Suzuki GSX-S1000 GX Review: A superbike for sensible people

  • Suzuki has done it again, and by 'it' we mean delving into its back catalogue and building a sporty tourer around its iconic 1,000cc K5 engine and a very familiar-looking frame.
    And if all that sounds like a new GSX-S1000 GT, it kind of is, although the new Suzuki GSX-S1000 GX is a very different kettle of fish. Where the GT is low-slung and sporty, the GX is long-legged and more like the Yamaha Tracer 9 and BMW S 1000 XR. The GX also has something that no Suzuki has ever had before, semi-active electronic suspension.
    What does this all mean and how does it feel on the road? We fly to Portugal to find out!

    There've been a bunch of UK journos who have dissed this bike's "character". What the actual fuck is wrong with you? It's an inline four. It's smooth, reliable and really, really delivers in everything that matters to people who don't have 25 grand to spend. I live and work in Switzerland. I can afford a GS or an XR or your mom, but I really don't want them (apologies to your mum). I want a bike that isn't going to involve me having an incestuous relationship with my local BMW/Ducati dealer. I just want to get on the thing and ride.

      Yup. Never felt that my zx 14 lacks character.
      Inline 4's are inline 4's. And they are great. The amount of getting stuck on ideas about character is strange to me.

      It's because these born agains on 1200cc bikes either can't ride or are too lazy to rev it out. Trust me you'd be faster than most of them on a versys 650. My only issue with an IL4 is keeping the revs where they should be, ie around 6000 and above, they can for me be annoyingly buzzy. And it's not my style to short shift un less on a boring run.

    I don't see many journalists getting very excited about riding this bike at launch. Looks a nice machine that's probably going to be more reliable than many 'more premium' European options.
    Has 1000cc 150bhp superbike engine become boring now?

    • @alanhedley8622
      @alanhedley8622 7 місяців тому +16

      They are so used with riding 200bhp Ducatis and BMW's costing way more than the Suzuki. Meanwhile back in the UK 150bhp on our pot holed roads is more than adequate.

      @trevorphillips3055 6 місяців тому +3

      You can't use all that power on the road anyway. If you did try, electronics is keeping everything in check. So near or over 200bhp is just for bragging rights.

      I have ridden S1000XR, Multistradas and KTM 1290 R/GT... I'm 40 now and the roads are becoming increasingly crowded up until the moment I believe having a sort of "cadanza" in your riding style is more fun than braking hard before corners, and accelerating out of them right after them while doing wheelies.
      During my meetings I see more and more people downsizing their engines. SD1290GT become 890s. Tracer 9 GT+ becomes XSR750 and BMW S1000XRs even became G310Rs.
      After a 500km day trip those on the low-engined bikes are still fresh... Those on the SD1290RR and S1000RR are just EXHAUSTED.
      So if 150pk is boring... I will gladly be called an old boring man ^^

      I'm very interested in this bike. I love sport-tourers and am very fond of inline-fours because of their smoothness and elasticity. I've devoured all the videos of the bike's launch in Portugal I got hold of and as my biography at least blessed me with having to learn several language I've watched reviews fron German/Austrian/Swiss, Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch and English journalists and although I share the irritation about this picking on the lack of "character" or "personality" which says everything and nothing at all (in my biking life I've tended to keep the bikes which according to journalists had little character and tended to loose interest pretty soon in bikes with a lot of character), I must say that the English journalists at least have the courage to criticize the product although they are invited and treated as VIPs in those press launches. A thing that maybe explains their niggling is that quite some journalists got very frustated by the roads chosen for the launch and the nanny-like attitude of the Suzuki staff, very much concerned with safety. Consensus seems to be that the tires mounted do not do the bike any favour. As fas the compairison with the BMW XR goes, I ran a simulation through their configurator and if you want a well-specked XR with all the goodies for touring and all the electronic helpers, at least in my country, you will end up paying between 4000 and 5000€ more than for the Suzuki

      @vaughanboyce3702 the jornos also don't have to deal with breakdowns, maintenance, or the price of new parts. The more I hear the words "passion" "character" or "personality" in bike reviews, the more those words seem to mean the opposite of "smooth" and "reliable".

    Thanks for the good review. I don't agree about that engine's so called 'Character'! I test drove the XR over a year ago! I can easily afford the XR so price was a very tiny factor for me.. then I test drove a 2022 GT a few months after that! By the time I got to 3rd gear on the GT my mind was made up! I ordered the 2023 model Suzuki GSXS1000GT+ early last year, got it a few months later and have had more fun than anyone should ever have over 15 thousand kms in less than a year.. that's saying something coming from a Tracer 900 which was an excellent bike! The only thing I didn't appreciate was the way the stock Dunlops slid on everything except warm pavement (triggering traction control alot) here in Northern Ontario.. so I put on a set of Avon Spirits which woke the GT's handling and cornering right up!

      Never heard about that before. This engine is one of the best all time, rock solid and super reliable. I don't know what you did to the engine. 😂 In over 26 years of owning Japanese bikes I did not have a single issue. Also owned a K6 Kilogixxer.

      What problems are you having? I also google it and didn’t find anything about people having engine issues.

      @@HifeMan yeah, nothing. I have enjoyed this engine without a single issue while having heaps of fun.

      GT, S and GX have exactly the same engine, by the way...

      @@GCTO239 Yeah plus having the same exact issue on two bikes after the same mileage?
      I have an GSX8S which is a brand new engine from Suzuki and I already have 1600 miles and no issues whatsoever.

    no longer my problem. after two new motorcycles with this problem I was done with it. a year to quickly forget. neatly broken in. but poor quality. google ticking sound Suzuki Gt. you can hear what is wrong 🥹 and believe me was not the only one with this problem.. dealer okay 👍🏻 but I don't have a good word to say about Suzuki importer. they don't listen to good mechanics who work at the dealers. and really want to solve problems. they all have to go to Japan. and then it will be six months before a solution might be found 🥹 Japanese look at it differently 😂 but it will have been solved by now 🈲
