page but actual immersive environments. Imagine how that would change home touring where you open a door and your looking at another potential house 30 km away from the first one. Or window shopping a digital mall where you can “filter” which stores you actually care about or teleporting to the store you’re actually interested in. Imagine going to work as just walking through another door in the house. Imagine browser tabs as just a stack of files on the desk next to you, tab groups are now just a separate stack.
Humans are naturally three dimensional creatures. I think the “meta verse” would break all the physical barriers you would normally encounter in a physical world. Whether that’s a good or bad thing for the future of humanity, that’s a whole other topic.

VR allows applications that are currently unthinkable.
For example you could have your chinese-learning study group in a virtual bar, where you interact directly with other learners.
An AI teacher could teach you how to fly a Lockheed Martin F-35, without any risk of damaging a real plane, but with enough realizm that you could actually fly that plane in real life.
There could be VR hookup portals, VR prostitution, VR dating, VR porn, VR AI-Sex portals where you'd have near-real virtual sex.
You could learn to drive a car in VR space.
You could have sessions with a doctor or psychiatrist online.
You could have 3d-design-applications, where you really interact with the thing you're building.
You could do all your studies in VR, providing you all the "physical" tools you need. Need a Raspberry PI? a 3d Printer? a CNC machine? a laser? That all can be simulated in VR.
You could (learn to) do art in VR, without needing any material whatsoever.
Now a metaverse is not really required for all these applications, more advanced VR is enough for that.
But facebook wants your data, and if VR applications can be built very easily on facebooks metaverse, other companies might decide to build their VR applications for that platform, which will result in more data for facebook, but also better and cheaper VR applications from other companies.

It's an interesting viewpoint you have on this as it would seem as if maybe you're holding the two companies to a singular goal of dominance and what that dominance translates to in the metaverse. It's just my opinion and varying perspective that would venture to say, Meta is more focused on dominating delivery and adoption of AR in the sense of devices and how we consume content of the future. While Microsoft might have a gaming marketing approach and it still remains to be seen how the Metaverse will evolve and eventually gain mass adoption, the difference that needs to be noted and addressed, at least from my point of view, is that the two aren't actually competing per se. Whereas in an oversimplified explanation, Facebook is an ads-based company, where its greatest source of revenue is their ad network which gets its value from the social network platform and user data it collects to appeal to advertisers; while Microsoft, might also have its hands in it's own search engine and ad company or whatnot, but with it's Xbox line and acquisition of gaming studios, it's goal for revenue might be arguably about software sales, which shouldn't be surprising. You have a software company trying to dominate the metaverse in gaming sales while Facebook might be trying to dominate the metaverse by being the go to device provider for entry into the metaverse so that similar to how Google collects user date from it's use as a search engine, the use of Meta's devices to access the Metaverse will provide user data for Facebook to, in the future, retake its position in the advertising space by being able to 'control the billboard' everyone is driving by, sort of speak. So while Microsoft might outsell its gaming services or game downloads, Meta will be the one learning user preference and pushing the sales of games it learns that the users enjoys most in trying to keep users plugged into the Metaverse. So they're not going to be killing each other, if anything they'll be like 2 developing countries that will eventually get involved in global trade with one another where one is a nation of gamers and enterprise users while the other is a nation of common people that might use AR/VR casually and adopting AR/VR as a result of the growing popularity lead by the gamer/enterprise "nation".
