Reliving my days as a young foreign PhD student in the early 70s at the University of Ibadan (UI). Just before the time of Fela's concert at UI there had been a student protest and the police had stormed the campus. Many students fled. Some challenged the police and threw home made bombs. The big day for the concert arrived. We took our seats early as we'd been told the place would be jam packed and that Fela, typically, did not arrive early. We sat for hours waiting. Then the bandsmen turned up and took their position on the stage. They spent an inordinate amount of time tuning their instruments. Everyone in the hall grew impatient and began to hurl insults at them. Some threw objects. Then hours later, Fela arrived. The minute he started to play, all was forgiven. We got up from our seats and started to dance. It was electric!! Right bang in the middle of the song the music stopped. We wondered what happened. The lights were still on. Then Fela looked around, from right to left and said "Look at you...foolish students. You see police you run. You see Fela you throw stone!". Before anyone could say a thing, he continued to sing and.. well.. .everyone returned to dancing. Such a gifted musician. RIP Fela. Those were the days of the oil boom. Nigeria rocked. We pray for the peace of that fascinating country.

My high school was about 400 metres away from the shrine in the 70s. And even though we were too young at the time to go in....we always had fun hanging around the gate and just soak in the spiritual atmosphere. Thanks +Jaime Tejeda for the testimony. It is important for us, Africans on the continent, to know that you, our sisters and brothers in South America, remain connected.
@@ZuluPoet It sounds like it's their take on the title word/ refrain "Shakara oloje ni"... the "R" can sound to some ppl like an "L" : so it becomes "Shakala oloje ni" ...then if you are singing along but don't know tha language u might stop after the first "o" as it gets hazy after that ... so you get "Shakalao ..."
Ryan Terwilliger My bro Ryan, you the hit nail squarely on the head. African Gods May never forgive the world and Nigerians for not celebrating this immortal. Fella warned Nigerians about Buhari repeatedly (As Animal in human skin) and we didn’t listen. Look at us now.....
I'm south African but I enjoy listening to Fela 's music it's original african 🎺 jazz, Nigeria was blessed with great philosophy, rest in peace great man I will always play your tunes.
This is a lit track... Fela has soo many gems not to mention Tony Allen is the unforgettable drummer of Fela they may not be with us sure but the music is with us thats what makes it special because they both left behind good work... RIP to Tony Allen (the Drummer) and RIP to Fela...
I just spent 2 hours listening to Seun and Femi Kuti and then landed here. I must say I got like a cold shower because the master, Fela, is still light years ahead!!! But Seun comes closest maybe thanks to the old timers in his band.
@Albert Anthony, precisely! I'm aware of that. In fact I saw a video reporting on how Fela's band (in the presence of then 14-year-old Seun) almost decided to dissolve The Egypt 80. Then little boy Seun stood up to these older folks and said: no one day; I'm becoming the band leader (although he wasn't even skilled yet). Then in unison, the band elders took on to teach Seun all his dad's musical ways, from the start. That was certainly "a hell" of a decision!
im only 24 years old i live in botswana.. i just dawnloaded his songs.. he is so amazing,, i thought i knew a lot about afropop,,BUT HELL NO.. THIS LEGEND IS AFROPOP HIM SELF
I'm your neighbour in South Africa Im addicted his level is highly above the average he was a prophet, I also visit Botswana frequently before covid you can meet me masa square to chart about the master. 0764354833
Fela was far ahead of time like many revolutionaries of time we don't know or understand and appreciate their talents until the almighty Allah take them heaven through darkness before we acknowledge their greatness. Rip brother and may God almighty grabt you peace, amen 🙏😭
This is NOT Afropop. This masterpiece genre Fela invented is known as AFROBEAT - the Afropop of today sampled a lot of his gems but that's where the similarities end.
Doctor : Sorry you have to live just 5 minutes Patient : I have to listen Fela..but it takes around 13 minutes God : Ok you can live again until the end of Shakara....👍👍

My late father loved playing Fela Kuti's music when I grew up, I didn't like it then but I love it now, it's timeless and reminds me of him. Even though I don't understand the language in other songs, I thinks it's beautiful refreshing music

2019, I listened fela songs and I said to myself our problems in Nigeria and African as a whole did just start today politics, Wow, it's being a long time. May God bless you fela for letting us know the truth. You are indeed a true legend. RIP.
I'm from south Africa and i just started learning about fela and I'm impressed.
Here on the North Coast of Colombia nicknamed him the Shakalao. Tremendous song that danced on the north coast of our country in the 70s
Thanks +Jaime Tejeda for the testimony. It is important for us, Africans on the continent, to know that you, our sisters and brothers in South America, remain connected.

Que viva Colombia!
What does Shakalao mean?
@@ZuluPoet It sounds like it's their take on the title word/ refrain "Shakara oloje ni"... the "R" can sound to some ppl like an "L" : so it becomes "Shakala oloje ni" ...then if you are singing along but don't know tha language u might stop after the first "o" as it gets hazy after that ... so you get "Shakalao ..."
Our own Prophetic boy Fela long live his music🤛🏿🤛🏿🤛🏿
Great souvenirs from the 70s and 80s. Fella never dies. his spirit is always high. Drop likes if u love Fela the greatest of all times
Saw Fela in Portland Oregon sometime around 1992. At the Pine Street Theater. The best and most awesome show ever. ❤️🙌🙌
I'm Liberian and my Ghanaian uncle used to rock this album back in the day. 70's
My martial arts instructor put me on to Fela when I was like 19. Been listening ever since.
How can a song be so perfect.
Ryan Terwilliger, because it’d dared stray along the least taken roads.
Ancestors chose him to communicate to the world, plain and simple!
Right
Ryan Terwilliger
My bro Ryan, you the hit nail squarely on the head. African Gods May never forgive the world and Nigerians for not celebrating this immortal.
Fella warned Nigerians about Buhari repeatedly (As Animal in human skin) and we didn’t listen. Look at us now.....
O2 we celebrate fela every year in Nigeria... We call the celebration *Felabration*

My doctor asked me if I knew about Fela Kuti when he saw that my name was Shakara. So glad he did! This is everything!
Oh, that's so cute!
I wonder if he was Yoruba, because the AA name 'Shakara' is very different to the Yoruba word and meaning. Beautiful story
Beautiful 😍 name!
I just spent 2 hours listening to Seun and Femi Kuti and then landed here. I must say I got like a cold shower because the master, Fela, is still light years ahead!!! But Seun comes closest maybe thanks to the old timers in his band.
This is because Seun retained FELA'S band "The Egypt 80", which Femi was a member of while their dad was still alive.
Seun was but about 11yrs old when his father Fela died.
@@omo7233He was born in 1983. He was 14 in 1997.

@@mishacknthane1060 Okay ill copy your number... HE is a great musician
This masterpiece genre Fela invented is known as AFROBEAT - the Afropop of today sampled a lot of his gems but that's where the similarities end.
now i see why dad had so many Fela records back then.....a great Legend
The most original artist of the 20th century packed with unbridled creativity and dare..@

A top secret “ the connector of Ghana and Nigeria is this man’s music “
My late father loved playing Fela Kuti's music when I grew up, I didn't like it then but I love it now, it's timeless and reminds me of him. Even though I don't understand the language in other songs, I thinks it's beautiful refreshing music
