Once Upon a Time was consistently a ridiculous show that often put its own clever twists on Fairy Tale and Disney Stories, but when Elsa and Anna from Frozen came to town, it felt much more like an ad than a continuation of the TV Show. In this non-canon, live action sequel to Frozen, the two sisters meet their aunt, Elsa's Public Domain Counterpart, The Snow Queen.

The Frozen characters being the only one keeping their bright cartoony outfits is just so jarring
Makes it a little too blatant than having this characters in the show was just a shameless publicity stunt to ride in the Frozen craze of the time and bring as much as possible of that fandom into their audience. Dont think it would have changed much to make their outfits colors more opaque to fit better into the world they were dropping them into, but i guess that was too risky to whoever came with this idea.
Right?? Everyone else has outfits that slightly resemble their movie selves, and these guys are just cosplaying
@@pedrovallefin8406 I don’t know, if I was a big frozen fan I’d be so disappointed they didn’t make some effort on alternating their outfits
@@genericname2747 that's because they weren' based on disney movies in the beggining, it was just fairytales, that's why there are so many character that aren't in any disney movies (the closest thing we had was Belle's outfits). The Disney properties came in with the Peter Pan storyline, went away with the Zelena plot, sinze Oz is not a disney thing, and then they just dived down again and forever after season 4
Ik!
I swear, if this show kept going, Sora, Riku, and Kairi would have become protagonists.
That would be crazy!
tbf Kairi would probably get benched, as is tradition for KH ladies.
that said....the sheer number of possible KH-specific characters is enough to fill the whole roster and then some, with plenty of soap opera level twists baked in....
maybe they should've kept going, it would've been great to see some real human actor try to do a Xehanort speech.
Would love to have seen an Aqua cosplayer walk into frame only to immdietely fall down and never get back up
Regina goes evil again for 2 episodes like she does every season and pulls out Sora's heart and he turns into a heartless and gets saved by Kairi's true love's kiss. That checks out for a once upon a time plot
I would have been down to see an encanto season tbh
So what I'm getting from these videos is that Once Upon a Time is just adult Descendants
"What if Disney but everyone is a manipulative backstabbing liar?"
So again: Adult Descendants.
@@septiquaddoubleyou4019 lmao descendants came out 5 years after once so more like Descendants is a kidded down version of Once.

Pretty much but without the dance numbers.
So when the Wicked Witch of the West shapeshifted into Maid Marion and conceived a child with Robin Hood... that's rape, right? We're all in agreement that was rape? Everyone was like "That crafty witch, she's one to look out for." I was like, "She's a rapist."
I thought that was obvious
That was so uncomfortable. And then they trying to redeem her, because now she's a mom. Horrible
Omg I forgot she and Regina were sisters. And The Wicked witch slept with Regina's bf lol
@@ForrestFox626 Obvious to everyone watching the media, obvious to none of the characters *in* the media.
@NeonPink-lj9qq Oh yeah! Classic Regina antics.
@NeonPink-lj9qq I remember, think about it every time I think of this show. I choose to retcon it out because it's so close to the beginning, and I just can't go along with the show if she's that kind of person. The wicked witch stays a witch in my opinion, because I feel like the show never successfully pretended that she was forgiven for her crap, everyone just tolerated her to different degrees, so I could continue to hate her and watch the show. She murdered Marion and took her place and committed r*pe by deception with the man whose wife she murdered, and had a baby with him, and then toted that baby around to get sympathy.
I was hoping she'd redeem herself by dying and Regina could raise Robin's baby.
Part of me is still in genuine disbelief that Disney actually did something like this, it’s just so freaking wild.

Frozen fever was such a thing that at the time the preschool I worked at had to ban “Let It Go,” because if anyone started singing it, the entire classroom would start singing and dancing too, and it would take a half-hour at least to get everyone back on track.

