You can debate if the game was better then or now, I don’t really care. Those are the players I grew up watching and idolizing, so to me it was a lot more fun to watch then.
They used to call them out if the 2nd baseman was in "the neighborhood" of the bag. Sometimes they wouldn't even touch the bag during a double play and it was always an out.
Molitor wasn’t a dirty player. However that slide was most likely intentional. Not to injure but to break up the play. I have no problem with Henke giving him a hello pitch. As a Blue Jay fan this is amusing. Loved Henke and Molitor and Manny Lee who left the Jays.
The announcers are hilarious. It's all just because he's trying to get in the throwing lane. That's why he makes zero effort to slide into the bag or even touch it until he's taken out the SS's legs. lol
That’s the old school way of sending a message, not trying to hurt the player and defending your teammate. Nobody got in a fight, no suspensions, no umpire giving a warning. You let the players settle it and it’s over in one pitch.
Exactly. I get why Jon Miller and Joe Morgan were saying but Molitor made zero effort to reach the bag. He couldn't see the throw so he assumed he was going to be out and slide straight into the fielder. Bush league. If he slide into the base he actually might have made it.
Paul Molitor was one of the very few best pure hitters EVER!!!! It is sad how quickly professional sports leaugues wash their hands on past legends!!!! We almost never hear of most players ever again after they retire
Henke was a former Blue Jay and had pinpoint control. That being said, I think Henke deliberately threw NEAR his head, but had such control he knew he wouldn't hit him. So he made his point without actually trying to bean Molitor.
@@Landrew1208 Yes, Paul Molitor was incredible. Played almost every position on the field and would hit around .330 with doubles, triples, and homers! Made that great Brewer team a memorable club (and I grew up in Detroit, but in that old American League East, we'd face them often).
Why, it wasn’t against the rules and he was still able to reach the bag with his hand. It was a baserunner’s job to to that, same as taking a lead on third base in foul territory and getting back to the bag after the pitch in the baseline to block the catcher’s throw
I don't believe that Molitor was trying to hurt him, but Tom's just protecting his teammate, just like he did when he was with the Blue Jays. I've met both Henke and Molitor, and they were both class acts.
Toronto fans should sympathize - in 1987 Detroit’s Bill Madlock slide wide and took out Toronto’s Tony Fernandez. Fernandez was out for the rest of the season and Detroit won the AL East on the last day of the season.
On first viewing, I thought this was a reckless, dirty slide. But after listening to Joe Morgan go through his explanation, I had to reverse my opinion. I always appreciated Morgan's work in unraveling aspects of the game an ordinary announcer wouldn't pick up.
Molly wasn't a dirty player, that's true, but that was a take-out slide, very intentional. (I don't have a lot of respect for Gaston, OTOH.) Jon Miller and Joe Morgan call a good game, but I think they were going more on reputation rather than current events.
Molitor absolutely did that with intent, tho it was clean, bit with intent, spikes stayed very low, and he did not go for his knees!!! Henke answered back by buzzing Molly's head! That's how the game was played and policed! He could have just decided to drill Molly! Maybe Molly charges! Most likely this ended right then and there! I miss the way baseball used to be played! All the genius commenters on here pontificating about how much they miss old school baseball, when it was played "the right way." As if people have ever STOPPED saying that.
@geoffoldread7684 I don't recall which old-timer said it (in The Glory of Their Times) but it was in reference to the pampered sissies of the 1960s- "Men were men in my day. They're not men any more".

Neither seemed like the type?….watched video, and had to admit I forgot all about Henke going to Texas, to me me he was and always will be a Jay. He was an absolute ace for the Jays, and Molitor had some super years with Toronto.
Tom Henke went out at the very top of his game. He said that watching his children grow up became more important to him at that point in his life. It’s admirable.
The funny thing is, if Molitor would of slide to the base, he would be safe. Btw, it was a dirty slide. When you don't even go for the bag, you know it was dirty.
I never knew Molitor to be dirty, but that was definitely a dirty slide. The art of throwing inside with control is a lost art these days. You have pitchers throwing as hard as ever and trying to throw even harder without having a great idea of where it’s going. Good old fashioned playing just over the line of what’s “clean” baseball. Personally, if you’re going to throw at a guy I would rather see the hitter get hit in the back. It won’t necessarily harm him long term, but he will have a welt for days.
Henke threw some mean fastballs from what I remember. I’m sure Molitor got the message that what he did wasn’t cool. It’s just baseball. You have to protect your team members.
First year that Henke was not a Blue Jay, interesting to see his former teammates yelling at him. Molitor of course was a Brewer the year before so never a teammate of Henke but in the same division for year. Would tend to agree with traderduke that it was intentional but Henke also never intended to hit Molitor.

He was the world series MVP for us that year...lol. It was also the only time in American league history that 3 team mates finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the batting title race. John Olerud was 1st with .363, Molitor was 2nd with .332 and Alomar 3rd with .326
When he saw that he was hurt, he could have stuck around to communicate it wasn’t intentional. The fact that he looks like he couldn’t care less made it so much worse.
Considering Henke won a world series one year earlier with Molitor and the Jays, I don't think he was aiming to hurt him, he was just trying to keep him honest😅😅. The Jays would win that year as well! Then baseball went on strike and nobody cared anymore when it finally came back, Then it was all about steroids and homerun derbies.
@ObscureBalls oh right. I just remember him being such an integral part of the Blue Jays winning the world series in 93 I forgot he was only there for one year.

They used to call them out if the 2nd baseman was in "the neighborhood" of the bag. Sometimes they wouldn't even touch the bag during a double play and it was always an out.
@blackcrowe318 this wasn't a neighborhood play though, neighborhood play is only in effect on a force. He still would have to apply the tag

“break up the play” refers to a double play situation. I mostly liked Molitor as a player but that was a dirty slide.
Respectfully, most likely intentional seems like an understatement

Eh, debatable...I think he was trying to make as interfering of a play as possible, but there's no way he was deliberately trying to hurt the guy
I like how Henke just came strolling in towards home plate, no biggie. Molitor wanted no part of him.
Tom Henke might be the best MLB example of a huge player making himself less intimidating by wearing glasses 😂
