I have all of the bx SSL strips and in the context of a whole mix, they sound good to me. I do like the GUI of the SSL version but at the end of the day, they all are usable and get the job done. I hear the UAD one takes more processing power though. If you are using the bx strips, play around with the TMT settings. Try out the different pairings. There are some tiny differences spatially. It's minor and not a deal breaker but for roughly $25-30 each, the bx strips are a great value and sound great. For $60 (when they offer the 3 bundle), you can have the main SSL strips and be on your way.
Yes . . ! . . . The SSL 4K E is on my wishlist . . . ! . . . After demoing it for a full month, I am thoroughly hooked on it . . . ! . . . Yet it rarely goes on sale, and is very expensive . . . ! . . . This video reminds me that I can still dust off the trusty old BX SSL 4000 E and get well into the ballpark at a fraction of the pride . . . ! . . . And in a Mix, as You mentioned . . . It will get me good results . . ! . . . :-) (-;
Incredible test! Well done.... I own all of these except the SSL. I've been thinking about picking it up but I had heard it's very clean (and I think that shows here). Drums - BX killed it on the drums, followed by Waves. UAD must need more tweaking because it was the weakest on drums by far. Guitars - Preferred SSL on guitars, followed by BX! SSL had such a wide stereo image. UAD and waves sounded similar, slightly more narrow stereo field and had that honky tone in the mids. This leads me to believe that they may actually be the more accurate emulations (never used a real SSL console), but I just liked the sound of the other 2 better. Keys - okay now it is obvious that the BX just has more low end extension than the others and that's where my preference is coming from. But wow, in this one the top end sounds more open as well. Not as much sustain in the compressor as the others though. Waves felt like it would sit in the mix best, UAD was the most forward (thanks to that honky, congested sound in the mids again) SSL was the darkest and widest. I think when using on multiple sources the BX was the safest bet, especially if you couple it with a stereo imager for sources that need to be a bit wider (like the S1 imager or PA's new SPL BIG). SSL 2nd with Waves as a close 3rd. As a UAD Ultimate owner and fan of many of their plugins, I am sad to say that I thought it came in last place on just about every source. With that said, that company is going downhill anyway and has really questionable business practices so it would be nice to abandon them anyway with all these incredible new options!
On the Drums I hear the sustain on the Hi-Mids extend just a bit more. And BX transients hit a bit more. But it may just be me imaging things 😂😂😂 TBH they are so similar that on a full mix you probably wouldn’t even notice 🔊

Thank you very much for your comment! I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked the video!
I can hear subtle differences. But what Jcpunga says you probably won't notice anything different on a full mix.