"And I dont need to explain to you that Peter Pan is Rumpelstilskin's dad" actually Billiam.....yes we would
*deep breath* Peter Pan was a coward and narcissistic man called Malcom which I only know bc Im reading the wiki to fill up gaps I also didn’t remember how’st the fuck this man and child Rumpel ends up in neverland but apparently mans got the magic beans(???) and he yeets Rumpel back to their world because for some reason if he stayed with him Malcolm couldn’t turn into a kid and gain eternal life or something?? Anyways he is peter pan, jack and the beanstalk, and the pied piper and also his sons wife cheated on him with Captain Hook who just so happened to technically be Peter Pans great grandson’s stepfather which means that Hook is as old as Rumpelstilskin and as old or older than Snow White and Prince Charming who are his girlfriends parents which is pretty gross but apparently not that big of a deal
In Once Upon a Time, Rumpelstiltskin’s father Malcolm abandoned him as a child to transform himself into a child named Peter Pan and he’s evil
Search up the family tree. ABC even has an official image!
You could also look up Billiam's previous Once Upon a Time video, he talks at length about that whole Peter Pan insanity in that one.
The boy who never grew up had a child?
The OG Snow Queen story is my favorite fairytale, and I was so pissed when Frozen came out and not a single part of the original story survived except *female character with ice powers.* So when this show brought out the mirror shards that fly into your eye and make you evil, I got all excited like "Hey that was from the original story!" Only for Billiam to say it's dumb. Now I'm questioning all of my life choices. Thanks, Billiam.
To be fair, he acknowledged he found it dumb without knowing it wasnt an idea of the show but from the orginal fairy tale. And in the context of the show, it does feel prety dumb. It doesn’t seem like they explained the background of the mirror shards or why do they make people evil, so in the show the Snow Queen aparently can turn people evil with her ice powers in some unexplained way. That does sounds prety dumb. Unless there was some explanation in the show im unaware of? Just to be clear, i never watched it so I wouldn't know. Either way, the show's Snow Queen is hardly a better adaptation than Frozen. Dont think the og Snow Queen was anyone's aunt, nor is Elsa's aunt the queen of the snow bees.
Frozen does have some elements of the orginal story, just under the surface. In the first half there's Anna looking for her sister who have turned on her and left, like the fairy tale's main character looking for her childhood friend who left after being turned evil by the mirror shard. Seems like the nearly fraternal bond between the main character and her friend was the inspiration, and reason why is the movie main focus, for the sisterly bond between Anna and Elsa. The ending of the movie has Anna saving herself from dying by the ice shard in her heart due to her sibling love for Elsa, akin to how the main character purges her friend of the mirror's influence by the power of her inocent love for him. So, while still a terrible adaptation, Frozen does take some inspiration from the original tale beyond the ice powers, just in a very bare bones way, the broadest of strokes.
THIS IS THE EXACT SAME REASON WHY I DISLIKE FROZEN
It was going to be more like the original story, until they made Elsa good and then changed everything.
The only things that frozen and the snow queen have in common is 1) an snow queen 2) a evil mirror 3) trolls
in the fairytale, the snow queen was a morally ambiguous antagonist who kidnaps a child for reasons unspecified but allows him the opportunity to free himself. in Frozen, Elsa is a misunderstood antihero.
in the fairytale, the mirror was created by the trolls and held up to heaven to mock god and shattered into pieces and fell to earth where it made anyone in contact with it cold and heartless. In Frozen, hans is the mirror. He uses mimicry to manipulate people into trusting him. Its weird that they made the mirror a literal villain when it was created by the trolls but whatever, he wasn’t a good character anyway.
The trolls in the fairytale were evil incarnate. The trolls in frozen are annoying “love experts” who sing the worst song in the movie. Ugh, I hate them so much.
In the fairytale, the tears Gerda sheds for Kai are what thaws the ice shards lodged in his body and saves him. The point of the story is that you cant save yourself, only by someone else’s love you can be saved, supposed to be a christian metaphor for christ dying for our sins. In the movie, Anna’s curse is lifted by her own doing. Anna saves Elsa from Hans’ sword, thus fufilling an “act of true love” and lifting the curse. Personally, I hated this since I would have preferred Elsa’s tears is what saved Anna, allowing Elsa to redemn herself as the one who cursed Anna in the first place. But no, Elsa does nothing heroic in the movie.
I've made a fanfic trying to reconcile the original story and the movie before 😭😭
just rewatched this show recently and i cannot fathom how i ever thought the plot was genius and well written as a preteen
Hey don't be so hard on yourself, I know someone who still believes it as an adult.
@@manuelmialdea5127 this is too funny 😭 i still love watching it for how stupid it is but seriously, i thought it was GOLD somehow at one point
I mean, to be fair, you did say you were a preteen.
I think it what held it back for me was their need to have a convoluted explanation for everything. Even if they had to retcon one in. I think it had potential to be good. But things just kept getting worse after season 1. This could have just been a mini series that ended after the curse was broken. But nope.
