that's the four-way poly-rhythm, lol ! I love it too ; imho the essence of afro-beat is that Dakar '72 bass line with a clave feel, implying 3 verses 4, like in cuban swing, then, the half time deep feel (often heard in the unison rhythm-breaks tho' not on this track') emphasises the four against three feel, imagining the beat to be in 12/8.... that's the way I dig it ! peace africa and peace world !

A comment below helped me dig what I've always liked about the afro-beat feel. Humbly, and without knowing precisely the various regional variations (Songo etc) the essence seems to be that Senagal/Mali 1970's type double poly-rhythm similar to la musica cubana (eg Guajiro, or salsa), where the feel is heard as 6/4 in the bass and 12/8 (or 4/4) in the drums. Then, each signals the other, or swaps over, allowing simultaneous 3 v 4 and 4 v 3 feels !! It is the hippest mind-altering effect of two intersecting waves of pulses...., and NOW ! I see where Tony Williams got the idea for his triumphant poly-rhythmic master-work on Miles' version of Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints' . It all makes sense, I thought it was latin but it was afro... Peace world, and thanks again for posting !!

The Chorus is a Yoruba word - Awa o ba elenu meji sere Mo".

and i think you got it reversed....tony has been doing this kind of pattern since the africa 70 days ( see confusion or lady for example) also tony williams hi hat work was not as dynamic on that track
