How to test the exhaust camshaft position sensor on a 2001 - 2005 BMW 3 Series (E46) with an M54 engine. The vehicle had a P0369 stored. For more information on Bentley Publishers line of BMW technical manuals, visit www.bentleypubl...
Thank you to our friends at Autologic for the use of the Autologic BMW scan tool. www.autologic.us
This was the only video that was clear and simple enough to actually test my sensor on a '97 C230 Benz. Although vehicle runs great...getting fault code P0341 'camshaft position error'. After this video...definately not my sensor.
Le Bentley c'est la bible auto pour BMW, très bien ... !!!
Firstly great video, simple and concise.
I have a 2005 Z4. When I measure between terminals 2 and 3 of the sensor, the meter reads 12v. Do you know if the voltages vary between different models?
Hi. My signal reference voltage is 12V. Whats mean that? Is it problem or no? I have no spark at all. Thanks
Thank you very much for your video....I rate high
superb video.
very helpfull
thanks
truly helpful

Is the sensor connected to this harness is: bmw 12 14 7 518 628 is it the same on e90 318i 2006 ?!
hi..can u make video on how to change the Ambient Temp sensor and the refrigerant pressure sensor...if you can thanx
Tested the cam sensor and for half of the rotation it was 5v and other half 0v. From my logic thats how it should work aswell, because when you watch the camshaft position reference plate on the camshaft itself then half of it has a outward edge and the other half not. How should it only provide 2 temporary pulses instead of it working at 0v for one half of the whole rotation and 5v for the other? Commenting on a 10 year old video may not prove much result but worth a try.
Probably because it is the CHANGE in magnetic flux density which induces the emf in the sensor ( voltage)
How are you're getting your 12 v and signal 5 v with the connector pulled out of the connector on the car?
thanks..
Hi, are the voltage values the same for the intake side. Thanks
Can anyone explain why I should be seeing two pulses per crankshaft revolution? I thought that the cam rotated once for every two crankshaft revolutions. I have very limited experience and I was assuming the cam sensor triggers on each revolution of the cam. If I've got this right in my head, two pulses per crank revolution would suggest the sensor is triggered with every 90 degrees of cam rotation.
i have p0340 tested intake and sensor seems okay. tested exhaust as in video doesn't show anything. could p0340 be related to exhaust side also? i disconnect both of them and started car without problem or EML no check light on dash. i`m lost.. :D and inside exhaust side connector was some oil cleaned everything gonna check letter or it's coming true sensor.
hi, i have a bmw 2003 e46, i have codes p0012 + p0341, i am replacing both camshaft position sensors, but my question is do they need to be set by the diagnostics thing.
What if I am getting 0V in the sensor reference signal? is the 5V supply an ecu supplied voltage ?. I changed the sensor with a new one, but keep getting the same fault code returned 2a63. Seems to me the sensor is never getting the 5V signal it needs to work with. Doe anyone have a pin-out of the ecu as this is clearly not a cam sensor fault.
+ZxRx7 similar problem with my int & ex cam sensor, i am getting 12V on signal ref, my engine is N46, did you solve the problem?
Hi, I did check the signal wire an I got 10.8 instead of the 5 that you got. Is it normal. What does that figure suggest? Thanks.
rabtandoh did you solve the problem?
My car has no fire. doearning.com/?id=2846 2002 318ti: I was told it would be a faulty crank sensor so I changed it and still, it wouldn't start. Pulled from scanner (p0341) could it be cam sensor causing no spark ?
My Signal reference voltage is 12v. what does this mean?
Hello plz I need help I don't have. Idea what's the problem with my car I get today this. Code bmw 2002 p0365 what's that mane plz someone can hello say something ????????
I have a 2003 bmw e46 sedan..when i drive it for extended time, especially on hot days-(summer time) shut the car off for at lease 5mins then try2 start it back up again. it wont start! the temp needle jumps into the red. as if the car was overheating, it locks-up, nd wont start un-till the engine cool's off again, the needle never goes into the red zone while im driving thought, only when i stop and then shut the car off ive been struggling with this problem for 2yrs now with this car
i know this is old but were you able to fix this problem? I am having this problem right now.
Hello,
I have E39 2002 V6. Can I use other BMW serieses exhaust camshaft position sensor to my car
Thanks

Hello - Your engine is a straight six cylinder. Many engines are shared between series. Your engine is the "M54". A sensor from another M54 engine, say from a similar year 3 series, will work.
Hi plz can help me for p1397 ?????
I got 0.07 for my ground. ???
like
good testing but not always valid,by this methods you just can check if sensor is totaly dead, but fot intermitent failures on hot, og signal drops or any glitches by this tests you wont find it. osciloscope is the key.
Hustler LT Great point. Spot on advice!
Very dangerous to turn the engine with the ignition on IMOBILISE THE ENGINE FIRST
I got a problem with my 01 530i, it has low power bellow 3k and exhaust vanos faults. I replaced solenoid, did Vanos seals, PCV and still no results. Only thing that has worked is when I blip the throttle on startup that very second engine starts it all works fine and I got tons of power from low end! Could it be faulty camshaft sensor that throws no faults?? Thanks!
I didn't resolve my issue yet but so far everything points to a camshaft or crankshaft position sensors...
Have you tried blipping the throttle on startup and do you feel any difference?
@@urosb82 Having the same issue on my '11 550i. Tuned in to see what the resolve is.