"as a preteen"
I love how Disney actually acknowledged the Snow Queen. Which happened to be what Frozen is based off.
I was familiar with the snow queen story so when I saw what the plot actually ended up becoming I genuinely wondered if they forgot what they were basing it on along the way
Then they got funding from Innovasjon Norge, and chose to rip-off Norwegian stories instead. Yes I'm upset, not only on behalf of the creators of those stories, but each time anything with frozen gets made, be it a movie, juice box, bracelet, or whatever, my tax money goes towards it...
I would rather have not had Elsa and Anna and just have the Snow Queen.
@@TeruteruBozusamawoah, I did not know that!
This season was wild af but I have to admit, Anna saying “as long as I have this w~a~v~y knife” had me cackling.
I think they did a decent job of having her be a bit more rationally observant than some of the fairy tale characters. It was def cheesy, but it worked most of the time for me.
I think the only character in this show I liked was Rumpelstiltskin. And not even because he was well written or a likeable character. Its just that his actor just DEVOURED THE SCENERY EVERY TIME HE WAS ON CAMERA. We're talking Willem Dafoe levels of scenery eating here! He was only supposed to be a minor character for like only a season or two, but he was so popular cause of how much the actor just fuckin hammed it up that they made him a bigger part of the show (hence him being part of like fuckin everyones stories by S4).
It's Rumpelstiltskin and Regina with me.
I remember watching Once upon a Time with my family. We never finished it but i think we got halfway through the frozen arc and never picked it up again lol
Same with my friend and I, she introduced me to the show and we binged up to season four. When the new teaser was shown (featuring Elsa) we just looked at each other in disappointment. I didn't watch it or future seasons so this was a fun video
Yeah i watched the show when i was a child, hooked from the first episode but eventually forgot got bored as the cast got over bloated and the storylines became more and more bizarre: Peter pan is Rumpel’s father? Snow white’s daughter in love with Hook? And then suddenly theyre having a collaboration with disney and suddenly elsa, anna, merida, and mulan are a part of the story. Wow what a shit, overrated show.
I remember the Once Upon A Time craze but for some reason I thought the characters were just from generic fairy tales, not the Disney renditions. But it makes sense with it being an ABC show.
It actually started as a Grimm's fairy tale show, until Frozen fever. Then it's the Magic Kingdom show.
It started out with generic fairy tale characters (with occasional random references to things like Frankenstein), but over time it gradually morphed into a giant Disney fanfic that wasn't even trying to hide it anymore.
I'll never forget that season finale post credit scene of once apon of time. Seeing a blue blob and it turns into elsa. MOM I WANT LIVE ACTION FROZEN. We have live action frozen at home.
With the way live action remakes go, this may not be the one at home if Disney ever does make one.
I can tell you’re joking because children don’t like the remakes
Grateful we never got the Star Wars and/or Marvel seasons of this show while simultaniously mourning the Muppets inclusions we could have all enjoyed. Kermit bringing Olaf back to life so they can be together would have been end game for me
Wait were they actually going to do that
The muppets would have had me rolling on the floor
But the implications that their presence would insite would me insane
Given that the muppets break the 4th wall often and are in universe performers who are also meant to exist in real life and make appearences at events as themselves during things like the game awards
Would they be the actual muppets or human counterparts?
Everybody owes Kingdom Hearts an apology.
I've played KH3 you can't fool me
No.
No they don't. Once upon a time makes sense to the fans, it's just crazy, while you'd have to be crazy to understand Kingdom hearts
Ahahahahahahahahahahah.....
...Oh, wait. You were serious? Let me laugh even harder.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I mean, those games just created sequels too lmao
Big Hero 6, The Lion King, Mulan, Monsters Inc, Hercules, all of their stories were semi-official sequels that tended to ignore their actual sequels.
Lilo and Stitch and Little Mermaid also got prequels while Nightmare Before Christmas had both.
Honestly tho the Ice Queen and Emma storyline was surprisingly good. It was a total fluke of course but ccmpared to the second half of season 4 and onward, this arc had a lot of heart.
But it felt like if another ABC show, No Ordinary Family’s second season (in Mr. Turner’s voice: IF THEY HAD ONE!!!!) started its’ first half with a story arc where the Powells team up with Thor and Captain America just because their movies were big hits that summer. And Disney owns both ABC and Marvel. And they’re played by different actors because ABC never could afford to get either of the Avengers to appear in their Marvel shows😂🤣. What happened to subverting fairy tales?
Yaknow part of me is sad OUaT got canceled. We could have gotten may more fun and ridiculous versions of disney stuff. lilo being a witch and creating stich, 22 from soul being Henry's twin brother, Encanto itself would have so much to offer.
Oh God I'm already imagining the Encanto season and somehow the Grandfather to Mirabel that died is related to like Peter Pan or something and all of the family has ties.
I'm also imagining that Rumple would have a plotline with Bruno.

He is consistently referred to as The Apprentice, ie, the Sorcerer's Apprentice, which would refer to Mickey in the Fantasia sequence, and would justify the mouse gag. The Sorcerer in Once Upon A Time refers to Merlin.
Next season: Buzz, Woody, John Ratzenberger, Sid and Jessie will create new drama as the town deals with an alien invasion and an evil collector hunting old toys. All bets are off with new IP's for new stories.

Supposedly, that's not too far off from the actual book, so its a change to the Disney canon I actually find interesting
Olaf couldn't be in Once Upon a Time, because he got a cameo in Sofia the First in lieu of Elsa & Anna
@NeonPink-lj9qq Lets be honest, mixing them all together wouldnt make the Once Upon a Time universe any less coherent, mainly because it was never all that coherent to begin with.
Olaf was superfluous, and it wasn't worth making a CG model of him.
So what? Disney owns both IPs. There isn’t a cameo limit or anything you know.
16:55 I am 99% sure that Will Scarlet's whole character inclusion and storyarc in that season was SUPPOSED to be for Jefferson/Mad Hatter, but Sebasian Stan became WAY too famous/busy being Winter Soldier in the Marvel movies to do it so they just switched him out for Will instead.
A expert thief from Wonderland grieving a lost love, finds a friendship-turned-something-more with Belle while she's in a toxic relationship with Rumple. If you watch everything Will does in that show, and think "What if that was Jefferson instead" it makes 1000x more sense.
Jefferson had already been established as an expert thief (and possible cold-blooded killer, but that was only hinted at), Jefferson is a widower and single father. Jefferson was the person who FREED Belle at the end of the first season and literally sent her to reunited her with Rumple so Rumple would turn his wrath on Regina in revenge for Regina trapping him in wonderland and separating him from his daughter.
Belle would feel a certain way about Jefferson being the one to free her, and Jefferson could feel some guilt/responsibility for the toxic relationship Belle is in now. There's a lot more LAYERS there.
Omg thank you so much for commenting this it explains SO much. I always had questions about where Jefferson’s arc was supposed to go
Oh man that really does explain a lot. . .now I'm sad all over again lmao I loved Jefferson
I remember how worried ppl were when this season came out. I was in middle school and thought they were jumping the shark at this point. But that family tree gets more convoluted each time.
This storyline was why I was SO CLOSE to quitting this show when it originally aired. OUAT was great when it was just a fairytale mashup. It went too Disney for my taste (said as a proud Disney adult). I officially quit when the Sorcerers Apprentice turned into a mouse 😂

13:26 You know what they say, "everything changed after the Fire Nation attacked" Olaf obviously being a causality of the evil tyrant with the enchanted flames and Anna fighting in the war.
I wonder if Captain Hook's evil habd is a really deep cut reference to the obscure Grimm's fairy tale The Three Army Surgeons where a character accidentally gets the hand of a criminal replanted instead of his own and it similarly compells him todo crimes or if they just wanted to create some cheap drama
Glass that enters your eye and makes you evil is also used in Sailor Moon Sailor Stars 😂
This was MY show in middle school, now looking back at it I wish I lived in the alternate universe where I was into Kingdom Hearts instead
The frozen storyline was actually my favorite partly because Anna, Kristof, and Elsa felt true to their movie counterparts just a little more grown up for the older audience.
Also Elsa & Emma bonding over their similar situations was nice because Emma didn’t really have friends. Also also Elsa being team Captain Swan and kinda teasing them about it was great😂
Honestly the actors had the frozen characters down pat. They did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life.
I love that just describing the show is hilarious.
Yeah Elizabeth Mitchell is fucking awesome. Even in this silly role she brings so much reality to it.
That describes a lot of the characters in this show. Even when the writing is extremely subpar, Robert Carlyle's scenery chewing is a ton of fun to watch.
I admit, the only reason why I even checked out this show is because they decided to incorporate Frozen into it. I was a big fan of the movie at the time, so seeing Elsa and Anna in live action made me want to see this show.
What happened?
this is how I got into the show too
My case was funny, because when I search up about "Once Upon A Time" I actually expect other show with similar premise, then I got into this show. Thinking I was watching the show I looked for.
Billiam on about another season of Once, let's fucking GO!
part of me is frustrated that nobody's gonna be able to do a similar premise with the public domain versions of these characters, but honestly i don't think any mainstream company would be able to pull it off even remotely well anyway

It was so distracting when Frozen of all things was included on OUAT. The only other stories that tipped it over was Aladdin on s6 and the Princess and the Frog villain on s7. It’s a toss up for me to include Hades and the gods on s5. It’s only because of how recent it was released in comparison to other stories on the show

In the original story, the "glass that makes you evil" doesn't technically make you evil, it's more like it gives you a personality disorder lmao
If a shard hits your eyes then you can only perceive things in a negative light, like it puts an ugly filter on everything, and if a shard hits your heart then you can only feel negative emotions.
so getting hit in both places can rly fuck up your personality and mental health, but doesn't necessarily make you evil
once upon a time started kinda silly yet quite solid, but got the flu and built a fever so high that would let anyone have it named after them
I used to think that season was an unofficial Frozen 2. Hell, people were referring to it as such when it aired.
Why do some of the guys on this show look nearly identical to each other? That's so confusing

@@zephyr8072 I don't remember all the names but there were some guys who looked really close to Hook. I'm bad with faces so I have a lot of trouble when actors that are really similar in kind of a general way are all on the same show together
Thank you for being a Regina/Emma truther 😌
Personally, I will never forgive this show for throwing Tiana into the last possible season (when the ratings were practically zero) and casting a light-skinned actress to play her.
Well that's disheartening
The seventh season was awful
Lana Parrilla going from Evil Queen to just a normal human in Lincoln Lawyer is surreal. Oh and just now realized Anna is Beck from You. I swear she looked older back when I was in my late teens.
my crazy old boss was an extra on this crazy show. he stole my tips
It's wild that this show was referred to me by my father of all people, the most salt of the earth, gritty man I know. He's a big fan of Robert Carlyle and he genuinely enjoyed the premise of the show. We watched it together for a little while, but once the show started exploring more and more convoluted plots, shoehorning in new character left and right, and just leaning into the melodrama and campiness my father fell off quick. I, however, am a life long KH fan so this was right up my ally!
Why were all the Frozen notes and letters written in runes? Frozen takes place in the 1840's, not the 840's. Barely anyone used runes after the 1400's, the Christians made sure of that. Such a weird thing to go out of their way to add.
Because Elsa's straight up doing witchcraft?
I love that the summary of just this one season just KEEPS GOING. It's so accurate😂😭
I love how crazy this show got and the fact that Disney is linked to it
THANK YOU. People think I'm crazy talking about this semi-sequel much less this show altogether. Nobody remembers it it seems and it drives me nuts because it could have been an adaption of the Fables comics instead.
A lot of the added details actually do play out in frozen 2 so idk if that was intentional or what lol but that actress playing Anna tho!! She really is imbodying the character pretty well like thats her.
How have I never heard about 'Once Upon A Time' even when watching so much disney history stuff
Yessss, just as I was binging OUAT content
🤜🏻🤛🏻
The Hans Christian Anderson joke had me squealing 😂
I remember watching frozen two when it came out in theaters and I remember thinking, "wait, this is the same plot twist they used in Once Upon a Time??" Still not over it
I feel like there should be a whole video of the problematic plotlines of Once Upon a Time. Zelina would be top of the list with Regina.
It would take longer than the entire show
I would watch that video. I'm just imagining it being like 20 hours long or something
@@angelsartandgaming There’s a one hour UA-cam video on that subject
@@matityaloran9157 oh? By who?

Frozen Fever is basically the tail end of my childhood nostalgia.
Wow I forgot that I watched this entire season until this popped up in my feed
I have waited for this since I watched my first Billiam video about this show. Now I've seen them all and that's still my favorite series you have ever done. This is amazing! Keep em up Bill
I had frog's theme as my alarm sound for years so I got confused mid video thinking an alarm went off even tho that's not my alarm sound anymore
I wasn't ready for Juliette to show up
Please keep going through Once Upon a Time!! I love these videos :)
This is how I got a crush on Elizabeth Lail (Anna). The Elsa actress was also in Fringe, my favorite show ever
This arc had been living rent free in my brain for the past couple of days.
“I love my Helix mattress and I think you would too!” Strange pick up line, but okay!
So happy to see a follow-up to your first OUAT video, Billiam!!! 😍😍😍
Mr. Billiam sir, could you please spare another video on this trash fire show?
I originally dropped out of watching it after season three back in the day but man I am loving the retrospectives on how bad it got. I really hope you keep taking us through it bc there is no way I could ever pick it back up to see for myself
I loved Will Scarlet! That Knave was so charming.
sociopath Elsa shrugging off someone freezing right in front of her💀
When I heard the "enchanted forest" on F2 I was like "excuse me??😳😳"
I didn’t even notice that Olaf wasn’t in the season until Billiam pointed it out…
I think its funny how people insist that disney forced the showrunners to include them when the exact opposite happened. The showrunners loved the movie so much they asked disney if they could crossover with it which is so funny to think about.
My guess is that a Snow Queen arc was always planned and the showrunners just kinda threw the Frozen characters in while they were writing it after the movie came out. Given how long the process takes and how quick the turnaround was, it makes the most sense.
“So many things in this show make you somebody’s slave” 😭😭😭😭
